1176 with attack turned to the right and 20:1 combined with the 20 microseconds attack time does some of the work of a limiter except the knee is softer. 20:1 is quite a low ratio for "limiting" but sometimes you want to tame the peaks pretty hard but still without totally erasing the dynamics by brickwalling them. The distinction between taming, limiting, and compression maybe different, because I don't use this taming the same way as compression. The range of the knee is like a little compressor that starts acting at the bottom of the knee. But some compressors do GR even when audio's below threshold cause the threshold point is used to shape a curve that is mapped across the whole dynamic range. Famous example is DBX's "Over-Easy" compression where threshold is inverted and labeled "Compression", so that the single slider alters the curve while compensating makeup gain making it appear to the user like we're inflating the sound. But that is actually different from Upwards Compression, which is a different process for making the quiet parts louder when they're below threshold. The distinction between "turning up the quiet parts" and "turning down the loud parts" is important, A.K.A. upwards/downwards compression. Limiting is always downwards limiting, though you can do crazy upwards limiting with some spectral plugins, which of course produces noise+distortion because the lowest possible sample value is always brickwall limited upwards.

so which do u thumbs up to the EL8-X Distressor Compressor $1700...or Neve Master Buss $4500.. I know over all the Neve might be better. or is it...Your Thoughts Pls..

The Distressor is an "all around" multiple use compressor. It comes with so many different options and it sounds great. I do not own one, but I have used it on a project where I was invited to work as an assistant engineer years ago. The Neve is , well, it's a Neve! It is meant to be used on the mix bus or for mastering. The inclusion of a limiter and the SFE, which is a mid/side processor is HUGE. Fir my money, I would go with the Neve. If you just want a workhorse capable of doing many different jobs, then the Distressor is the way to go. I do not own the Neve and have never used one. I've only demoed it at NAMM Show. And believe me, there was a long line waiting behind me. Lol G

I have the vintage dbx 266xl and a 166 A any thoughts on those racks?
@gsharpjamz
@gsharpjamz Год назад
Neither, but I would love to get my hands on a 266. It's a classic. I've seen a couple on Reverb used, but I'm skeptical about buying older gear used.

Yaw... be real weary on taking advice from someone who markets themselves as a mixing and mastering engineer but the audio in their intro video saw dramatic jumps in volume from his talking intro to that intro splash screen... luckily I was by my volume knob

Point taken. I'm still learning the video end of things. I'm a musician, not a videographer. Bear with me and I'll get it straightened out. Thanks for watching. G
