Hey it's obvious you put a lot of work into this and you should be proud of yourself. The only thing that I would say for anybody wanting to do this is take the time to use copper plumbing. One slip and someone could break that beautiful faucet right off of those plastic fittings and a lot of work would be "down the drain"

Very cool concept, I’m definitely stealing this idea. Would be cool if you could wait to do final finish coat on the floor and do it at the same time as the tub to eliminate any “seam” between the tub and the floor. Might be tricky but I might try it on a tiny bathroom I have coming up on a rehab project, will definitely try to take photos/videos to share when I do. Any details about materials used would be appreciated. Thx for the inspiration!

Hi Daniel. Thank you for sharing this. I've been asked to build a Japanese style soaking tub, and in researching have come upon your fantastic piece of functional art along with a tutorial for how you accomplished it. Beautiful work man. I have a question regarding the drain sysstem (I am not a plumber and the plumber I typically use is not interested in exploring beyond the standard, typical set-ups) - so is this a 2" pvc coming out of the floor with a pop-up on the inside? Any special fixtures involved in-between or simply glued together? Advice appreciated.
@danielgautschi2085
@danielgautschi2085 Год назад
Very welcome I’m happy you got inspired, yes it’s a standard 2” drain with a standard pvc reduction piece to 1 1/4” for that particular pop up copper drain piece, I didn’t glued that part into the reduction because the fit inside was perfect and pretty long with the extension tube , if I ever would have to replace it, it would be a simple minor fix

Thanks for your question... in the last 10years since I’m building this particular technique I never had any repairs required, I’m using high end brand material and plumbing/faucets, drain etc.. I can get parts to replace, I’m living in a high earthquake area and I never had any issues. If I have to cut out a part it’s quite easy not like solid concrete.. with the stucco like finishing it’s very hard to notice a repair if you use the same mixtures

Hello Daniel, What a beatiful bathtub you have made! I am inspired by you and this tub and I considering to try to do the same in our bathroom. This video is really detailed and my father in law is a contracter/carpenter so I think we might can pull it of ;) But I do have one question: is the finished result heavy? So I think the foam itself is really lightweight but do all the layers on top of the foam add a lot of weight? The reason I ask this is because our bathroom is on the second floor of the house (a regular european brick and wooden beam house) I would like to know your thoughts on this. And in any case thanks for sharing your video! Kind Regards, Michelle

Hi Michelle, Absolutely no problem , I just build a sitting tub 🛀 with a very similar Volumen in my shop and then transported it to my clients site to mount it there.. I guess it weighs around 150 kgs, we carried it around with 3 people. If I add all the raw material of plaster it sums up to that .. then add the amount of water plus two people taking a bath.. you might end up with 300-max 400 kgs . ...this is the best bathtub you can imagine, the water stays hot for a super long time and it feels great on your skin .. let me know how it goes, enjoy the experience .

We made a concrete tub in our home renovation and it was only afterwards I thought about insulation.. 😫 My fiance thinks the concrete will hold heat well by itself but I don't think so! It's a sunken tub in a pier and beam house, I wonder if we can can just go underneath it and add some sort of insulation... but the concrete itself is so thick I wonder if that would be pointless.
@danielgautschi2085
@danielgautschi2085 Год назад
Ideally the layers of fiber-plaster/ concrete on top of the insulation should be to the minimum strength requirements approx not less than 1” . If you have let’s say 4-5” of concrete and worth into the ground, it will take a lot of energy hot water to heat up the mass and it will also cool of quite fast , in the insulated technique the water stay hot for hours from the very beginning

Hi, on this tub I used about two 20 kg bags tile plaster bond platinum quality and three 40 kg Portland cement/ sand ready mix for construction block wall .. plus nylon mesh and fibers and 1/4 liquid acrylic plaster additive plus 20 kg stucco porcelain finish and 1/4 concrete exterior sealer
@danielgautschi2085

where do you buy the hard Styrofoam from ??? any links to products would be so appreciated also what does "humidify surface" mean exactly like making it wet with a cloth first or having the air in the room be humid ? just for clarity
@danielgautschi2085
@danielgautschi2085 Год назад
I’m able to buy the block of styrofoam from a manufacturer company here in Costa Rica and for oversize I glue the elements together with high end flex super bonder for ceramic tiles. Humidify means keeping the Portland based cement layer and stuccos always wet because of the cure for the oxidizing chemical reaction required, keep cement humid for as long as possible makes it harder and harder

That is a great question, it would be a new little challenge for do such a project, I guess the only part that has to be done in a flexible way would be the fittings for drain and faucet, maybe choose another shape/ design specially the floor connection that would make it easier to attach things

Nice and a lot of work. It looks amazing...but wouldn't it crack and break easily being Styrofoam?
@danielgautschi2085
@danielgautschi2085 Год назад
It’s a type of reinforced fiber cement that becomes so strong that the styrofoam becomes irrelevant for its strength, the foam makes it easier to shape the form and later it acts perfect as a insulation and keeps the water hot for a very long time, it’s like a thermos bottle to keep beverages hot
