Properly maintaining and cleaning your rowing machine is an important part of ownership. Allow feet to rest on the rail, and sand and grit from shoes drop on the stainless and then become embedded in the softer poly rollers and create friction. Clean your Concept 2 rower with each use and it will reward you with decades of faithful reliable service. This video gives you some pointers on how to clean the wheels and track easily, and reminds you of the importance. Friction = time loss for your splits, so use every tool available to get your lowest possible split!

Alice Downing Amazing how much black crud you end up cleaning off the wheels and rail ungh? Will take a clean paper towel or cloth and turn into a coal miners hankie! Thanks for your comment and glad you now have a smooth ride on your rower

Helpful advice! I recently got my hands on a second-hand Concept 2 rowing machine. I’m on the lookout for a handy accessory or trick that can help me keep the rowing machine’s chain in good condition. Any recommendations from you all?

The problem with this video is that he doesn't mention the name of the liquid he uses. Water? Glass cleaner? Multi-purpose cleaner? Laundry detergent? That omission detracts a great deal from what otherwise is a very informative presentation. I've used the same technique with Windex after every workout for more than ten years. It's safe for both the rail and the rollers and it cleans them very well. Unfortunately, I have no idea what cleaning agent the presenter is using. Is it better than Windex? Who knows?
@ergmeister
@ergmeister 8 лет назад
+sekitori25 I'm sorry you see this as a problem, but all that was used is glass cleaner. You can use water or a little dish soap and water but a wet terry towel with either water or glass cleaner will clean up the debris and residue.

Spot on. Why go to trouble of making a video and not say what’s in the spray bottle? Think of your audience if you want to play expert!

Would be good to know what's in the bottle....

Just a light spray cleaner from the gym where I shot that. Windex also works well.

@Ergmeister ErgRepair, i think that my seat its not comming back nicely becuase its dry, which its the fluid that lubricate the wells ?

What are you using for cleaner? Was that soapy water? Seems a squirt bottle filled with a couple drops of dish washing soap might be good?
@Michael-ou9pp
@Michael-ou9pp 10 лет назад
Dishwashing soap is strong stuff and may dry out the plastic rollers over time. I'm probably going to be safe and just use plain old Windex. I just checked the Concept2 website and they suggest the following: Tools Needed: Cloth Cleaner: soap & water or any glass cleaner NO: Mineral Acids, Bleach, Coarse Abrasives
@ergmeister
@ergmeister 8 лет назад
+Dennis Shumaker Yes, glass cleaner and/or a little soapy water and diaper or terry towel. It comes right off and you can keep the rollers like new if done regularly.

Do we need to oil the wheel? How often do you do it and with what? I clean my track with 6 part water and 1 part bleach.
@ergmeister
@ergmeister 3 года назад
Noah Shapiro: The seat rollers almost never need lubrication in the roller bearings. To oil them if you do, you need to remove the seat, then remove the rollers so you can have access to the bearing and put a drop or two of oil on race. Bleach will help to kill bacteria, but will not do much beyond that. Keeping the wheels clean where they contact the rail is key.
@loganvonstrangle

@@ergmeister ok so i will just keep wiping down the rail carefully. I plan to oil the chain once every other month And maybe the wheel once a year.

"Black flecks on your rail are normal. They are a combination of dirt, perspiration, molydisulfide (a lubricant from the plastic rollers) and a very small amount of the nylon plastic that the rollers are made of. These four components are subjected to the mechanical action of the rollers and can dry and harden on the rail. To remove the black residue, clean the monorail. Wipe the monorail with a cloth or non-abrasive scouring pad after use. You can use soap and water or any glass cleaner. Do not use mineral acids, bleach or coarse abrasives." From the concept2 website. The stainless steel foil on the rail experiences almost zero wear during the entire lifetime of the machine. The polishing on the contacts is just that...polishing.

+volvo245 I disagree with at least the portion of C2's statement that the stainless steel rail cap doesn't wear; it absolutely wears as evidenced by the marks left by the seat rollers while the center remains shiny and like new. In any event, cleaning the rail AND THE WHEELS/ROLLERS should be done with each use.

@@ergmeister should you ever replace the rail due to wear? I have a beaten up model C, the rail is smooth but clearly worn. It is smooth though and the sezt slides on it, would there be any reason to replace this?
@ergmeister
@ergmeister Год назад
I have used semi chrome successfully many times to restore a rail with wear on the roller contact points and you can make the stainless topper look almost new by polishing with simichrome. As long as the seats slide is smooth and if you pull the seat to the rear of the rail and release it it will slowly roll to the front and bounce off the nose then the topper is clean and the wheels are sufficiently clean

I can add, that every time my machine is cleaned and dried, I'm polishing rail with WD40. Its keeps rail clean longer and makes cleaning much easier.

Maxym Ko: I've had great success cleaning and polishing rails with SIMICHROME, a German chrome polish.

@@ergmeister finally a piece of cloth with silicon lubricant works the best. Didn’t clean the rail by years!

good video...it definitely brought my splits down a bit. do you think concept 2 will ever bring out a model F ? and if so. when?
@ergmeister
@ergmeister 3 года назад
Carl Green: I wouldn't take a guess at what the next evolution of rower from C2 will look like. The Model E is exactly the same as the D except it is positioned higher with longer legs and is intended for use mobility impaired users.

The key to splits is the drag factor. Gym rowers tend to be beaten up and not maintained well. Set the damper on the cage to what you want. Next navigate the PM3/PM4 display to drag factor. Start pulling and note the number. The more dust in the machine the SLOWER your split will be. A new Model D should have drag factor range from 90-100 at damper 1 and 210-220 at damper 10. I pull at drag factor 115 and the damper setting to get that varies on every machine. email me:ergrepair@gmail.com
