Compressors are powerful weapons that define the tone, texture, and attitude of our productions. Join Gregory Scott, Kush Audio’s analog and plugin designer, as he twists the knobs on a compressor plugin while telling you exactly what to listen for, making it incredibly easy to hear all the nuances that make compressors the most magical pieces of gear in a producer’s arsenal.

@Kellz_777
@Kellz_777 3 года назад
@@Kambiz.Mahdavi no problem! I’ll try to answer that question: there’s a compressor that I use (that’s free) called Rough Rider and it has a visual feed on it so you can see what it’s doing to your signal as you adjust your settings. In theory you could put a second one behind it (or any other compressor) in your chain with a 1:1 ratio so you could just analyze the first signal from there solely. ..But more importantly, with any processing moves you make (EQ, comp., etc.) you’ll want to A-B them with your ears to really see if what you’re doing is helping “before-after-before-after.”

As another commenter said, you are like the very best teachers: not hiding behind jargon, and giving your hard earned wisdom away, as the nicest possible present to anybody interested in music. I love each of your videos both for the presentation and vibe as well as for the musical and technical quality. I know these are very hard times for artists and musicians, and I can only guess you have also been affected. However, I wish you the very best, I think you more than deserve to succeed and prosper despite the current situation. Thank you very much and I hope you continue your incredible work for the foreseable future.

I’m curious to hear your opinion on the drum sound of the Beatles album Abbey Road. It’s definitely a collection of different drum sounds because it’s not consistent throughout the whole album, but just in general where they were at artistically with the drum sound in the mix. There’s one particular song where it sounds like the hat screw came off and he’s just whacking a broken hat… I need to find it really quick… oh it’s Maxwell’s Silver Hammer… Anyways the drums are super prominent on that album and I’m just curious what you think about the drum sound.

That's... incredibly kind of you to say, thank you! And I'm beyond grateful for the support of this amazing little community that's coming together. And on top of that, I find that owning the worst things people say about me is incredibly empowering, because it's all true, just as it's all not-true. There are times when I'm an assclown, and there are times when I'm a sensitive nurturing mentor. I'm everything people say I am, because their reality of me is true for them. And I love myself completely, or at least I'm working on it and getting better at it all the time. Truly, I recommend agreeing with every troll you encounter, IME acknowledging the kernel of truth in every perspective is beyond liberating. But it's not for everyone, and I respect that! 💛

This is compression on a drum MIX, which I think in many ways is quite different from compression on individual drums. There are some similarities, yes. But mostly differences. I wish this was a 2-way conversation because the first thing I would want to ask is “why are we not simply making level, saturation, or eq changes to the individual drum tracks themselves?” Because all this could be accomplished that way also, but with a more natural, less “studio affected” sound. Now, if this was a drum loop within a recording I understand why we would have to approach it this way. I am reminded that the lesson here was simply “how to hear it”, and I guess this choice of material does indeed highlight the attack and release of the compressor pretty well, so I give it credit for that. I guess I just wish a lesson of this type could have been delivered using an instrument track in a manner more consistent with how it would be presented to me in someone’s recording. I would have very much appreciated this type of demonstration to have been done with a non-distorted guitar, a piano, or a strong dynamic lead vocal. But thanks anyway. I don’t want to sound like this isn’t helpful at all, because it most certainly is.
