@@TDGCmote exactly. It's all about performance now. Not looks. Frankly, I'll gladly take a dodge magnum that looks IDENTICAL to the 2000's age model. Just give it an eco V6 and you have a winner.

Lol, I'm just joking; I'm more interested in how designs ultimately evolved away from these concepts; I don't think I could've escaped so easily from then prevailing tastes. It's amazing how in retrospect one can tell easily from the design cues which cars were to be Chryslers, Dodges, Fords, Thunderbirds, Lincolns Chevrolets, Oldsmobiles,Buicks and Cadillacs. Sometimes there was no guessing simply because the cars had been badged.

The Oil Crisis screwed up the car market in 1973-74. So, the government then authorized automakers to design more fuel efficient cars. Because in those days people wanted safe cars and these were the best, difficult to roll over. That why they had a lot of convertibles. Today's cars are balloons of steel, once you roll, it never seems to stop. They're too high, too fat, too stiff and as a result from that they bounce too much and lose control then roll over and always end up upside down.
@Zynet_Eseled

Thanks for including the '63 Chrysler Turbine. While most concept cars are one-offs and may not even be operable, 50 Turbines were made and driven on the roads. The Citroën DS 19 of 1956, facelifted in 1968, and the Citroën SM, production beginning in 1969, qualify as concept cars yet were produced and sold: over 1.7 million Ds and over 12,000 SMs.

Thanks for your slide show. The "space-age" and "futuristic" styling was all the rage in the 40s, 50s and 60s concept or "dream" cars. Some were shown to the public, but others were kept in design studios. Some did not have running gear or other functional parts. Two of the cars in this video were actual low number production cars, the Chrysler Turbine car at 5:23 and at 1:08 the goofy 3-wheel Davis D-2 Divan. There are also some artist drawings and a couple of custom cars that are modified production cars. If you search the net you can find many more photos of concept cars and there are a number of them that are in museums or private collections. Some concept cars in the last 25-30 years have made it into production with minor changes. The era of fins, bullet shaped bumpers, jet exhausts and bubble tops still await the future of 1960.

Designs were reflective of when America WAS (and believed in) the future. America was the future. We were a different society, we built things and were optimistic: science and technology was number one ... I remember; I was a young kid and remember when "Americans could do it all." Now, we're mostly waiting for somebody else to do it all FOR US! We don't build or create ... we complain.

Deutscher ... (Ich Kann Deutsch, BTW). Oddly, both the Democrats and the Republicans did not put forth a "future" platform: both were backward looking. Trump's Make America Great AGAIN" looked backward. And, Hillary's focusing on social issues that have been resolved for decades looked irrelevant ... I understand that these platforms were a reaction to globalization, but wonder just where that leaves us at the moment. There is, after all, ONLY the Future!
@126Edward

Electrology Now i think that Trumps politic have a perspective because people are tired to pay for a big state who doesnt help them. I dont now the consequenzes of protectionism for the US but i now that the Merkel-Obama opression is out. This is the first way for a better future.

Many of them looked like they were intentionally designed to inflict maximum harm in the unfortunate event of collision. I think most of them would be very difficult to keep clean or free of snow buildup. Some of them were only different trim packages and/or modified body panels of massively produced cars. Once quad copter drone tech, meets invisible fence tech, meets self driving carbon fiber car tech we WILL HAVE OUR FLYING CARS!
