In 1953, a strange story crept out of the Philippines, when newspapers began reporting on the Dracula Girl, a young, Filipino vagrant, who had been arrested for prostitution and who now appeared to be facing even darker powers, as she battled with a pair of tormentors, collectively known as The Thing. For over two weeks, doctors, reporters, prison guards and inmates watched over the strange behaviour of the young girl, completely at a loss for what to do, until eventually, in stepped a Protestant Pastor with a penchant for evangelism and a conviction that he knew exactly what to do in the situation.

This story immediately reminded me of what happened to my daughter when she was 4 years old. She woke one morning, and came down stairs for her breakfast . Ten minutes after a rash appeared all over her face, arms, and upper torso. They were quite red and raised in appearance, some where circular, some were stripes. I was obviously alarmed. By the time I got her dressed and ready for school they had completely disappeared, nothing, all gone. She went to school but after she came home the rash started again. It appeared that you only had to touch her and a ring or stripe would appear, only to go after an hour or so. it was all very strange. I took her to see my GP who diagnosed urticaria (hives), either from something she had eaten or something I had washed her clothes in or something airborne. Even her tears when she cried caused this horrific rash to form all over her face. The rash lasted about a month and then completely disappeared as quickly as it came. I never found out what caused it, it just happened and has never happened again. She is now 26. I wonder if a similar thing had happened to this young girl, and living in a society who still believed old legends , it was easy to put a supernatural cause to the illness. Just a thought.

I've had urticaria outbreaks before-- very strange and frightening to experience a sudden full body rash for no discernible reason, and then gone again soon after with no lasting marks or ill effects.

I am not beyond believing in demons. My thought is that someone as impressionable as this young female may have found some sort of safety in the religion and was probably buying into what this guy was selling. She was miserable and I'm sure this seemed like a convincing way to find some sort of inner peace. Idk. This was fun tho. My first episode. Your voice is like Andy's voice on the Headspace App. Very calming.

The moment Clarita began screaming as the pastor was about to start, one of my neighbors, who was a female, started screaming as if right on cue. And this neighbor of mine lived in the house across mine. :P In any case, I love this story. Keep it up!

My favorite unknowingly super racist statement was by my grandmother who briefly lived there in the 50s: she thought Filipinos were white because 1) she was white, 2) she was Catholic, 3) Spainards were Catholic. 4) Spainards are white despite being darker than her, therefore Filipinos must be white

As an evangelical Christian myself, I always approach stories like this with skepticism, but especially with regards to the pastors involved. I say that because in my own experience, the line between “work of the Devil” and “neurodivergent” can be blurred to the point of nonexistance in some evangelical churches. Once at a Pentacostal service that I attended, a couple with a healing ministry shared a story of healing an unborn baby from Downs Syndrome by prayer. Considering that some tests for Downs Syndrome are false positives and are unreliable, I didn’t think their prayers changed much. Also, as someone who has a sibling with Downs Syndrome, their attitude toward genetic disorders (implying that such things are not to be accommodated but to be fixed or prayed against) left a bad taste in my mouth. Not all evangelical churches are like this, but I imagine that plenty were in 1950s America. And many people like this pastor and others I’ve met are wrong on some level, but at the same time, their intentions are to help and (sometimes) bring glory to God. The upshot of it all was he found Clarita a home, he founded a church, but he also made a bad film exploiting the whole experience. So ... intentions here may have been half and half? As for “The Thing,” as evangelicals believe that they are possessed by the Holy Spirit, I believe that people can be possessed by demons, but I also believe the Devil is more subtle than most want to believe. Sure, he’ll take circumstances and use them as a means to make individuals suffer, but he’ll also use Stalins, Hitlers, and Sudam Husseins to work evil while trying to convince others they’re fighting a good cause. Just my thoughts as an evangelical!
