I love it, no quantize. Just record it straight in and let it breathe. Your workflow allows you to be a musician.

It definitely allows me to put my soul into the music. Not be too robotic. Sometimes the flava you put on the music makes the whole difference

Good Stuff Grime. You’ve definitely taken me back to my favorite ways to create. I had gotten away from it for years. But was inspired to revisit the VS videos. Which led me to your channel. Indeed, it’s ultra important to develop a workflow that works for your studio. Which has been my issues for the past few years. My once cohesive workflow was destroyed from a basement flood initially. Since then, it’s been due to GAS issues. I feel I’ve got more than enough gear to do another pseudo lab reconstruction. In which I’m gonna refocus on my VS2400. I did secure an SI-24 today, which was long sought after for my setup for years. Anyways fam, I feel as if we’ve talked shop in the past. If not, I’m sure we will going forward. Keep creating and ignoring the haters. Peace…Netm8kr 👍🏾✌🏾✊🏾

Thanks for checking out the video. When they came out I wanted this and the yamaha aw4416 bad. They were out of reach price wise. It's amazing what you can get these for now. I got a si24 coming in the mail. Got a roland dif adat to give me 8 channels of audio through r-bus. Got a BEHRINGER ADA8200. I also may be trading a keyboard for another vs-2480. I got things in the works. As far as haters. I do this for me. It's all good

Man I used to want a 2480 so bad. Every time I'd go into Guitar Center I'd mess with it. The demo song was recorded by Blackstreet. It really showed the capabilities of the machine sonically and effects wise. Nice setup also, by the way. I once worked with a talented writer who used a 2480 to record demos for Chris Brown. We had to rent one just to track the files out that he sent us. This was in a million dollar studio.

Great Video, I just went back with a simple set up, Fostex Mr16, Behringer 10 ch. mixer and Triton Le. I use the effects on the Fostex. Its only 16 bit, but that's good enough for soundtracks for my videos. Keep it up. Cheers .

Man great video tour of your setup. I agree with others it's all about what workflow works for you and just feels right. I remember back in the day choosing between a Roland VS880Ex or a Korg Trinity for my band. Made the right choice, made a lot of great tracks on it and recorded other local musicians in Minneapolis with it. Then later in life picked up a maxed out VS2480 with all the EFX cards. Now I'm comparing it to my Ableton Live setup. I still appreciate the immediate feel and the jam session like ambience of using it. Also I think a portion of the music world will eventually shift to off the grid, unquantized and and wider dynamic range. To chase more organic and alive sound in the digital realm. And as a sort of rebellion against the loudness wars and the over utilized DAW and sequencer quantization. Anyways just my two cents. What do you think of the sound of the VS2480 converters? I've never been able to put into words the character of them...
@biggrime

I really like the sound. I've compares to midas venue mixers and honestly vs2480 stood up very well. EQs too. Vs2480 surprising warm sounding

Great setup! Regarding gear, the VS-2480 is as cool as it gets and the specs are even nowadays impressive. I still have my VS-880EX. It has a lower spec, but I always liked the sound of the converters. The only other gear that has a similar coolness factor as the VS-2480 is maybe a Korg Oasys. Remember the ad with Herbie Hancock, his Ferrari and an upside down Oasys next to him?
@biggrime
@biggrime Год назад
Thanks... The Oasys omg. I wish korg come out with a updated version of that. I have the Kronos and I love it but the oasys hardware is top notch. Might not be very profitable for roland to update the vs-2480 But I think they will be surprised on how many people buy

@@biggrime I agree, the Roland VS units are still being used... lots of people trying to upgrade the internal discs to SD card or SSD. Have you ever considered doing that? And the lower tier Zoom MTRs don't fill that void. I mean, with my old VS-880EX I can achieve a semi-pro recording quality, with my Zoom R8 much less. Still a nice machine, though (the R8). Currently, I am looking into a Sound Devices MixPre wit Musician Plugin. The DAW features are limited, but the audio quality should be good.

Using the multiple preams in your VS would make your workflow not only more efficient but it would sound still great right? If the last signal is the preamp in the VS2480 and there's a mixer in-between, The mixer having higher quality is being squashed by the other preamp, unless it's turned off and only recording and converting somehow. How come you use that one input for every single track instead of using multiple inputs by type of sound (vocal, drums, guitars, ect.) ? Is it because you feel like you have alot of gear that needs to be on at all times? Or does the sound sound better when it's like that? Super interesting setup and really smooth beat u got there! It's great to hear this thing working

If you want, you can make the VS routing part quicker/easier. Long press the button on the track, i believe, and then press the source button(s) you want to send to it. Something like that.

Hello. I think what you just did was important. Perhaps you didn't realise just how important. These VS machines sound amazing. They are a little more hands in complicated to with at first but I've got the 2480cd and it hands down sound better than my Ableton Live system, there no comparison. The Roland Vs sounds better to my ears. I was wondering if you had time to do a series of tutorials on the Roland VS system using the 2480? There's a lot of folks out here with these machines. They all use similar op systems too. Perhaps the basics: recording process, how to insert an FX, etc .. using the auto faders ...U think a writer such as yourself with your great music would make using these machines more approachable. Anyhow, thanks for this upload...🙏

Do you use that 3rd effects processor all the time? I’m thinking about getting the 2400CD but it only has 2 processors by default.
@biggrime
@biggrime Год назад
Personally, it depends on what I'm working on. Most of my keyboards have built-in effects. So it is possible that I won't need a 3rd effect. You could use the effect on the input and record the effect into the track. That might make some people nervous because you won't be able to remove effect once you record it. Only 2 processors? Do you mean two effects or 2 cards 4 effects?
@chuckoliver9107
@chuckoliver9107 Год назад
I went back to true recording also, I just couldn't find any Cpu programs (to me) that gave me the flexibility that I have with my Roland setup. But I will say that your routing steps make no sense at all, you have 11 other input tracks open for use, and if you go direct in there will be no routing steps.
@biggrime
@biggrime Год назад
My setup makes no sense because you do not have a full understanding of what's going on here. A lot has changed since this video but, at the time I was still new with the vs2480. So going into input 1 & 2 for my synths was easy. Plus at the time i really liked the midas eqs. Later on did a comparison between vs2480 stock eq vs midas. Vs2480 stood up pretty well. So I sold the midas and bought a roland at-dif with rbus to connect my adat interface with vs-2480. Thanks for your input

@biggrime
@biggrime 2 года назад
I don't know if would say easier. The work flow i used to use is the following. I sequence everything into the mpclive. I record live audio into the mpc. Mainly the only midi used is the plugins/programs inside mpc. Occasionally I midi record one of my hardware synths depending on what I'm trying to do but that's rare. After that arrange track in song mode. Stem each track and upload to sonar/bandlab. Then mix on a mackie onyx 4880 analog mixer. Now I record, arrange, and mix directly in vs-2480.
