In relation to your van and just using water without anti-freeze, modern coolants act as lubricants for the water pump, and probably more importantly, have anti corrosion agents to stop the cooling system getting rusty, thereby reducing the risk of sludge build-up which could lead to water pump failure and/or blockage of the entire engine coolant system. If it was my van I certainly would not run it with water only in the coolant system.

I know nothing about that. The garage put in whatever they put in. I just leave it to their expertise. It's an old 1999 Nissan Vanette 2.3d, I bought it in 2018 and it's still running. OK I have had a few wear and tear related problems in the five years I've had it (replaced clutch, a couple of tyres, battery, fan belt, water pipes, brake pads etc and the cables that connect the gear stick to the gear box) but nothing major in all that time. There are loads of these old vans on the road here, they just seem to keep running and running, Mine has over 284K km on it and still going strong. One thing that does not happen to vehicles here is bodywork, sills, brake pipes etc rust/corrosion. They just don't seem to do that.

It’s better to use antifreeze/coolant, as it has anti corrosion & lubricant properties .. plain water also has mineral content as well.
@arthurmann578
@arthurmann578 Год назад
I was thinking the same. Also antifreeze protects from BOILING over as well, which would mean even with the leaky unsealed radiator cap, you would loose much less fluid at a time as it would not boil out. My friend once forgot to put on his radiator cap after checking his coolant level and even after we drove many miles there was no indication of of any overheating. What we DID smell eventually was some antifreeze coming from the engine block which is how we found out he left the cap off. Luckily the cap was still on the ridge of the engine compartment and didn't get lost. We even did not have to put back too much coolant either, hardly any in fact. If this had been water alone it would have boiled all over very quickly! Luckily it wasn't TOO hot of a day either as the cap does help build up the necessary pressure to lower the boiling point.
@00Skyfox
@00Skyfox Год назад
That's amazing about the van. Here in the US any repair shop would charge 300% markup on the cost of the radiator cap, plus add an hour (or probably 2) of labor at $90+ per hour. For replacing the exhaust on my '94 van the local muffler shop gave an estimate well over $600. I did it myself in under an hour for $150 of parts, crawling around under the thing with the van up on ramps.

Richard, you should put antifreeze in your car because it also has anti-corrosion chemicals in it. It will also raise the boiling point so it doesn't turn to steam in the engine. Please don't reply unless you are certified in some sort of cooling systems... like boats or cars or plains.... you know, educated in the field I am referring to.

With these I would check for bios update. Dell is very good about updates, such as; bugs in firmware, being able to accept faster processors or more ram. My Dell Vostro 3350, according to Dell will accept up to 8GB of ram, but the Intel chip-set will accept 16GB. And yes, the bios sees the two 8GB sticks of ddr3.

I've done this exercise quite a few times. The big problem is that the buyers see "minimum specifications" for windows/office etc and that's what they buy, despite the warnings from IT departments/advisors. By the time the problems arise these buyers are long gone and their replacements fall into the same trap. A few years down the road and Microsoft have added new "features" which need a lot more memory and consequently the system starts swapping to disk which of course, being mechanical drives, are quite slow. I always carry a copy of Hiren's Boot Disk on USB stick for exactly this purpose.

I worked in Portugal on the Algarve for a few years and the plain water as coolant because it doesn't freeze here was there understanding. So many destroyed engines because of lack of corrision inhibitors.May have been OK with cast Iron Blocks and heads but not Aluminium. Off scope with regard to electronics though !

Recently repaired a couple of power supplies out of these units. Leaking caps in one and main filtering cap in another. One particular model of PS are notorious for failing. Just a FYI regarding Macrium Reflect Free.The free version is being discontinued and starting in 2024 will no longer receive updates. If you purchase it in 2024 it is a yearly license with updates and upgrades to the next versio. If you purchase Macrium Reflect in 2023 its a perpetual license and you will not have to pay each year. I believe it will get updates only to that version of Macrium. The free version as far as I know will continue to work but no updates or fixes will be released for it

As others have said, DEFINITELY put some kinda coolant into your car, though, as apart from corrosion inhibitors it raises the boiling point and allows the car to more effectively cool itself. You can even just add it after, if need be. and it will eventually mix OK. But maybe your local garage already added it and we are fretting for no reason?

I think he is referring to what we called growing up in HotBama a summer blend. Some people would change anti-freeze before summer/winter to the appropriate blend as well as oil. Non-over achievers like me simply used the all weather blend :)

@@englishrupe01 it doen't smell like antifreeze to me. Well at least not like the sort we had in the UK. A cold spell here is defined as any day that does not reach at least 20C. That only happens a few times a year. You could count those days on the fingers of one hand. Winter nights can and do get as low as 14C.
@englishrupe01
@englishrupe01 Год назад
@@LearnElectronicsRepair Right, i understand it's not that cold there, Richard, ( i have been to Fuertaventura and Tenerife many times and loved it) but it's about efficient cooling and the corrosion inhibitors that the additive contains. Straight water will boil in your engine when "coolant" (or whatever they use there) will not. It's worth a phone call to check, mate, as straight water WILL also corrode internal parts. The only engine that uses straight water is a steam engine.

Antifreeze protects the metal from thermal cycling damage also not just to prevent the coolant from freezing. Water streams at 212F and most vehicles run that hot. Running just water damages head gaskets, radiator, freeze plugs and will rust up all the engine block cooling chambers if cast iron or corrode the aluminum parts pitting the hell out of it. Unless your engine is billet aluminum of course

You could try to put the non booting HD in the freezer (in a plastic back to avoid condensation) and then quickly copy the data, once it's cooled down (possibly keeping it cool with ice). Worked for me twice already.

In my experience with fresh Windows, installations, mostly XP up to 8.1, a computer will be very fast and responsive for three to four weeks when used for several hour s a day. By 12 months, it will be a dreadful computer, getting progressively worse still as more time passes. I would think the upgrades with a clone of the old installation are very much a compromise since the main problem of a degraded OS hasn't been addressed. What I'm using to view this video is exactly three years old, uses a Samsung 860 EVO 1TB and 8 GB RAM. The slowness and the bugginess are dreadful. I don't trust it to work with any important file.
@ralphj4012

Concur. Even with newer versions (10, 11) classic Windows issues persist, especially tons of temp files everywhere and fragmented drives. A clean install (in most cases) can surprise in just how fast the PC was. Needless to say, new thermal paste, clean fans, heatsinks and vents and check RAM slots for cleanliness and secure fit.
@jozsefizsak
@jozsefizsak Год назад
@@ralphj4012 Good points. I only learned recently from an engineer that contacts need cleaning just because current flowed through them for some years. Now I clean slots before assuming that RAM or cards are faulty.

Trouble is with these older machines is people will upgrade the OS but then nothing else. I run windows 10 with 16gb of ram, ideally it could use another 16gb because windows takes up the vast majority of what's installed already, if the machine doesn't have enough ram it'll start using virtual memory and that will make it run like a pig, especially so if it running an old platter ide hdd.

Yeah this is one of the things I love about living here, we have a few big supermarkets, but they don't also sell petrol for example. Same with large hardware stores, we have them but there are hundreds of small independent shops, ironmongers, clothes shops, home goods and just about everything else you can think of, and they all do a good trade. One thing I also find interesting is that the cost of diesel for example is currently about €1.22 a litre in our town (£1.05) It's a few cents cheaper on the motorway or at the airport, but if you go to Arinaga, which is about 15 mins drive from here, you are gonna pay around €1.05 (£0.90) a litre. This is, as far as I know, because Arinaga is where the fuel tankers come in ( we have no refineries on the island) so there are a lot of petrol stations (brands you never see anywhere else on the island) near to the port and of course the cost is going to be cheaper as there is no further road transport involved. Does this mean there are queues of people at the Arinaga petrol stations? Nope, they are quiet. Seems people here can't be bothered to drive there just to save 15 cents on a litre of fuel. Do I go to Arinaga to fill up? No, unless I have to go there for some other reason and happen to need fuel. This would not happen in the UK, as I know from living there most of my life, you woudn't be able to get near to Arinaga if it was there, everyone would go crazy to get fuel, my fellow countrymen would line up like sheep from a mile away and wait an hour or more just to save a bit of money. Go figure eh?

Just run ad-aware or a more modern equivalent. Most slow-down is from people letting programs install whatever crap they want to, which often includes "toolbars" and similar advertising junkware. Then you turn off all of the "fast load" programs you possibly can and you're generally done. (ProTip: There are practically no programs available today which require a "fast loader" or "quick loader" or whatever other stupid buzzword the software writers came up with)
