I've always thought of myself as an 80 percenter. I like to throw myself passionately into a sport or activity until I reach about an 80 percent proficiency level. To go beyond that requires an obsession that doesn't appeal to me. Once I reach 80 percent level I like to go off and do something totally different - Yvon Chouinard, cool little quote about this stuff

Still the best fitness channel on the internet. I'm running, which is giving my weight trainer fits and I don't care. I'm enjoying it and that means this summer is running races. Plenty of time for the gym when it starts snowing again.

Hey Mark, long time listener, first time caller. I just want to thank you for everything that you do, you have truly been an inspiration for me. I’ve struggled with the yo-yo weight and lack of motivation to improve my health overall. Ran into your channel, and I’m glad that I did, your humor, honesty about what you do and what you’re passionate about has been quite inspirational for me. I’ve started riding my bicycle to work, started a routine of doing at the bare minimum 100 push-ups per day, and hopefully starting jogging. My initial goals is to participate in next year’s New York City 5 borough bike tour (46 miles) and participate on a 5k marathon in the new future once I develop my stamina and endurance a bit. I want to be more accountable for my own health and more, and your journey has been the “what in the heck are you waiting for, a bowl of coco puff?” So I want to wish you best of luck in your journey to be above average, and to thank you for giving me, and many others, the inspiration to go and be above average as well. Thanks brother 👍🏽

I do triathlon - ish. I love the whole fact that swim /bike /run are so different. I do the odd one discipline sort of event, but usually as the day of the event dawns I’m glad all the one dimensional training will be over and I can get back to doing different stuff. I never get to the start line of a triathlon thinking “thank god all that trainings over” - I’m thinking “I haven’t done enough swim or bike or run”. Not that any of my plates are ever spinning very fast at all now - aged 58 and going through chemo and radiotherapy nearly 2 years ago for lymphoma - but I’m actually enjoying it more now than ever!

I enjoy your videos. I was a midpack to sometimes upper pack running enthusiast in my youth. As I’ve aged, now over 70, my “training” changed. I now hike with a full pack so I can continue to backpack, cycle so I can ride on and explore old logging roads and trails in the national forests, cross country ski so I can cross country ski, and do some upper body stuff so I can continue to rock climb and portage a canoe. As the competitive edge fades, the fun factor has changed to focus on noncompetitive sports. Just to pass on a comment from Bill Bowerman, Eugene OR track coach - “ I’d rather see 5000 people run a marathon in over 4 hours then 10 people run it in under 2:10.”

I really like this approach. I also do multiple sports. I am most happy when I am mainly running but also have some swimming and learning the bike (definitely a beginner at bike so slow progress) in the mix. I also find it an insurance policy against injury. One of my fears is only running and then getting an injury and then having nothing else to work on. If I keep swims and cycling in the background while running I can more likely pick them up in the dreaded event of a running injury.

Maintain in one area to improve in another. Simple. What people fail to understand is that training improves general fitness, though not necessarily sport-specific improvements, but can increase rate of improvement in all areas. I lift heavy, swim (hate it,) ruck, and run. As I plateau in an area, I switch focus to an activity that I’ve been maintaining as my main focus. Small improvements at a time, but massive benefits overall.

I think your great pal. I singed up for a duathlon this week. 20k cycle followed by a 10k run for Sunday 5th June. I last ran 5k a year ago and never ran 10k but I do circuit training 5 days a week and spinning once a week, with a few weight sessions chucked in. I don't have time to train with a busy lifestyle for many disciplines but your the first RU-vid who is realistic with expectation. My target next Sunday, just to enjoy the pain.

Powerlifter who plays ice hockey and started training to run trail runs and ultras here. Yeah safe to say all over the place. One maximum strength, one full anaerobic and other aerobic. It’s a compromise. I sacrifice bigger gains in powerlifting when in ice hockey season. Yet to see what trail runs and ultras throw into the mix. I get weird looks at the gym by the staff doing heavy compound lifts in the morning and intervals or or aerobic training in the evening.

BUT- there’s probably not many sports that rowing is not good for. I won at Hyrox (stepping in to a doubles last minute after a morning volunteering) off the back of only rowing training. I love doing different genres Mark. While training some years ago for my 7th Dan blackbelt I went and gained a deadlift world record for age and weight . This year after gaining my 8th Dan I pivoted to ultra running as a new challenge . Add to that training towards the Norwegian SF entrance challenge , you should give that a go. 25 mins of cardio bliss .

the overall fittest I've felt is when I was doing a little bit of all my sports; taekwondo, archery, cycling & running, but to get the black belt or win the tournament or ride 100m or run a sub 1h40 HM, I've had to drop the majority of the others. With work, family and general life, there is only so much time. On the plus side, with a good general level of fitness most of the time, it never takes too long to get back to race pace in any of them.....and Maverick tickets BOOKED!

Mark, I really appreciate your general style of videos: No-nonsense, quality content with good humour. Nice one. This video does something else for me however. I am just like you, in the sense that I can't see the fun of focussing on just one thing in life. So I spread myself thin and will probably never truly master something other than being considerably okay at a lot of stuff. This 'advice', if you can call it that, actually gave me some peace of mind. Currently tying some loose ends to an otherwise successful first year at university, but I have a really hard time with not being able to exercise as much as I want to. :) Edit: Quick question I just thought of: Would you say that socks specially made for running are worthwhile? I have never used them yet, but should I get a pair?

I'm a plate spinner, but I do only spin one plate at a time. Rowed at BIRC and EIRC back in '04/05, have barely erged since. Did Total Warrior a couple of times in 2013 and 2014, and have never done an obstacle race since. Ran London in 2016. Probably run 30 miles since. Rode the Fred Whitton twice, in 2016 and 2018. Well, I suppose cycling is the one thing I keep going at, but I'm certainly not match fit at the moment. Next thing I'll dabble in is Hyrox in Manchester next year... Will I ever do more than one? Who knows!? That plate will probably come crashing down as soon as the event is over! 🤣

Regarding wahoo pedals - I also had some disagreement (20-30%) between my pedal power meters and my kickr (a core, rather than a bike, but still a kickr). Eventually I took my bike to a small steady climb near my home that takes me about 15 minutes to climb. Using the known length and altitude gain of that climb + the weight of me+bike, I was able to verify that the pedal power meters were accurate. I have a sneaking suspicion that the method the kickrs use to estimate power is just less accurate/reliable than pedal-based. Please do share what you find with your new Wahoo pedals. If you're up for it and can spare the time, I highly suggest finding a 15 minute climb that you can use to calibrate your new (and old) pedals.

Hey I got a Concept 2 bike 2 weeks ago too and am now on Zwift at 6am most mornings. Very sweaty, very fun. Busy job, college, small kids later and I'm getting heavy eyelids by 9pm... oh to have time to nap.... Good luck in your CF comp!

I guess you must be a big top gun fan, even on a static bike in his garage going nowhere Mark frequently visits the dangerzone.

Funny I've got the Garmin RS100 pedals and compared to my Wahoo Kickr v5, the pedals seem to have weirdly higher numbers. Other than that I've just had to come to the conclusion that the numbers from those pedals can only be compared with other numbers from the same unit and not directly to the Kickr numbers, just ballpark at best.

Mark, you should have given us a "Spoiler Alert" for the movie! I had no idea there would be fighter jets, a motorcycle, and Tom Cruise in the remake..... It's ruined.....

Just got into your videos and very entertaining and interesting stuff dude! If you haven’t tried already I’d recommend a book called The Oxygen Advantage by Patrick Mckweon. He’s one of the worlds top breathing coaches. It’s all about learning to breath more efficiently at rest and during exercise. A big part of it is learning to breath through your nose during training which you may be aware of as Kipchoge is a nasal breather. I think you’d find it really helpful. It’s made a huge difference on my fitness and my asthma. Also be a great video for you to do in the future. Look up Patrick Mckweon online and there’s tons of stuff. Keep up the great work!

@@MarkLewisfitness game changer!!! You may find nose breathing quite difficult at first even during easy exercise….but it’s gets easier pretty quickly. I went from struggling to do warm up exercises through the nose…to breaking pbs through nose in a few months.

You bring up a common flaw in modern thinking regarding “sport.” Are you an Olympian? Are you an elite athlete? People confuse specificity with superiority, and that shouldn’t be the goal for recreational athletes… general fitness should be the objective. Could you currently pass a military performance assessment? Not for special forces, but for a general infantry soldier of a similar age and build? That should be the goal for most of us. Kudos to you for bringing attention to general fitness.

@@MilanSmore I’m talking about influencer attitudes towards “fitness.” You might want to understand the context of a statement before commenting on it. There’s a lot of voices that scream at people to go nuts in specific pursuits that offer little benefit to everyday living. When will a 600lb deadlift come in handy for an accountant? How about general fitness? Oh… yeah: that’s beneficial to pretty much everyone. I’m not talking about free will, nor am I telling people what to do. If you want a 600lb deadlift, go nuts. It’s awesome being powerful, but it isn’t something that comes in handy unless you have children that are always having busses parked on them… and even then, you might want to NOT suck at being a parent rather than doing the work to get a 600lb deadlift. How many powerlifters can run a 30min 5k? Would that come in handy? Yes, not just for the ability of running competently, but also shortening recovery times between heavy sets. General fitness. It’s a legitimate thing. I am celebrating a reasonable voice in the social fitness community that promotes the concept of general fitness. That’s it. Turn down the hyper sensitivity, Slider: it stinks.
