BRITISH PATHÉ'S STORY
Before television, people came to movie theatres to watch the news. British Pathé was at the forefront of cinematic journalism, blending information with entertainment to popular effect. Over the course of a century, it documented everything from major armed conflicts and seismic political crises to the curious hobbies and eccentric lives of ordinary people. If it happened, British Pathé filmed it.
Now considered to be the finest newsreel archive in the world, British Pathé is a treasure trove of 85,000 films unrivalled in their historical and cultural significance.
British Pathé also represents the Reuters historical collection, which includes more than 136,000 items from the news agencies Gaumont Graphic (1910-1932), Empire News Bulletin (1926-1930), British Paramount (1931-1957), and Gaumont British (1934-1959), as well as Visnews content from 1957 to the end of 1984. Yes and the Russian copy failed dramatically at the Paris airshow, whilst the American supersonic airliner never made it past the design stage. As such the US did everything they could to ban Concorde, claiming that the noise was too loud. In the end it was all sour grapes and Concorde flew to the USA regularly.

@@jamesmurphy3807 I mean to be fair, there were very valid reasons why Concorde was abandoned. While it was, without a doubt, an Engineering masterpiece and a great piece of work, it was uneconomical. There wasn't enough demand for Concorde as it was expensive and burned huge amounts of fuel. That said, I would like to see her return today. With improvements to fuel efficiency, concorde could be viable again, maybe.

@@martinduran9523 - Amen. Its design basically allowed it to fly by brute force. Its first flight was three weeks *after* the Boeing 747 in 1969 however 54 years later, the 747 is still flying and the Concorde is retired 20 years. The bottom line is that *speed eats fuel* since drag increases with the *square* of the velocity. The technology at the time for the engines (Olympus 593 turbojet) was primitive and the design goal was to simply get something working any way possible. But being a pig on fuel meant that the cost per passenger was $7000 per flight. The 747 could be flown to many more destinations for 1/10 that cost.

No Cad designers in those days, it was all done by calculations using slide rules and draftsmen in drawing offices. Every drawing would be checked and then signed off and approved before parts and assemblies were made by skilled engineers. A brilliant example of collaboration by British and French engineers. An amazing achievement. I was 9 years old when this first flight took place. Over the following years my pals and I used to be so exited to see Concorde fly overhead during the many test flights. It was such an exciting time, we had Concorde, Hovercrafts, and astronauts flying to the moon in powerful rockets. We saw the British V bombers and the fabulous English Electric Lighting interceptor flying, not to mention the Harrier jump jet. We saw the first mainstream computers and pocket calculators gradually appearing. Not forgetting colour TV (incidentally in our house we only had electricity installed in 1967, just 2 years before this film was made!). In 1976 I began my engineering apprenticeship, still using drawings done by hand and in imperial measurements. If a metric drawing appeared we would convert it to imperial measurements -about 2 years later when metric drawings started to become the norm, we would do the reverse and convert imperial drawings to metric! Such an amazing era, and so exciting.

Miles Y Despite Concorde and Tupolov 144 being fast and beastly planes they had many issues and were quite unreliable. Concorde's owners were a corporation and money was their goal, USSR had just entered perestroika reforms which would end up destroying the economy because well... Capitalism The Tupolov Tu-144 was eventually abandoned as well as they never fixed it mainly duo to the introduction of market elements increasing corruption and state selling off big business started spending money in things that were not beneficial to anyone but the elite class that sprung up thus Tupolov was left to fend for themselves but refused to fix anything with the Tupolov. In the end both the planes were killed off because the big boys who made them, refused to further the research and make improved designs simply because it was too costly Tupolov was privatised in the 90s and they had fuck all resources to barely keep their production plants working. The Brits and French was loosing money with the Concorde, not making any. We might have had them had USSR not collapsed and perestroika not happened then Tupolov would have been forced to make an improved design and the west would have feelt compelled to throw money at the Concorde design to improve it and we would enjoy some super sonic airliners. There might be future designs you never know but currently its just cheaper to fly old and wobbly jet airliners.

Well without Gorbachev's reforms the USSR's economy was going to collapse, and supersonic airliners were simply too young. Fluctuating fuel prices and efficiency killed it early, if the Concorde happened today, it would be a better story.

In 1971 this 001 ,with the same pilot made a flight from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro in 95 minutes !, in a demonstration looking for air companies that buy it.By the same time ,the Boeing 747 appeared,the biggest competitor...,and we know the rest of the story.Anyway ,Concorde was the most beautiful and swift airplane that ever existed in civil aeronautics.

That by 1969 British aeronautical engineer's and a couple of French blokes (I'm joking x) could have come up with a passenger aircraft that can fly faster than most bullets should - in blow our minds. It's now late 2023 and 54 years have past. About time the human race pulled it's socks up! Rather than navel gazing at the latest hand held fancy tech. All that early pioneering spirit, reduced to queues outside a department store. It's sad.

While Concorde was ahead of it's time, it wasn't cost effective. Just to taxi to the runway, Concorde used about the same amount of fuel that would keep a car going for 6 months. Plus, the Sonic booms it'd produce would shatter windows of houses/businesses around 3 miles away. People hated the constant sound, which also had a hand in putting Concorde out of service. But what ultimately sealed the deal (in my opinion) was when an Air France Concorde crashed into an airport hotel just short of takeoff. It was found that a piece of metal from a flight before it was sitting on the runway, and when Concorde ran over it the piece flew up and struck the fuel tanks underneath the wings, igniting a massive fireball as it took flight. But, she was a marvelous piece of human engineering, which made cross Atlantic flights possible in just mere hours. A shame she had to go.

@@hoedemakerbart It puzzles me on how the DC-10 managed to stay in service but something as revolutionary as concorde was disbanded solely due to one piece of rubber and a metal rod which belonged to another aircraft causing a catastrophic failure . They should have upgraded the engine to consume way less fuel with extra safety measures .Instead they disbanded it and took a step back in aviation.

In 2007, I was able to see and actually enter a Concorde plane in Barbados in the museum they hold one of the planes in. I don’t know if they still do that, but it was amazing to hear so much about history when I was just 8 years old. It was an amazing moment in my life

d1rkn They're too expensive to maintain and run. The Concorde only did 14 MPG. Fuel efficiency and noise level is their main concern at this point, I believe.

William J. Taylor Incorrect, Concorde was a huge, huge money maker for British Airways. Air France was the problem along with Airbus, they were not using them efficiently and started the stupid procedure to ground the fleet.

I love the good-and-old Concored, It has the luxurious atmosphere of a comfortable flight in a Supersonic aircraft, However flying one single concorde isn't cheap, only Rich people could afford a flight, also influencers had 10% cheaper price ticket. The concored is basicly a example of how supersonic planes in the future will look like, the concored Succesfully flew through the skies like a bird in 1969 In france at 2:56p.m.

Perhaps this was the high water mark of the petroleum age? The most beautiful machine ever to grace the air? I was fortunate enough to see one fly at the Abbotsford Airshow in Canada, and still treasure the memory. Seeing Concorde in real life is light years more impressive that watching a video. But video is all future generations will have.

I was fortunate enough to fly on Concorde twice, the first time I was only in my teens. You can not imagine my excitement! It was and remains not only a beautiful aeroplane but an incredible engineering achievement. Perhaps out of place in today’s world many will say, but what a chapter in aviation history.

The only reason Concorde isn't in service anymore is because airlines care more about squeezing as many people onto planes and then overcharging them for everything, than they do convenience. I'd LOVE to fly from NY to London in 3.5 hours. But no. The airlines have seen fit that everyone fly 16-hour overnight flights, arriving at their destination exhausted and drained. This is why we need not only Concorde back, but ocean liners, too. And before you ask, there's a very fine line between ocean liners and cruise ships. Ocean liners are used for actual transportation, while cruise ships are just big floating hotels that go to various ports-of-call before going back to where the cruise started. Only relocation cruises could be considered actual transportation.

What makes this scene scary is that the test pilots actually risked their lives to fly the plane. Back then it was do or die literally if Concorde could fly because this was obviously the first time a supersonic airliner was going to fly along with the Russian TU 144. While Concorde wasn't rushed, in those days building these kind of planes was dangerous work including testing via wind tunnels as there wasn't safety equipment we have now. Obviously people feared Concorde wouldn't fly and instead crash or it would take to the air but again come down and crash. But Concorde defied all the odds and proved she was indeed airworthy which made Concorde even more famous.

if the aircraft going out before the fatal air France one, had not lost a part from it onto the runway , there would have not been this accident ? My opinion.

It was uneconomic to run and spare parts were not available in the latter years. You are right about this incident not happening, but still the Concorde would have been shelved. The Airbus and Boeing 777 , well they are profitable and more comfortable to fly on.

Does anyone know of the 1980s Concorde documentary? I'm guessing early 80s. I watched it with my dad as a kid and loved it. The background music was all synthesizers. I'd love to see it again.
