I'm glad you chose a complicated song. It exposes all the possible mastering options. Thank you!

This feels like I'm going to need a lot of experimenting time to get good at this! It's overwhelming! But you helped let me know why it's important.

I get that compression is used in 2 ways: accentuate the loud parts by flattening the sharp percussive peaks so you can turn those parts up without increasing overall volume, or de-accentuating the loud parts by flattening them so that the more quiet parts can also be turned louder. However, I can't work out in my brain what actual, if any, difference there really is between those two processes or how to choose the right settings to get what I want. I just know to put a ton of compression on any vocals or electric bass to keep it level in the mix. But this video is bringing it clearer to me.

I understand 'in theory' how you are explaining how attack and release work, however I still have no idea how they are actually changing the sound or how I could use it to get closer to what I'm hearing in my head, I would need to hear A LOT more examples of it on different instruments for it to really sink in - I feel you could do a deep dive just on that alone! Also, are the drum samples not already compressed? Huge thanks and appreciation from a total beginner, this is the best mixing channel on RU-vid!

I've been trying to produce my own music now for the last 15 months or so, and I have yet to release a song because I have never been happy with the overall sound of my mixes...UNTIL NOW, thanks to this 6-Step process. Your videos and help is greatly appreciated on my end, especially because you use Logic! I work on a different genre of music than this, but nonetheless, (like he says) these techniques can be applied to any genre of music; my mix has never sounded better! I will be applying these steps to my productions for the rest of my days! Thank you very much once again for sharing and helping out so many people I'd imagine.

Thanks again, Colin. A new thing for me was that you used the automatic release time quite a lot. It surely makes things a little bit easier. I hope I'm learning, because as we know: "repetitio est mater studiorum."

Wow! I love this video. It is quite an education in Compression. I am planning on stepping up to Logic this next month if the finances are there. My genre's tend to be less heavy and more clean that yours, I tend to use drums, bass, accoustic guitar for rhythm, and harmonica or electric guitar for soloing. My voice tends to be a bit nasal. Would you be able to do a video to cover that sort of setup?

Hi. Your videos are great. Super helpful. Two questions. 1) What is the 'Knee" for? Why haven't you used it? 2) You use several different compression approaches (i.e., mono, stereo, and dual mono). When do you use each of them and why? Thanks!!!

You’re the absolute bomb, I was just watching a video yesterday explaining the differences in each of the logic compressors, and a logic based video on how to apply better compression techniques is always useful🎉 one thing I definitely want, is to find a way to use the compressor without triggering any actual compression, but be able to use the distortion knob inside of it, set to “soft” and just have that on some tracks to add some natural color to everything in the song! Maybe I’ll be too much, maybe I’ll need to turn this into a bus process and bleed it into everything
@TheBandGuide
@TheBandGuide 5 месяцев назад
I'm glad this was helpful! You can definitely use the compressor for that- just raise the threshold all the way up and it shouldn't trigger any compression.
@Bittamin

@@TheBandGuidethank you!! I noticed you said that in this video, and oddly enough even as intuitive as these little things should be I definitely still get myself mixed up, so definitely thank you very much for always sharing these videos!! It’s been awesome seeing you start uploading logic content! 😊

Great video! Well done. I use drum designer a ton - but had always heard 'don't compress' - that they were already compressed?
@TheBandGuide
@TheBandGuide 3 месяца назад
That's a great question! They don't need to be compressed to contain their dynamics like you would need to for a live recording- here we're using compression to shape how they interact within the full mix instead

Gidday mate from NZ again….. big takeaway for me was in bus compression using dual mono and coupling. I see it defaults to L. Does that mean it brings the R levels in line with the L?

When you add the static mix as an audio track, isn't it being affected by the mixbus compressor twice?
@TheBandGuide
@TheBandGuide 3 месяца назад
Great question! Nope - I bounce it out before doing the mix bus processing so it only hits it once.
