Timeless song with meaningful, honest lyrics and a great sound. Perfect way to wrap up the 80s and kick off the 90s. Johnette Napolitano is an incredible vocalist.

I wasn't crazy about it when it came out either. Musically, I was somewhere very different. Now, though, I can't listen without tears. I guess the power of her vocal performance, and the vulnerable honesty in the words. I guess I grew into the song. No one said it and sang it like her. I'm totally in love with this song now.

Ugh, that voice. Instantly recognizable. Johnette Napolitano could sing the ingredients on a cereal box and would be glorious.

This is such a sad, beautiful song. "Joey, I'm not angry any more." is so heartbreaking. In other words, she knows he's not going to change, she knows his addiction is going to kill him, but she loves him so much that she's chosen to stay with him any way, be there when it takes him. She's given on up on a happy ending, given up on everything, except for him - even in his desperate state. God, it's just gut-wrenching.

I recommend “Mexican Moon” by Concrete Blonde from the album of the same name. “Walking in London” is also a great Concrete Blonde track. Awesome band, and lead singer Janette Napolitano was a great front woman in their early 90s run. Thanks for this request, from the album Bloodletting.

To get the full effect you have to watch the video. It is a great song but the video hits home
@clayboutin400
@clayboutin400 Год назад
I was going to mention that if she had watched the video she would have seen that the song was about her (the lead singer Johnette Napolitano) relationship with an alcoholic. But even with that, Angela favors the tear jerking, emotional songs more.
@bossfan49
@bossfan49 Год назад
I'm gonna disagree. If you need a video to get the full effect of a song- that implies the songwriter and/or performers didn't do their job very well. Nothing wrong with enjoying a video, but it's a whole separate thing.
@erickent3557
@erickent3557 Год назад
Well, you don't HAVE to watch it. For me, the visuals don't match my personal vision of the story, so, the video detracts for me.

Concrete Blonde has been my favorite band since I first heard them at the young age of 19 while in the Army stationed in Germany 1990. For me they have no songs that are bad and I'm now 51 and still listen to them all the time. You are the only reactor on RU-vid that I've seen who's reacted to them so I immediately subscribed, thank you for that it's obviously up to you but you should react to more.of them.

Back when the song was released, I thought it was pretty awesome with her voice, the tempo, and the catchy drum riffs. Then I had the song meaning explained to me by a "Un-named" band member from "Wall of Voodoo" at a sound studio. The song still exemplifies the reality of having to deal with an alcoholic you love. If you don't get it, most never will. It is one of my top songs of all time.

One of my favorite bands for a long time now. Glad you picked up on Johnette’s voice- it’s always been incredible and powerful. Totally its own unique sound and she can belt like nobody’s business. This was really their only semi-successful single. It’s the one most people know by them. But they went much deeper and stronger on their albums than this.
@bigk4755

Great reaction. I had forgotten about Concrete Blonde, probably because I am not listening to the radio that much anymore (too damn many commercials and yapping for my tastes). Janette Napolitano has a great power singer that really should have gotten more recognition for her vocal work. I can understand your ambivalence about Joey since that song is about a love affair that has it's struggles. Angela you should check out Mexican Moon, also by Concrete Blonde. You will really like that one, I think.
@GTR0419

The song isn't strictly really about a love affair. It's about addiction. Sure, it affects the relationship, but it's darker than the normal struggles.

Concrete Blonde's Bloodletting album is an absolute Gem 💎 one of those listen through albums without a single bad track - I think this was the only single from it which seems odd given the strength of the album.

Today's music sucks there is nothing that comes even close to this this is so heavy compared to the crap that's on the radio now why why can't we make anything worthwhile. I knew this was cool when it came out in 1990 how come young people today don't crave something that's cool

Honestly? Unquestionably the weakest song on the LP. On the tour - or at least the show I saw - about halfway thru they kicked it into overdrive and turned into a Punk song. That being said good for you for listening to the song. The entire LP has this very personal/painful vibe. And yes to back up what other people said they were a great live band. & James Mankey always play d the right guitar for the songs. "Heal It Up" & "God is a Bullet" are more powerful songs (neither on this LP).
