In December of 1909, a few days before Christmas, the murder of a wealthy old woman in Glasgow sparked a cascade of events that would go on to write an incredible story of prejudice, conspiracy and eventual justice. Featuring a starring role by none other than the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, it was then and remains still, one of the most fascinating, perplexing and straight confusing incidents of cause celebre in modern history.

I lived in the top flat above the Gilchrist flat for 4 years or so in the 00's. There was 3 of us staying there over the years and all manner of strange goings on while we stayed there; mostly thumping and knocking sounds but other strange noises and incidents, doors opening and closing, TV's turning on while we were out. Even visitors and partners would notice. I was discussing this in work, telling my colleagues we were haunted and having a bit of a laugh about it. Then the next day a fellow brought in a book that his wife had given him after they had talked about the day at work. His wife was an avid true crime reader and the book was called Square Mile of Murder. It contained details of 4 murders in a square mile around West Princes Street and one of them was this case. There was also a TV serial in the UK in 80's based on the book but I haven't seen it. I love your channel and your stories, never thought I would hear one this close to home. And my name is Ben. Thanks

OSCAR SLATER by THOMAS TOUGHILL goes into detail about Miss Ghilcrists nephew who wanted some legal papers she owned, its been quite a few years since I read the book but I remember it being one I couldn't put down easily, a great read one to buy if you're interested in this case.

There was a similar case in London...omg! What was his name ? Weiss? I'll look it up. But this case is unbelieveable. There's something not quite right with the people around the victim. I wonder if this was an inside job.

I would surmise that the murder and burglary were intended to secure the transfer of the victim's estate to it's new beneficiaries. Perhaps papers were stolen that would call the validity of this into question.

I thought the chair covered in blood was the murder weapon? 🤔

The maid left the door unlocked, planning to return after the murder. Timing was off, she returned as the murderer was leaving. Told cops she couldn't identify him, but changed her story only after a convenient fall guy was arrested. Nephew did it, as the violence inflicted points to personal rage of being cut out of the will. Maid could have been paid off by the wealthy family. Anyone investige her finances?
