Martina often had great trouble controlling her shots and was the most inconsistent of the women’s greats. The heavy ball of Martinez spinning off the grass was never going to work out in Martina’s favor.
Ma il telecronista che fa ? Non ho mai sentito una partita di tennis descritta così.... Forse sará stata la prima volta che vedeva una partita di tennis. . Mancava solo che dicesse goal dopo un 30 a 15 in favore della Martinez.....
Conchita seems to have had Martina's number, winning 4 of their 5 meetings (although admittedly 4 of them were on clay in Rome). Her mixture of heavy topspin and great passing shots was a tough one for Martina.
The surface and age were a factor. Clay was Martina’s weakest surface and she didn’t win a title on clay after 1990 I don’t believe. Martina only lost 2 games when she beat conchita in1990 on clay. Martina’s body started breaking down and all of conchita’s titles mostly came on clay against a 34,35 and 37 year old Martina. Conchita wasn’t even on tour at that age herself. Peak Martina, even on clay would dominate conchita. Conchita was lucky Steffi was knocked out of this event. She had a pretty easy draw as Davenport was still too young to win a major and Lori was solid but never came close to winning a major. If Jana won her match against Martina, she would have been hard to stop in the final. Conchita was unlucky to have never won the French. Gaby was too.
@@moviefan4life166Conchita definitely lucky not have had to play Jana, Steffi or Arantxa that Wimbledon (or for that matter Monica Seles). Conchita always struggled in the big matches against them back in the 90s.
Insoportable el comentarista! Qué diferencia con la BBC y la NBC! No tienes el partido con narración de ETB-1 en Euskera?? Gracias por todos estos partidos de Conchita y Arantxa! Soy adicto a tus canales!
Indeed. She played to win. Her crosscourt backhand was the shot of the match. She had a consistent backhand throughout her career, but sadly I never saw her hit it as aggressively as she did in this match. I think she was too tentative often in her career.
At the start of her career, who would have guessed Conchita's only slam win would be Wimbledon and that she would beat none other than the Queen of Grass herself. This was a well earned victory. When Conchita was forced to be aggressive, the results speak for themselves. It's a shame that most of her career she was too passive and I think it cost her more slam titles. But nonetheless, what an amazing talent. Her ball control was unmatched in my opinion... even Chris Evert did not have the accuracy of this lady.
I agree. She was way too passive so often. I think she did well when she had a target, but she struggled against the big power players who could hit her off the court like Seles and Steffi. Even Arantxa usually had her way with her.
Martina serve and approaches were 50 percent of the prime Martina of 84 , 85, 86 87. Martina like Evert had individuall great matches but after 1990 Martina was unable to string 2-3 great matches in a row . Martina was 38! Here , half a step slow to net leaving cross court for conchita to hit topspin backhands that dipped at the net making it more difficult for Martina to volley away . Chris , Martina , Steffi all won their first and last slam titles in same slam 😢hey first win in exactly 12 yrs apart . Chris 74-86, French navratilova 78-90, Graf 87-99 French
