Driver and passenger miraculously survived and walked away after a semi-truck carrying a structural concrete beam load-shifted while braking, broke free, and sheared the cab off the truck!

This exact same scenario happened to a fellow trucker ahead of me in a convoy when a bread van turned left in front of him. Only, there were no survivors. To better explain, we were hauling beams going to a bridge being built over the causeway in St Simons Island around 1986. It was about 0500 hrs, dark and foggy (should not have had a permitted load underway in those conditions.) He was trying to pass the bread van when it turned left into his path. The truck driver was killed as were two occupants of the bread van. Along with the lives lost the highway was shut down for two days to remove the wreckage and the construction project was shut down for two months because of the loss of the beam which had to be recreated.

I'd love to know the story, that prestressed/precast concrete generally doesn't move. In fact it's hard to get it to slide when you want it to slide
@kennethloki7011
@kennethloki7011 7 месяцев назад
That section is called a "double T". The two vertical legs are roughly 6" wide each. Depending on the concrete mixture and the internal rebar/strand a double t that size weighs between 30 and 40 thousand pounds. That much weight on such a small contact area means they can move with less force than people probably think. There should be a cradle under 1 end of it to help it flex with the trailer but I don't see one here. Chain placement should be calculated for optimal safety but it's up to the driver to actually follow instructions on the hold down points.
@joecummings1260
@joecummings1260 7 месяцев назад
@@kennethloki7011 Well I never hauled those sections, but I've hauled lots of precast boxes and vaults for utility construction, and lots of big ones weighing like double those numbers, and I've never had a problem with them sliding. But then again who knows what idiotic thing this guy did with his chains, binders, or straps. I'll bet there was nothing around the front pulling back

@wallochdm1
@wallochdm1 7 месяцев назад
@@juliogonzo2718 Not my load, but my company's rule is that if you can not properly secure it, the load doesn't move. You can get pretty creative w/straps and binders. Plus, what was the "heavy braking"? When you drive a load like this, everything is gradual and gentle. Not enough information on what happened, but when you have a load like this, you plan to NOT brake heavily. Are you even a driver? Your pilot car driver should be warding off strays and alerting you to hazards.

@CongoChango
@CongoChango 7 месяцев назад
This is more the truck owners fault than anything!! As A retired 40 yrs driver, nothing is more stupid than owning a truck with no cab protection in place on any truck hauling any flatbed operation!!! No headboard no headache rack nothing!! This is pure utter stupidity . No driver should drive any truck especially oversized or overweight products that are abundantly dangerous with no protection on rear of cab. I see this stupid shit daily. Steel or coils anything that will move won’t stop when the truck does instantly. The load will always go forward, and usually it kills either the driver or motorist without a protection system in place behind the cab . Anyone who pulls any flatbed or oversized loads is a complete fool with no cab protection.

@@CongoChango This wasn't a collision. This was braking.
