I used the Spectrum Analyzer app on iOS with the Fast Fourier transform analysis. The samples were taken with the phone microphone aimed at the compressor from about four feet away. Note the significant decibel readings as well as the frequency drop off.
This isn't a completed project at this point but the greater parts of it are done. I still will be adding a floor with dampening lining, casters, handles on the lid and sides, and hinges to the lid.
Having built this unit there are a few improvements I would make in a new build. Use 1" MDF, more space on all sides, use a more dense sound absorption behind the egg crate to absorb more of the lower frequencies, possibly similar baffles on intake and exhaust sides.

The fan for exhaust is essential when enclosing a compressor or shop vac. I built a 6' x 6' x 6' "closet" off the back of my shop to house both machines. I also installed two computer fans powered by a small solar panel. One fan brings fresh air in and the other fan exhausts the air. I've seen many boxes like yours but without the fan you installed. Then they wonder why the motor overheats. I like the whole set-up, especially the drain valve. Something I didn't do, but will now that I see yours. Thanks for sharing!

You could try using rubber legs under the box and compressor to minimize the resonance.

Great idea, but it appears that the air flow may be too restricted. Have you had any issues since you've built the box? Any adjustments?

Great design and construction Armand! However the foam used is not the optimal material. It is a common mistake I also made: pyramidal shape foams are good to reduce reverberation INSIDE the room (box in this case) therefore are used in radio and music studios. For the quality of the sound let’s say. Unfortunately this very light foams simply have not enough mass to effectively prevent the sound from getting to the outside. For this purpose there are specially heavy „sandwich“ plates with the spring effect. They are able to provide an almost total sonic isolation. So that would be my suggestion for improvement.
@ArmandHindrichs
@ArmandHindrichs 6 лет назад
Old design - definitely first prototype level design. The type of material I used to sound proof my music room in my house was exquisitely expensive by comparison but I didn't want to budget too much to this. It served the purpose, but that compressor since has broken twice... so I moved to a different unit.
@KeiganApparel

Armand Hindrichs I’m curios did the compressor break twice since because it may have overheated in the box or other reasons? Looking to do this to my 30 gal upright.

I was thinking of doing this same thing but doesn’t make sense to spend twice as much on the box than on the compressor. I decided to try one of the newer husky oil less low dB compressors. Bought a 20 gal stand up for $220 and measured sound level with a friends dB device. Averaged 74 dB and is by far quieter than my older 10 gal. No box needed and I love it so far.
@ArmandHindrichs
@ArmandHindrichs 6 лет назад
I went through 3 of those Husky uprights. Each one failed in the exact same way - the pressure line from compressor to tank blew out. I ended up moving to the Ridgid dual tank. Really though, you should build a compressor box significantly larger than I did. There should be much more room. Also it shouldn't cost you more than $40 to build one of these boxes. $20 for a 4x8, $10 for some insulation, $10 for a fan. Well worth it in any case.

Nice design! I particularly appreciate the quick connects and thought given to draining the compressor. A few thoughts: - switch on the outside - if you want more air circulation, try a quiet bathroom fan; they are designed to overcome more back-pressure than muffin fans. - aftercooler (outside the box? Inside, with an additional fan?) to help separate moisture - temperature gauge?

would be nice to add a timer to let the fan running after compressor cut off because compressor body will be still very hot.

Looks to be a solid design man... I'm going to build one soon and do a video on it... But I worry about the balance between reducing the sound while restricting the incoming air for the pump... If it has to work harder to suck more air in it could shorten the life of the pump... Over heating would also be an issue... Making a small exterior building would be good but not the most practical... I guess it's all about finding the balance... Sorry for the rambling comment... Again your design looks really good... It's like I always say... Let's all learn from each other. Joe
@ArmandHindrichs
@ArmandHindrichs 7 лет назад
I would advise putting a fan on bottom and another on top instead of on sides like I did. Also I'd keep a larger control volume to help the intervals of on and off with the compressor generating heat. The design went pretty well but the compressor bit the dust after 3 years of moderate to heavy use. I need to build a box for the new compressor.
@garrisongarage1505
@garrisongarage1505 7 лет назад
Good idea... I've been planning with some designs ideas tonight... I figure I'm going to give a little on sound in order to have enough air flow and heat reduction... I'm going to cut ports and use furnace air filters on at least two sides... I'm also going to install a small 110 volt 10" fan... Only one fan though because I have a 30 gal compressor and need the over all size of the boxes to be as compact as it can... My mini fridge is going on top... One fan placed right should draw in air and push it out the other side passing over the hot pump... I'm also going to run a stand alone 20 amp circuit for the compressor... It only requires 15 amps but the extra power will be for the fan... All will be controlled with one switch... I'm sure I'll change a few design ideas between now and final production but that's about where I'm at... Your videos and videos like it really help... If you want to check out my channel I have a could basic videos with my compressor break in and drain install... But in a couple weeks I should have the box built... Thanks again for the ideas...

I got my 120V AC fan from AC Infinity (cheapest). They also have thermostat controlled ones but frankly they should be on all the time if you're using the compressor. That heat builds up quickly, especially in Houstons heat. You can get around the sound by doing sound baffles with your fan designs. A strong fan will be able to pull a good amount of air through a few baffles without too detrimental of a loss. Baffles are the key!

The fan is wired to run non-stop unless I unplug the box. It's such a small fan I figured it was better to keep it cooling the the whole time than be intermittent. There are some temp-controlled models by AC Infinity (same brand as my fan) on Amazon as well.

@ArmandHindrichs

If I were to build another it definitely would be significantly larger with 2 fans for sure. These were some cuts of wood I had already around the shop so I made them work. Definitely too cramped though. I'd also put fans on top and have inlets on bottom so we get the hot-air-rising effect working with us.

Sorry to inform you but the fan on that position is doing nothing in terms of evacuate the engine heat and provide a nice ventilation. Better if you place it just on top of the engine, and at the bottom of the box open a ventilation in order to create a nice air flow.. Anyways if you are not using it too much it could work. The noise isolation is very good ;)

It takes a long while for the heat to build up on a set up like this at work, the only time it over heated to my knowledge was when is ran for about a hour and a half non stop. If being used moderately or even the more tame end of heavy plus given time to cool off, I doubt it would be a issue.
