The damper setting can get pretty complicated with buffer numbers, damper numbers, and so forth, so I explain it in simple terms. If you've been looking into the rowing machine, you might have realized it takes more time to finesse the movement than you expected. Well...the rowing machine isn't as simple as we think. So don't let the damper setting add confusion.

Hey Amanda, I heard some people said setting damper to 5.5, 6.5,... does it mean we slide it to the middle of the number to get the 0.5? Thanks in advance

Hey Devin. Thanks for the question. I have personally never heard of people doing a setting like that, however yes, I believe that is what they would mean if they are using those numbers. Hope that helps.

@@TheRowingDoc I'm kind of confuse too. Some said 5.5,... and some said low 5 or high 5. I don't know if there is any difference if you slide the damper to the low 5 (close to 4) vs to the high 5 (close to 6).

@@devinnguyen258 There aren't any other numbers that I can think of for them saying that, so it must mean between 5 and 6 on the damper. If you wanted to play around with it, you could try putting it at 5 then and 5.5 and then at 6 and for each of those check out the drag factor. It might be a subtle change. This is an article from C2 on the drag factor. Let me know if you try it out! www.concept2.com/service/monitors/pm3/how-to-use/viewing-drag-factor

Ok but how does the damper settling affect the digital readout? I do a 10K row in 39 min... with the damper set at 10. Sooo... if I wanted to do a faster 10K row... would settling the damper at 5 help me in that?

Lowering the damper will not necessarily improve your speed. It's based on your strokes per minute and your power output. If you are able to get a better pace (power output from your body) at a lower damper, than that is where you are more optimal. Going to damper of 10 "feels" like we are doing more, but we aren't necessarily doing more. If you can get a better time at a lower damper, you are doing more work. So honestly, try it at a 5 and see, compare for your body and your numbers as everyone is different. Hope that helps.
