Conchita Cruz is Co-founder and Co-Executive Director of the Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project, where she brings her decade of work in communications, policy, and the law-together with her lived experience as the daughter of a Guatemalan immigrant and Cuban refugee-to bear on behalf of asylum seekers across the U.S. Previously, Conchita served as a Deputy Chief of Staff to U.S. Congressman Jared Polis; Chief of Staff for New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera; policy and political advisor for local, state, and federal candidates in Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, and New York; and a community organizer for the Central American Resource Center. She also served as a law clerk to Judge Cecilia M. Altonaga in Florida’s Southern District. Conchita has been recognized with an Emerson Collective Dial Fellowship, a Roddenberry Fellowship, and a Skadden Fellowship. She has a degree in International Studies and Latin American Studies from Brown University and a JD from Yale.
The Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP) is the largest membership organization of asylum seekers in the world, with more than 500,000 members from 175 countries living in every U.S. state and territory. Members navigating the U.S. immigration system access ASAP’s resources millions of times per year-and work together to pursue litigation, strategic communications, and advocacy for systems change. ASAP’s service-to-action model combines community building, legal resources, and collective advocacy to provide legal and community support to its membership of asylum seekers, and to build a more welcoming United States.
