@???? ????? Removing statues =/= removing history. There are these things called museum and books that teach people about history. You don't learn about history by looking at statues just ask anyone who studies history.
I agree...General Robert E. Lee opposed slavery. He fought against it in his Sate of Virginia. The Federal government had passed reasonable legislation making it illegal to release the Africans into the general population and Lee, being the stupid liberal that he was, hated that shit. Once the war started he released his slaves. Abe Lincoln was pro slavery when he was elected.
I need some specifics tho. Are we talking Miami LeBron or Cleveland LeBron? What if he put different black basketball players on different Confederate statues? Here's a list: 06 Dwayne Wade 01 Shaquille O'Neal 94 Hakeen Olajuwon Vince Carter on the Raptors Julius Erving from the 76ers Kobe Bryant ofc So many more as well
As a certified mentally unstable Scandinavian I wouldn't get to vote on this either - but if I did, I would vote for adding Jam Master Jay piggy back riding Robert E Lee who has two turntables and a mixer glued to his hat and the horse carrying big ass speakers as saddle backs....
3:28 _People say, "We want to remember the history of the civil war."_ How about you put up statues of the *winning* generals and soldiers? No? Exactly.
These statues should be moved into a museum. You keep statues in a museum to be remembered, you keep them in public to be respected. The confederate statues were built as racist statements during the highest periods of anti-black animosity in the South, durring the 1900s resurgence of the KKK, and the 1950s opposition to the civil rights movement. Keeping them up would be a symbol of modern racism in America. But nationalist are right about 'not forgetting history'. They should be moved into museums and schools need to teach about the cause behind their contruction.
Beyond Lorien Wrong. They were built by the daughters and sons of the confederacy to remember the 620,000 dead Americans that died the war for goodness sakes. 50,000 southern civilians died in that war, and those memorials were put up to remember them. The spike in the 50s and 60s was because of the 100 year anniversary of the civil war.
Beyond Lorien Making memorials for guys who said “slavery is a political evil in every country.” - Robert E Lee “I will never raise my sword against Virginia.” - Robert E Lee “African Americans deserve the right to vote.” Confederate colonel Ford “White soldiers should solute black soldiers.” - Confederate Major Castleman ““Let us stand together. We may differ in color, but not in sentiment. Many things have been said about me which are wrong, and which white and black persons here, who stood by me through the war, can contradict.” - Nathan Bedford Forrest Is the opposite of racism
LadyE100 The fact is Robert E Lee was a Unionist. Robert E Lee reenlisted in the U.S military to fight the confederacy, but when Virginia voted to leave, Robert E Lee was made a General in the Confederacy. Robert E Lee was in fact a gentleman. Son of a revolutionary war hero, Graduate of West Point, Mexican American war hero, hero of Harpers Ferry, defender of Virginia, and president of a university.
When it comes to statues of Confederate soldiers, here's my take: no country officially recognized Confederate independence (Britain, France, etc., officially said they were neutral on the matter, recognizing open rebellion and two belligerents fighting each other, but not independence by any measure; if they had recognized independence, the Trent Affair wouldn't have happened). Because of that, the Confederacy was never actually a country, just a few renegade states. Thus, every Confederate soldier, whether a volunteer or conscripted, took up arms against his own country. Traitors, every last one of them. *NOT ONE* of them should be honored in a public place. If a collector wants the statue for his/her collection, go on and take it. If it's for a museum about the Confederacy, help yourself. If it's somebody wishing to maintain his/her family history, keep the thing. But none should be in a public setting; we don't have statues of Benedict Arnold for that reason. Sorry if you don't like my take, but don't expect to dissuade me.
RareTBoneWithOnions as a person living in Tennessee I see a lot of confederate flags around. I never understood that because to me it was like saying "I openly support traitorous acts of rebellion and slavery."
This has been my exact point for years. I once saw a man in Texas wearing a "I support the troops" t-shirt and a hat with the confederate flag on it. He got so upset when I asked him what troops he was supporting.
Thana Edwards What you just wrote is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. Everyone who reads this is now dumber for having seen it.
Okay so this popped into my head the other day. I have no idea if this has happened at any point, and it's more of a 'what if' but it's something that kinda put these statues in a whole new light for me. I already knew they were wrong, and I never was really okay with them being around, but I guess this is something that gave me a whole new way of seeing just how wrong they are. So I was thinking: What if a father is walking his very young son by one of these statues, and the kid is black. (Dad can be white or black, doesn't matter) and the kid asks who the statue is. "Well son, that's Robert E. Lee" and then the kid asks "What is he famous for?" At this point the dad would probably be trying to avoid the subject "Oh, well he was a general in the civil war..." maybe the conversation ends there, or maybe the kid is especially curious, as some kids are, and just starts asking questions "What was the civil war?" "Was he one of the good guys?" or any other question that leads the dad to having to explain racism to the kid. The kid eventually finds out what Robert E. Lee fought for and asks the question "Then why do we have a statue of him?" I know this is by no means a groundbreaking thought, and one that I could have come across much sooner if I had put enough thought into the matter to get there sooner, but still... anyone white, black, hispanic, straight, gay, male female... how do you look that little kid in the eyes and tell him why America intentionally built a monument to a man (Who wouldn't have even wanted it) who would have fought to keep that kid in chains. I dunno... I just can't imagine what I would do in those shoes.
@@graysonwalker Yep, imagine the White life long racist walking by teaching his son or daughter the same thing his Parents and Grandparents taught him. Show me anyone under six years old that is a racist....
here's how we remember the civil war history: tear down all the confederates monuments and replace them with monuments to the people that beat the traitors? how about we replace them with statues and monuments of the slaves?
Conservatives to liberals who criticize Trump: He won, get over it! Also conservatives: Let's honour confederate soldiers who lost a war 150 years ago!
He won, and most are cool with that fact from the very beginning (not happy, but cool). So that's not the problem. It is what he is, and has been, doing ever since that folks object to. It's the fact that he is not for our country, our laws, our institutions, our morals (yes, I know evangelical christians are ok with his morals; but many of the rest of us object to DJT doing things we teach even children is the wrong choice)... that we object. Heck DJT is not the problem so much, it's his behaviour, his heart, who he is and what he stands for- the systems he represents-- that people object to, and do not want. To kill, steal, and or destroy is not honor worthy behavior; it is not sustainable, or supportable. This behavior, and the person exemplifying it .... that we cannot countenance. And the majority of Americans... the popular vote, and beyond.... well, they resist
+Get Rekt Oh the irony! And just because some fool "won" some shitty election, it doesn't make him my superior and that I can't criticize him. Fucking degenerate Trumpanzee should rot.
the thing is. muricans loves putting statues and/ or honoring people no matter what they did. we got neo nazis. we got kkk. we got robert lee statues. we got custer statue/ memorial/ state park even. imagine if germans put a hitler statue somewhere and call it a piece of culture
We've gotten rid of the pledge of allegiance in schools & prayer @public school & merry Christmas, now we can only say Happy Holidays..the US is slowly changing... Dearborn Michigan plays the Muslim call to prayer through entire town.... diversity is improving
I ve learned today Mike Pence nick name is Micky...I have never thought that we will be ruled one day by *Donald & Micky* loool I bet Walt Disney is very proud right now :))
J Lynn The former german secretary of defense Guttenberg talked about it today in a interview :) He lives in America and he is workin for a German/American Thinktank.
The Confederate States were another country, in a nutshell. Keeping statues and flags of their country is a show of their ideals and the fact you don't want to be a part of the Union. If you want to preserve history, put the statues in a museum and write about it.
I was just playing in the park earlier across the street from the daily show studio and I was saw the line and I was like wow one day I need to get tickets and come see this live 🙌
jeangilles38 The Confederacy was extremely diverse. Thousands of blacks fought for the Confederacy like black Confederate sailor W. S Lewis from CSS Alabama, Cuban Woman Loretta Velasquez dressed as a man to fight for the Confederacy, Cherokee and Choctaw tribes fought for the Confederacy. The last Confederate General to stop fighting was Cherokee General Stand Watie. 10,000 Jews fought for the Confederacy, like Moses Ezekiel. 13,000 Hispanics and 3,000 Mexican-Texans fought for the Confederacy as well, like Santos Benavides.
The change from Stewart to Noah was really great, not because Stewart in anyway was doing a poor job, but because of the perspective and authority Noah brings in the issues dominating today's divided America. He's really grown into the role and is doing a brilliant job. Great show!
The thing about " Remembering the War" and " Our Culture" is General Lee was against the erection of memorials to the war. He felt it would hold reunification efforts back and in alot of ways he was right

Noahdaceo adblocker has been shown to sell itself to ads' companies. There are several people that have the same problem, as did I. Now I have another one, though I can't remember the name, google it!
*"Slavery is a trauma that black people until this day are still dealing with"* ... VERY VERY VERY VERY WELL SAID!!! This is what white folks don't get it!!! BTW I loved this video!!! ❤ They ended it, but until this day we are not treated as equal, as human beings, as good as anybody else!!! There's always the hair, the skin, the way we talk, the way we behave, there's always something that they don't like about us, and we are the ones who have to change, it's ridiculous!! And some people use a lot of chemical products just to fit in, chemicals on their hair, on their skin to make less dark, and etc, it's horrendously ridiculous!!! So, it's not a matter of competence, it's not a matter of being good, because as long as a stupid blonde gets the job, racism and slavery will always live!!!
If they want to remember history, I don't see why we can't take down the statues and put up some memorials remembering the people who lived their lives in slavery, and the people who fought to take down slavery. There you go, remembering history while not celebrating racist historical figures.
In what locals are calling an "unfortunate oversight" three Confederate statues in a small town in Mississippi were removed and replaced with statues of Michael Richards, David Duke, and Ed Norton's character from American History X.
I wish we could do what Russia did with the communist statues but in more local areas, in city museums where they discuss historical figures in context and talk about the artistic value (like when it was put up, when it was taken down, why and how it was made for outdoor public viewing) and present the statues as tools to show racial discrimination in our countries history. I do think the glorification of direct racist actions of the past shown in a public setting is wrong but we can't forget it happened, we need context.
+Becky Mason Well that's part of the problem. all these people saying the statues/monuments aren't about racism, slavery, ,etc... steadfastly refuse to acknowledge the fact that the desire to keep black people enslaved was the central & sole reason for secession & the civil war. They universally revert back to it was a "states' rights" issue as if everyone doesn't know that the "right" they were referring to was the right to keep black people as slaves. I mean if you didn't know what the cause of the secession & civil war was & had to only use the information you could gleam from the Civil War memorials, monuments, statues, etc.. in the former Confederate states you would barely have any idea that black people had anything at all to f-cking do with the whole thing, & no idea whatsoever that the desire to keep them as slaves to white people was the entire purpose of the whole thing. It isn't even as though they simply downplay the whole thing, for the most part they outright deny the facts. Many school textbooks in southern states either obscure or outright hide the fact the secession & Civil War was about slavery.
Aaron Hoy Exactly putting the statues in context would not only give the chance to educate these people but kinda force them to acknowledge racism, and at least the statues aren't being destroyed , it a solution not for the white supremacists but for the historians with some valid concerns, there was a lot of sub causes to the war but they ultimately go back to slavery.

I wish everyone knew that the Confederacy was extremely diverse. African Americans, Hispanics, Latinos, Irish, Jews, Native Americans, French Algerians, and Cubans fought for the Confederacy. Like Stand Watie, Loretta Velasquez, Santos Benavides, Moses Ezekiel, Marlboro Jones, and W.S Lewis.
RonPaulHatesBlacks You know unfortunately Lincoln was pretty racist too. There were a lot of bad things going on in the world back then. That’s why it’s important not to be hypocritical.
Oh my goodness, that Frederick Douglass one made me laugh out loud!!! Leave the sports guys out of it, they're just "well paid" slaves, still bought and sold.
Point of fact. Robert Edward Lee served in the US Army for 32 years prior to the start of the civil war. He was offered command of the Union army, but refused because he saw himself in that moment as a Virginian first. Where are the statues of Robert E. Lee the US Army engineer, Veteran of the battle of Fort Chapultepec?
CAP198462 Consigned to the scrapheap of history, because he chose an ignoble cause to support. Benedict Arnold was an important American Patriot, until he changed sides.
When his state joined the Confederacy he either had a chance to take general of the union army and march troops against his own family, community, and state; or fight for his homeland. You have to remember that it was a different time, we did not see ourselves as one singular country that had many states but as a alliance of many states. Back then it was more like the EU. People would think like their own state was their country and the union was kind of like a foreign invader so the confederates saw themselves as patriots not traitors.
I enrolled on this Pre-Civil War American History class when I was in a hurry, I didn't even read the name of the class. I just needed a block to take. SMH... As the only black guy in that class, I regret doing it. 90% of the time I am just raging on the inside but I can't show it.
Haagen Sweetie in the 70s I was the only history major at my college who was black. After 5 history classes about American history/world history from an American point of view, and listening to white men report like it was all gospel truth? No black professors in the history program? My advisor as racist as they come? That school has never gotten a penny of alumni support from me.
Why? Because they aren't reporting all the false history put out by the black power bean-pie people? Newsflash: Dick Gregory and Prof. Griff are insane - well, one of them WAS insane. They aren't well and their stories are all hearsay or just crazy made up jibberish.
Adding black history statues is exactly what a Charleston SC woman was saying a couple weeks ago. They never take anything down in Charleston; any building over 75 years old is automatically historical. But yet the confederate statues might come down. She was pleading to maybe, instead, put up more statues right next to the confederate ones, that showed the other side of history. ...I don't think she intended right on top of the confederate statues, but that's an interesting way to do it...
Did you know that 90% of all of human history is completely forgotten, do you know why? *Because statues are the only way to preserve history* I seriously don't understand how "erasing history" by removing a statue as a logical reason.
When it comes to the confederate statues if they were built during the Jim Crow laws I don't care what happens to them if they were built during or a fees after the civil war the statues should be kept for historical reasons
mredser76 There is a difference between actual historical monuments and statues of historical figures... You could make a better case for preserving his grave or the house in which he was born than for an irrelevant statue someone decided to put up to honor him...
I know that I am "liberated" but I still learn every time I hear Roy Wood Junior talk about race. It is possible Roy Wood Junior is ruining a career as a comedian because his commentary it is so true that's a humor gets almost lost, Do not stop, Roy, I have more yet to learn !
"You only know Robert E. Lee because he fought to keep slavery". I'm not American yet I know this: Robert E. Lee was seen as the best general of his era, Abraham Lincoln wanted to name him at the head of the army. He was admired by Churchill and Eisenhower who had his picture in the oval office. He said this: "In this enlightened age, there are few I believe, but what will acknowledge, that slavery as an institution, is a moral & political evil in any Country." And this: "So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interests of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this, as regards Virginia especially, that I would cheerfully have lost all I have lost by the war, and have suffered all I have suffered, to have this object attained." A one hit wonder, really? Quite petty and shameful on your part, daily show, to distort truth / history lie that. It only show the real goal of all this movement: erase the past, think in black or white and do not ask questions. History is subtle, unlike your show.
Can we just put them in a civil war museum? "Here's this and this general. Here's the bad shit they did. They fought here and here". They'd be in the right context there. And that way they're out of your sight, unless you're curious and want to go look at them. And you can also add the history of the statues themselves, like: "This was made during WW1 for these and these reasons". Wouldn't that make everybody happy?
Thank You Gentlemen. Take them down. End Racism. WE CAN DO IT. So many of us DO actually want to see Martin Luther's Dream come to fruition. Keep fighting the good fight, there are so many with you, all members of the Human Family, wishing to express peace and love. My heart breaks when people cannot see the pain inflicted on others due to insensitive things like this. It is so obvious and simple. So much love from NYC!!
Thank y’all for explaining it without alienating those who never really thought about the issues thoroughly or fairly before. ( even though they should reflect on that fact some day haha) . And in a lighthearted manner. You guys always BRING IT! This is why youre my favourite. I tell young ones to just watch this show if they do nothing else to stay currently informed.
I like how that guy thought Confederate statues are equivalent to MLK Jr. The people fighting for slavery and they guy fighting for equality are totally the same. /S
MLK would be proud today, he had hoped black Americans will overcome with numbers & they are catching up fast, when the US is 51 percent black, then we'll see real change
I'm a liberal Jew and I grew up around these statues. No matter what side they were on, I look up to the generals such as Robert E. Lee who defended their families and their land. Robert E. Lee was a playwright and a philosopher outside of the war, and didn't even agree with southern ideology.
If any one would like some good news in Baltimore the other week we had our confederate statues taken down and no one freaked out we just went about our day. High five
When people say those statues are a part of "culture," I think for some it's simply because the ITEM ITSELF is an object of High Culture: it is a Statue. ~ I would not be surprised if many statue-defenders did not actually know whom or what event an offending statue was intended to depict. The fact is, the people know and like having a statue there. Replacing it with a better statue- one which speaks to something nobler in us- should be a solution we can all get behind.
In germany there are war monumenst that are intesionaly sinking into the ground, i think this is briliant because the monument remebers those who fought and died fighting the nazi's and germany hopes that when the entirity of the statue is sunken the world will have forgiven germany. Erasing the past a litle is fine if you do learn from it, wich the germans defenitly did: there is no extreme right popular polititian in germany because all it takes is one dude who compares him to hitler and his career is done.
And you think that is a good thing? I don't think it is good to ruin a man's career with one word. The fact is that Germany has been forced into it's position. It has been humiliated by the UN and NATO - just like it was humiliated after WWI. Germany isn't the way it is because that is it's nature. It is the way it is because it still has a globalist boot on its neck.
It is part of history they belong in a museum for everyone to see not destroyed. Let's leave a better world for our children. Love, Peace and Understanding!
The largest Monument to the Civil War, which also includes The Robert E. Lee Memorial, that comes to my mind is evidence that the Statue debate is a Trojan Horse for Racism. The Robert E. Lee Memorial will never be demolished as long as the United States stands, that is how important the Monument it belongs to is to the History of the United States. A Monument that was constructed at the very conclusion of the Civil War, with the purpose of ensuring that America will never forget, and after deep consideration as to where this Monument will be located... middle finger and all. This, it is also prime example of the fact all Monuments are designed with specific messages behind them. We will not see Robert's house being torn down as the message surrounding Arlington National Cemetery is very different to the one around the Statues in question. I recommend people reading this comment, who talk to those defending the Statues, try the experiment themselves: Ask them if they know where the Robert E. Lee Memorial is....
Honestly, my answer is that just move the statues to a museum. That way you can see them and have that "History", but they also aren't just looking down on everyone who walks by.
for every one Confederate statue there should be statues of Union soldiers and renowned black leaders like Martin Delaney, Harriet Tubman, Fredrick Douglass and Booker T Washington They should be in prominent positions in Southern cities, with the statues being even taller than the Confederate ones
Wanna remember what happened during the Civil War? How about pay better attention in History class next time and check out a Civil war book from the local library. Put up a statue and a lot of people are going to freak the fuck out.
I simply do not understand the argument of heritage in regards to these statues. Where else in American history do we celebrate the side that lost? Where else in American history do we celebrate people that wanted nothing to with America to the point they were willing to kill Americans and go to war to make their point? Put them in a museum with a plaque as an example of our national embarrassment and shame. Like in germany where it is illegal to display a swastika in public. Being honest about past shame brings healing. Plus i am very in support of reparations.
Was raised in Colorado and moved to Georgia for college. Racism is so overt down there on both sides I couldn't beleive it. I'd never been around people of my own skin color openly saying the "n" word (I'm a white looking Mexican dude). And I had never experienced racism until I got it from the black people that live down there. The South is a fucked up place to this day, you can feel that hate in the air like the humidity on a hot summers day. Not saying everyone down there is racist or prejudiced but an overwhelming majority of people on both sides are.
I have the optimistic impression that many, not all, southern conservatives/confederate sympathizers, have genuinely a non-racist feeling about the confederate symbols and even "ideals", but under a "revisionistic" version that sincerely believes (even if wrongly) that it was all about states' rights, not slavery. Some use this revisionism to gather sympathizers, but that ends up attracting some who just fall for the non-racist/pro-slavery account, which is something that more naturally triggers a regional pride.
Robert E lee was originally meant to be the Union General, then his home state join the confederates. He didn't want to fight for slavery he just didn't want to fight against his family and state.
That fact really proves nothing. I am not on one side or the other, but historians debate on whether or not Gen. Lee supported or disapproved of slavery.
Lee was a slavery apologist, or at least never spoke out against it. You see people posting the myth that he never owned slaves, yet in reality he controlled nearly 200 slaves at his estate and missed the deadline for releasing them. Lee paid to have runaways captured and whipped. One captured fugitive, Wesley Norris, described being stripped to the waist and given 50 lashes. "Lay it on well," Lee told the constable who delivered the punishment. Disapproved of slavery? Yeah right!
It is up for historical debate, I can clearly see both sides of the argument. My personal opinion is that the statues should be kept up as a reminder. I am not ignorant enough to believe that the other side of this issue also has valid points to take down Confederate statues. I do think that it is impossible to judge the actions of the people in the past to current standards. I do however, strongly believe that the true reasons of the white nationalists are despicable beyond measure and I am not making a statement on their behalf.
Supposedly, when someone asked Robert E Lee what should be done with the confederate flag after the war, he said "Fold it up and put it away." This has never been proven, but is in harmony with his personal views.
Probably so...union took his estate & made Arlington cemetery, he had no where to go...later his heir won a lawsuit against the US & was paid for the estate..
