If you are going to try and use it to coat rubber bushings on a boat engine and run it all day it will absolutely fall off. In between the two extremes it's going to be trial and error I'm afraid.
Sorry mate, I am guarding this one. It's not that easy to make - a bit beyond the home chemist but easy for industry - and I know there are people out there who will steal it for their own profit and that just seemed a shame to me. I like to help as you know but on this one it seemed a thin line between helping and being a bit foolish
cheers mate. The patent is compositional that is it essentially declares a specific formulation. The methodology for producing the graphene sheets isn't really at the heart of the patent. Honestly, Vorbeck are wasting their time and money patenting this as it is ridiculously easy to side step they really would have been better protecting it by trade secret. If it turns out to be any good you can bet your life, in about 6 months half a dozen companies will be producing alternatives
Hiya mate - it would be good for apaer based electronics but I wouldn't approach a supercapacitor this way there just isn't enough surface area available for a good supercapacitor
and they will have Vorbeck to thank for telling them where to start. If Vorbeck had just kept quiet everybody would have been in the dark wondering where to go. Now they know exactly where to start.
It's in a polymer matrix which is why the conductivity is a bit low. But, it also means it doesn't shed, crack or flake. Well no more than any acrylic based paint. If you went at it hammer and tongs it would without a doubt crack and flake - but so would any paint. It's the same thing for adhesion to the substrate. It's directly related to ink adhesion to the substrate and the amount of flex it would be subjected to. For a decorative finish on an object sitting in a room - it would be fine.

Hi Robert, excellent work you've done here. I have been consistently impressed with your research. I wanted to bring to your attention US patent application WO 2013074712 A1. They aim to patent conductive inks made with graphene, acids, and optionally polymers. I'm no expert, but doi:10.1021/nl080604h appears to be prior art. Could you maybe take a look? If prior art is submitted to the USPTO, the patent can be blocked. The Ask Patents (google for it) has a lot of info on this process.
Excellent video, very clean to follow. I am a high school student and I am working on a research project to do with electroplating. I will be attempting to make a conductive ink like the one in this video that would be capable of plating a non-conductive material and would not dissolve in the solution. I have watched another one of your videos where you explain the process of making conductive ink using gum arabic as the binder, but would that be waterproof and suitable for the process of electroplating? Another great video Robert. The electroplating is something that I have not done but I understand the basics. Going back to the painting of the paper with the ink would then plating it with copper then pave the way forward to creating a super capacitor. If my rambling makes no sense I will email.
I was waiting for the Blue Peter moment with anticipation...and there it was, at about 2:35 :) That ink is a very nice product idea, best wishes with it ! Imagine a leaf with a patina over winter rather than decaying to nothing. Could make organic circuit boards, copper+mg for power from the Earth, to blocking osc circuit + LED, all wiring being tree twigs or grass.
I was wondering whether graphite ink is suitable for most applications. It's much easier to make graphite ink industrially and hence would be cheaper. I hope you can shed some light on this. Another question: you see on the web various companies that claim to be selling graphene ink. But would not the restacking cause whatever graphene in the ink to turn into graphite? Thanks
Graphite inks are certainly very useful. The additives you put in to make the ink have quite an effect on things like conductivity and the additives can stop the restacking. It's obviously a balance between having too much in the way of additive as opposed to accepting a degree of restacking
Hi! We use a professional electrolyse bath normally used for gold jewellery and graphite spray paint 33 to coat or object with several layers of graphite spray. We tried to make a golden leaf, but somehow nothing happens. Do you have any ideas about what we could be doing wrong?

I have looked endless videos about copper plating ink and various methods. Also I have looked at all your videos and you I can see know what your talking about, so can I buy some of your ink . I am just starting to plate and a lifetime of engineering has told me get everything right before I start.

Does the ink shed graphite particles once dry in the situation its used as is and not electroplated after? How about flexibility, does the ink reduce cracking of the electroplate or will it eventually flake off?
For crafts, to make jewellery, decorations, home decor, gifts... It makes something more robust and waterproof. There are endless reasons for plating things!

you can use lots of things - graphite is good as is zinc flake and copper nanoparticles - i use a fair bit of graphene = but graphite is a good place to start as it is easy to get hold of and easy to handle
