Steven Yeun is born in S. Korea and grew in U. S. A, and many of S. Korean Americans shared strongly the notion of Anti-Communism. Actually, that nervous feeling is the theme of the movie call "J. S. A" that is a story about a mystery of murder case of young soldiers of North and South Korea, which is tragedy that they happens to be friends even though is strictly forbidden, but by the nervous feeling, it triggered a brainwashing-y conditioned mind to shoot out each other. I, S. Korean and Son of Ex Korean Army Officer, still have some thought of N. Korea as a threat that makes me nervous as I am thinking about.

DUDE RELAX I've married a Korean, spent many years in Korea, an intimately aware of Korea's situation. Korea is largely safe, but to describe the DMZ as safe is a complete injustice to Korean soldiers. my wife is former Korean Navy, and disgusted by your opinion. It's volatile at best. I think the disconnect is that you don't fully understand what danger means. Furthermore, as is common with everyone in the world, the perception of the US as dangerous is not really true. There are areas that are dangerous, but the vast majority of the nation is completely safe. I won't get shot in the face because my fishing boat got lost in the fog, as has happened at the DMZ, for example.

Fun fact : why do the soldiers wear sunglasses all the time? North Korean soldiers provoke and tend to start fights to South Korean soldiers while on duty. South Korean soldiers are madatorily forbidden to react at any situation unless physical contact. The most frequent insults the North Korean soldiers throw were usually the 'what the hell are you staring at' line so, the Korean military decided to include sunglasses into their official outfit.

@@IronicSonics Pretty sure they aren't in those border conference rooms to begin with. Those wouldn't be open to anyone except to the leaders of the two nations and then only during official peace talks. But they probably have an exact replica of such a conference room in South Korea as a tourist attraction which is not far from the actual border. So Conan and Yuen first went to the actual border, then borrowed the Janet Jackson backup guy during his break and went to the simulated conference room. Because this was done on short notice, they couldn't find a North Korean uniform for the guy playing the North Korean to wear(or Conan suggested this mountie or motorcycle cop look as a counterpoint to the Janet Jackson backup dancer look) and they went with it. It's not all made up because during actual conferences, there would be real North Korean and South Korean guards wearing sunglasses standing on opposite sides and touching or passing them is considered an act of war.

My father was a North Korean defector around August 1991.. a few years later I was born in Seoul. Everything was fine until my 17th birthday in 2009 and I was a month away from graduating, my father disappeared and I never saw him again. He worked as a private contractor for the Korean and US government and wanted to bring me to New York one day. Here I am today with my mother and aunt still living and wondering what happened to him. I'll always be thankful for his sacrifice and I hope he's doing okay.

Dude. There is no fence. If I was a North Korean guard I would drop my Type 88 and run across the border in like the first fire seconds. No way they would dare shoot at a defector because any miss or overpenetrating round would end up on the other side.

The South Korean guards look nice but they are absolute bad asses. The DMZ guard selection process is extremely selective as far as height, weight, and physical fitness. Most of them have blackbelts in Hapkido and Taekwondo.

Strictly speaking DMZ guards do not practice taekwondo. The ROK military ditched taekwondo soon after it was accepted as an olympia sport. Most active personnel study TKM which is a newer more advanced combat system.

I love how the American soldiers in the background find Conan's quips funny during those 2 clips when Conan was interacting with that South Korean soldier. The South Korean soldier seemed like he was hiding his smile too :) It must be refreshing to encounter a bit of comedy in such a seemingly tense job atmosphere to say the least.
