I am definitely one of the people who read the wrong info and thought normalization was doing what compression actually does. Changing my workflow asap. You explain things so well!!
Given RU-vid's normalization to all audio in videos now, how would one correctly mix a music track to take advantage of this? RU-vid is squashing my audio hard.
Yes, definitely - I went over to your channel and looked and yes they are bringing it way down from whatever you originally had. I had this problem as well and decided to start limiting to -3 and it seems to slip by un-normalized. Now, thankfully it isn't manipulating your audio since normalization just turns it down, in a sense, but it may make your perceived loudness less than other videos and that is a problem. I'm looking into the specifics about RU-vid's normalization now, but maybe start by mastering to -3db for all your peaks.
I needed to understand the difference between normalization, compression and limiter. A quick google query and I found your video! OK, it was published more than 1 year ago... it is perfect for me. Thanks 👍
Thank you. Didn't know what audio compression was. For me both things were somehow done by normalization. Now I can continue my search for a "real time" audio compressor software for linux and windows, assuming it can be made.
Compression was very confusing for me for a while. This video is great and makes compression make sense. Especially in comparison with normalization. I know there is more to learn about compression, but thanks for making the concept click better in my brain 🙌
The several repetitions really helped drum it in lool. But really makes cristal clear now what they mean and I just applied the theory and its exactly what I was after.
@@OliverJHughes no problem bro. Thanks for responding i hardly ever get them so while im at it ill share one of my musc videos wjth you. Im Kasper by the way. Everyone hits rough patches in there life well for me i been solo now no more labels but im left recording songs and videos from my 50 android phone yes its a struggle lol but i been working hard at this musoc for about 8 years and im just not giving up that easy. Enjoy bro ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z9XGR5LOawA.html
I broadcast a show which is a mix of interviews (spoken word only) and music. I log into our station in 4 X 30mins segments.(producing at home due to pandemic) .Should I compress each segment first, then normalise it before creating the mp3 file for broadcast? Or just compress it? thanks for your great video!
i like a little compression on my kickdrum at live gigs so its a little more even. you can play soft and it will be softer than when you play hard but its all a little more even, which is what you want for rock and hard rock... i practice without it though so i get more even and i practice more volume control. but on stage i like the best experience for the audience
Nice done, well explained. but :) I'm wondering should I compress my harmonica track (insert joke here:) A Gentleman is someone who could play the harmonica, but chooses not to. "It aint me It aint me:)
Thanks for a simple explanation, Oliver. I've just created a new gaming channel, and when I'm editing, like most youtubers I guess, I have some audio that I recorded from a script, and then some live audio from a game. Then back to script etc etc. Often, during an episode, I'll hear the volume dip, then jump up, then drop and so on, throughout the clip. I'm guessing from your explanation, I need highlight all the voice audio tracks, and then normalize the lot? Thanks again. Keep up the good work! Oh crap, I just realised I need to compress....lol. Maybe i shouldn't stay up so late editing.....
It's the same thing matey... as mentioned in the video.. to normalize audio is to change its overall volume by a fixed amount to reach a target level. It is different from compression that changes volume over time in varying amounts. It does not affect dynamics like compression, and ideally does not change the sound in any way other than purely changing its volume.
pithy, curt and crisp elucidation..Being utterly antipathetic to youtubers wafling on meaninglessly and throwing non sequiturs every now and then, really pleased to see someone cutting to the chase from the word go..
Great video - perfectly explained! Out of interest, do you use your Zoom H6 as a mic or do you plug-in additional mics and just use it to record the audio?
Thanks @@OliverJHughes! And what sort of XLR mics would you recommend? Usually I’m recording post-match interviews at sporting events/in stadia with a fair amount of background noise.
This video should have been audio only (joking). Your eyes are so pretty they're distracting. I zoned out looking into them and then had to rewind because I couldn't process what you said. Seriously, your eyes look like sapphires.
