West Coast Bushcrafters
Condor Hudson Bay
The Condor Hudson Bay. A true heavy-duty camp knife. It was a lot of fun to test this knife out! With its big dimensions it looks quite brutal and at the same time a bit old school.
Bought for its expected chopping and batoning qualities it delivered above expectation. Pure joy to baton with this knife.
Unfortunately there is no hole to tie up a lanyard at the back of this knife. That is something we will modify in future.
Overall a great big camp knife to take along instead of an axe. Good for the big work, not so handy for the precision jobs.

This type of knife was very common to where i live 150+ years ago... the Red River Valley of Manitoba, Canada. A favourite with indigenous, frontiersmen and settlers alike. Cheers

yeah i firmly believe that the Hudson bay is a seriously epic budget option for even serious bushcraft, as well as just casual camping. i've found it carves REALLY well for its size, as well as it also makes for a pretty damn good skinning knife in a pinch, though as a chopper/carver its pretty hard to beat given the price and size. its a lot of knife for not a lot of money! great review as well!

Hi! Thanks a lot for your comment! We fully agree with you! Really nice to find such a sturdy knife for that price. Not afraid to use and abuse it:). Thanks!

I carry a small hatchet made in the early 1900s. The maker is Plumb. It has the Boyscout Logo on it. I use it for chopping wood for fire, and shelter. My sheath knife is a Cattraugus 225Q. I also carry a two bladed Bare head Jack made by Cattaraugus in my pocket. If I am camping with my sons or friends I have a special camping box that has my lantern, stove, coffee pot, and pots and pans plus extra items I use in a large multiple person camp. Included in this box is a WWI Bolo, and a very thick and heavy Meat Chopper. The thickness of the Bolo is 1/4 inch and the Meat Chopper is 5/8 this inch. I use these for cutting up game. For fish I have a regular fillet knife made by Case. I have thought about getting a Hudson Bay Knife but do not like the modern version from Condor! I like the original look of the 18800s knife with just two pins holding the handle on.

Hi! Thanks for sharing details about your equipment. Sounds like you are well prepped and intresting to hear you use knives and hatchets with an historical value. Makes it easy to understand why you prefer the original 1800 look instead of this version. Take care

It’s a very fun knife (I’ve had it for a few years) and it’s true it’s lighter than a hatchet, but we all know that a knife is no match for a good hatchet and you are going to use a lot more energy trying to do the same tasks with the knife than you would with the hatchet 😏

I also appreciate the more affordable knives. I don't ever see myself paying barkriver prices. I like to stay around $150US and below. I believe most knives above that are just marketing and branding. But lately everything has went up in prices. Yet quality and materials hasn't changed.

If you like this type of knife, it is hard to beat the Terävä Skrama 240, it chops way better than the Hudson bay .
@westcoastbushcrafters
@westcoastbushcrafters Год назад
Thanks for bringing the terävä as a knife to compare with the hudson bay. It is in more or less the same price range isn’t it? Would be interesting to test that one out one day😁👍
@supernova1976

@@westcoastbushcrafters yes similar price range and similar historic design taken from and old Scramasax or Seax. Like the Hudson bay based on an old frontier America knife style . Would be a nice comparison indeed 👍

The handle was coming off my skrama 240 after only a month which is not a problem as I just hammered it back down after I epoxy it.

I enjoyed your review. I bought one of these several years ago and I found the handle too small for the size of the blade, so I popped off the factory scales and replaced them with curly maple scales sized to better fit my hand and balance that big blade.

I think you should try out the real bad Scandinavian boy. The Brisa Bigmuk. I have used one for some 6 months. I often use it with really difficult knotty and twisted wood like elmwood and beachwood. Wood where I often fail using an axe.

I have an original Hudson Bay camp (or Chief) knife. It's marked "FOX" and the logo is the top of the HBC's coat of arms : a fox sitting on a cap.... (it's not a NON XXL JUKES COULSON & CO) My best guess is it was a local Lower Canada blacksmith shop's work. Blade thickness: 7,3 mm Blade height: 4.4 cm It has lost about 1/4 of the blade height due to use and sharpening. Total length: 33,3cm Weight total: 505 gram... the handle is mostly likely oak, with brass plates on the top. I'd say it was made in some sort of "layering" steel work, the knife has a big chip that reveals what I believe is 2 types of steel. Did they make "San mai" in Lower Canada back in the days? Anyhow, I wanted to state that the "right side" of the blade is pretty much flat... the sharpening looks more like an axe than a knife to be frank. Big bevel. I never tried to make those fire starter feathers... but being flat must have helped doing so. The top side must have been hit by a baton a thousand times!!! Too bad I can't post a picture here. Maybe on a sunny day I'll go out and make a video...

would you prefer this beast or a Leuku? Or a bowie?
@westcoastbushcrafters
@westcoastbushcrafters Год назад
Hi! That would be in many cases this beast😁. It is not that expensive for so much knife you get for it, easy to sharp and it has a nice weight. Maybe not the best handle but just a workhorse deluxe 👍. Our leuku have thinner blades which makes it less attractive for batoning. Other fun options we have are the A2 and tundra 3 camp but those are at least twice as expensive.
