So as I'm again doing a couple of workshops/clinics, I wanted to figure out my playing solution for an easy to travel solution. Best in this case would to bring my computer and my audio interface and play through that. In this video I'm showing the setup and rig.

I have considered using this for a club rig. My current rig is already pretty small (1x12 combo amp and a pedalboard basically). But only having to carry in a backpack and a guitar would be seriously cool. Not sure about the automation part as that would require having the drummer play to a click. But the idea is solid. It would also address amp volume onstage fairly well. Might require in-ears to be totally efficient.

Are you asking about how plugins and stuff work? I literally like last week got to finally fiddle with plugins. Basically you completely take the amp out of the equation as you don't need it at all period. You plug your guitar into your digital interface box and run a USB cord to your computer. You then download an amp simulation software such as amplitube 5 the one I experimented with. You go through and make your tone presets you want to use for later. Now minimize that window for now as you don't need it up on the screen just running in the background. Fire up your software and configure your audio paths. I'm going to use audacity as an example as it's free to download. Go to the top and click edit, preferences. A new window pops up, plugins manager select your plugin program amplitube 5. A window pops up next to the track that says edit plugin this is when you know your connected. Hope this helps if not feel free to ask.

As a solo artist with no band this is exactly how I perform my live production. This also allows me to program a light show through dmx. Like you Ola I love and prefer a amp ect but depending on the type of performance we now have amazing tools to achieve this.

@havocharmony9661
@havocharmony9661 2 года назад
@@IVsakeN Not in my setup. All my live instruments are run through stand alone gear straight to the mix that goes to house. So none of my live performance has to take a lap through the DAW before hitting the mix which means zero latency. The CC messages coming from DAW to the standalone gear for patch switching is instant. Now if I were using plugins for my live sounds there could be slight latency.

@@IVsakeN None at all. All my live gear outs are to direct lines, not run through DAW. The DAW only plays back 2 tracks on 2 separate buses, One goes to house/audience, the other includes click and vocal ques and goes direct to my in ear monitoring. So the actual processing load on the DAW is very low. 2 audio tracks with no processing, and a cpl hundred automation lanes for light program.

I got a macbook air M1 a couple of months ago, and while I'm loving the portability of it, I've noticed it tends to overheat and start to lag when placed under high demand. I use an SSL 2 with Neural DSP and for someone like me, who mainly plays in a bedroom in his little apartment and doesnt want to be lynched by the neighboors just cause he wanted a big ol wall of sound, this is perfect. Its relatively cheap aswell, got the SSL for ~200€ and Neural DSP for 60 on black friday. For this price, I could barely get a half decent little beginner amp. Yeah I dream of having my own Mesa one day, but this day, if ever, will be far in the future. I mean you can connect them to the PC with like a Torpedo or something, but idk if thats really the joy of such a thing... Until then, I'll just visit my local guitar store now and then to play the big bois ^^

I do it for about 7 minutes then stop (just long enough to get them to call the cops), when I really want to irritate the neighbors because they're being particularly douchey...my answer when the police show up for noise complaint is "I'm not doing it now and less than 15 minutes of intermittent noise violation is allowed as long as it is not continuous measured sound pressure, so can you please show me your currently valid calibration sticker on your sound meter?" They struggle for something to say and then just leave. Because I have a calibrated sound meter, with a valid cal tag. Even if they had one (they NEVER bring it the first time out), I'd have checked for a calibration sticker and they RARELY have it on their unit, much less current so I can immediately invalidate their argument when they thought they were being REALLY SMART. Also know that I have not one but two of the Sunn 1200S amps that can put 1200W into a 2 ohm monoblock, and they're the rebadged Fender ones that have the improved thermal solution so if I felt like it I could run them long and hard as well as loud af. The only amp rumored to have slagged more voice coils is the Peavey Firebird 700, and trust that I've been looking ha ha ha

@@rachitbhengra4298 Well tbh I'm no expert in this field but for me at least, it does what its supposed to do. Thinking back to his review, I think his main critical points where things, that his more expansive gear did better, mostly due to a higher quality. I havent had any problems with it so far, using it to feed my guitar into Neural DSP or Ableton with Neural DSP... There might be better options out there, idk, but for me it does the thing. You have to remember however, that this is a very simple piece of gear, mostly due to the price tag. It has two inputs and some little controls, thats it. On the other handside, you can easily pay ten times the price for an interface... I would recommend it, coming from my point of view, but dont take my word that serious. I'm not really experienced in this field. For me, it does the job, and therefore, I like it. If you decide to give it a try, and you like it too, thats great. Maybe, if theres an option for you and you have some things you'd like to have in an interface, get a few in this price range to test and keep your favorite. I heard good things about Focusrite stuff aswell... I'm sorry I couldnt really help, but whatever you decide in the end, I hope you'll find the right thing for you! ^^

@@OlaEnglund in my experience, if you leave logic up on the computer, shut it down awhile, and have anything else running, core audio likes to do some fuckery. I’ve been DI into logic for years now, and the best solution seems to be to me, save that file, close all other apps, and open it fresh each time. Otherwise it gets somewhat confused when the audio interface shows up and disappears, and the resulting latency is a bit ridiculous. I’ve had this happen on two different MacBooks, so it’s not the most isolated incident. If you boot logic fresh each time for each clinic, it should perform pretty damn flawlessly. I had no idea you could program FX on and off with automation in the way you’ve done it, and now I’m off to learn more about that! Thanks ola! Something like the m1 would be even more idael for a computer live rig than anything before. Very few people use Pro Tools live, even to use Logic was always a bit weird. Ableton Live is the go to for using a laptop live and it’s absolutely fine, I think Logic has added similar features. Generally it’s better to use a Mac, no idea what Windows is like these days though, but essentially it was the reliability for live use that led me to converting to Mac about 15 years ago. Within Electronic Music, people performing with laptops are using them for a lot more than amp sims and effects. Players like Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead were running guitars through laptops 20 years ago and performed around the world. In the years I’ve personally used a laptop for performing, I’ve only had it go down on me once during a show. Just don’t use Pro Tools. Personally, I still prefer an amp and pedalboard where possible. A decent laptop, interface and legally acquired software still works out more than a high end amp and the former is much easier to steal and more desirable to thieves and if you’re not backing up and use that laptop for recording as well as performing, you could lose everything in a bad scenario. If a pedal or amp breaks, get lost/stolen etc, far less of an inconvenience, on the flip side, more effort to lug about, sometimes wouldn’t mind if someone wanted to take the amp! 😂

Make sure you aren’t running a ton of tracks with active effects. If you have multiple tracks, right click one of them, to you track header components -> show freeze. Freeze all tracks except your guitar rig track and minimize the number of effects on the guitar track. Also, run the audio to your headphones or monitors out of the audio interface, not the onboard audio from the laptop. That gives a shit ton of latency

It seems that you're not using UAD plugins live from the Arrow/UAD Console ... if it's really the case, you should switch to an RME interface, drivers are much better, rock solid and you'll have a better latency. Imho the point of UAD gear is in using their live low latency plugins (the 55 deluxe is a wonder ! ... and lots of them are top notch) ... but if you're using mainly plugins in Logic ( and not in UAD Console) ... you should switch to RME. Wouldn't it be a better idea to change the patch at points instead of having more instances? This could help save the resources probably!

I just started going digital and I was on hiatus for a while from guitar playing but now I'm back and I bought a modeler effects processor and a computer 6 and 1/2-in monitors. I hope that's enough. Do you think I can get considerably good sound out of that?

I was robbed bi my own Dad. in 2019 my uncle died and my aunt gave me two nice amps... i was excited to get back into guitar.. I bought an Ibanez gio in June just to find out my Dad gave both amps to his band members... they are a schitty folk band and they can't even play their instruments properly.. I am BEYOND pissed at my Dad.

Tech question for you: How's your Macbook Air spec'd out? I need to replace my 2015 Pro and am trying to figure out the best value Mac laptop available. 16GB of RAM enough with the M1, in your experience?

As a beginner (6/months) with a MacBook Air M2, THR10II and a Fender Player Plus Stratocaster… this is way too complicated. I mean I understand stand he has everything setup so instead of using pedals once it gets to a point in the song the software essentially acts like a stompbox pedalboard changing his tone to whatever sound profile he set it to. I think that’s something to definitely grow into but I’m thinking I need to learn GarageBand first and then upgrade. I also got a free version of Cubase with my Yamaha THR that I think I’ll use before this. Just a little advanced for someone like me. I wish I could understand this

Uhhh... why not just use a standalone VST host, or a plugin with a standalone mode? Gig Performer is available for Mac and Windows, and Mainstage is part of the Apple ecosystem, using the same audio engine as Logic. Open source alternatives include PedalBoard2, Cantibile, and Carla, with those last two even having Linux and/or BSD support. I've used PedalBoard2 and Carla on Windows and Mac (and used Carla on Debian/Ubuntu and Arch based Linux distros) to pretty consistent success. AFAIK all of these allow for saving presets/projects.

Almost all similar videos leave out one important thing. What do YOU personally use for speaker monitors? In studio, or when you travel with the Laptop/ Guitar rig? You are not wearing headphones during your presentation. And you can hear what you are doing. Most similar RU-vid tutorials also state: "This is ALL you need", without explaining what their Brand choice of monitors they use. As if they aren't part of the equation. Just as a certain, trusted, speaker cabinet/ amp, or combo amp is needed, for bigger venues, please let us know what stereo monitors you are using in studio, and in small non PA venues. Some of us are making decisions about purchasing items you stand behind! Aloha Ola, from Maui!

Like this week, I stuffed a backpack with a laptop and an audio interface, put on my guitar, went outside and played a metal version of "Megaton Punch" from Kirby's Super Star for my cat. We live in an awesome era.

I assumed these interfaces have some kind of separate power adapter. It seems kind of risky to have one little USB cable powering both the interface and the guitar. However I'm just a noob and I don't actually know just how much power this setup would draw from the PC.

If you are gonna use that approach in rehearsal and live with a band and programming automatic changes in the sound, your drummer will have to play to a clicktrack generated by the program you are using right? If the drummer plays faster live than he would normally do the changes will kick in too late

I would like to try this setup on stage. Can you also use it if the drummer plays along with clicktracks? Any ideas how you can make the clicktrack and the automation of your DAW start at the same time? Is there any way to trigger the track on the laptop by the drummer playing his clicktrack or would I have to put the clicktracks in the same project and hit space key every time? 😁

Hi, have you done a similar video (no amps) while using Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 while recording? I have a Fender lt25 with Fender Tone to use for amps on PC. I can record with Audacity but the tones aren't saved. I can't seem to use the acoustic sounding files I save as mp3, wav, or ogg to add FX to. I am totally new at using this as a PC, but it's a lot better than an ISO Cab for me. Any info on this would be great. I'm standing here with all/most parts needed and can't do much aaaaghhh

Slightly off-topic question for the commenters. I've spent my entire guitar life playing through amp sims. I really want to get a conventional amp setup (probably 6505/2x12 Mesa cab) with a Torpedo Captor. How much volume does the load box suck out of the signal? I know the specs say -20dB but that doesn't really translate into real-world meaning for me. Can you actually get away with a setup like that in an apartment, for example?
