It is a Street Organ, a traditional instrument from the Netherlands. This one is modern, dating from about 1990. It was made in the Netherlands for Damon O'Donohue who for many years travelled to country shows an fairs with it. These instruments wok with bellows puffing air, like other organs. Nowadays there is an electric motor and fan, but in older instruments a small steam engine would have powered the bellows. The organ pipes, drums, clackers, whistles and bells are all operated automatically using sheets of pierced card, similar to the paper rolls used fr pianolas In this case the card is not rolled but is flat folded sheets of board which unfold during the playing. The tune is created by pierced holes in the board. They are in rows, each row corresponding to a particular pipe, bell or drum. This is one of the finest mechanical instruments in Australia.
