As a Civil War history nerd/buff (you decide), I can proudly and confidently say that you nailed your explanations. 10/10 Edit: Holy crap thanks for the likes guys!!
@thunderfoot11

But to piggyback this - the civil war era troops used rifles almost exclusively, but they were very early rifles, they still were barrel loaded (with the exception of cavalry carbines which were in essence modern cartridge based breech loaders.) and while they didn't pour powder into pans, the "cartridge cases" they used were paper, filled with shot and powder, which were ripped open dumped in the end and then rammed home with a ramrod. And while it was called a minnie-ball, most but not all, of the rounds were actually a scooped lozenge shape, like very fat, semi hollow versions of modern bullets. What separated them from musket balls, is that like modern bullets they were designed to deform on impact. Musket balls (although some did) were not inherently designed to do so. Also, the Confederacy were still using bronze cannons; in some instance right up to the end of the war, even on their ships.

@@lemonator8813 What it was with rifled artillery guns of the period is that rifeld guns had the range and accuracy but did not have or showed not to be relaible with anti-infantry shells, like shrapnel or timed explosive shells. Rifled guns were mostly used in siege warfare like Gettysburgh and smothbore were preferred as fieldguns especially as they could be used to shoot canister more reliable. So that one reason why you would not find them as frequent in the American Civil War. The other reasons is ofcourse that the were relative new weapons and only the North had the producers and the capacity to produce them and the Napoleons were in large numbers and were also more "easier" to produce (=more producer).
@egbertpopken5580
@egbertpopken5580 5 лет назад
@@thunderfoot11 The bronze cannons are actually not so bad as you might think. Bronze is the perfect material for cannons, at least before 1870, as it is strong yet also elastic and its characterics were beneficial for accuracy (you could load more powder and also bigger projectiles than in iron cannons). It out classed iron or iron-cast guns and was only rivaled by steel-cast canons that started appear in the period and which were relative rare and hight-tech weaponry. The reason why bronze was not so common for guns by the mid 19th century is that it was tremendous more expansive than iron and here the economy of war took its toll. 10 guns in the field is better than one, especially if you could replace a gun cheaper if one was lost.

During the American Civil war percussion cap rifles where used . The Henry Repeater did start making it's way into the ranks but most rifles where muskets with percussion caps. The percussion cap was the first step towards the modern cartage used in firearms today.

The American Civil War was a huge transitional period for weapons technology. Magazine fed weapons as we think of them today weren't really a thing, but tubular magazine fed, lever operated weapons such as the Henry and and Spencer rifles were used in some capacity. Rifled muskets were just about standard and weapons such as the Sharps rifle (which used a metallic cartridge, maybe paper) were, in the right hands capable of accurate fire at over 500 meters. We also saw use of the first telescopic sights. A really interesting and exciting period for weapons technology.

From my understanding, the union had total naval supremacy over the confederacy during the war. Maybe the next battle could be a union counter attack with ship to ship? Also a union naval invasion would make more sense. Maybe against a proper fort or town in Florida, Mississippi, Alabama ect. River battles along the Mississippi would be very appropriate

@Shamus Kimmons @@williamlydon2554 Not exactly, the CSS Virginia (aka the USS Merrimack) was a wooden hulled steamer that the Confederates raised after the US Navy scuttled her, and fitted with an iron skirting and a large iron ram. The USS Monitor was in production and under way to the blockade of Hampton Roads well before the hostilities ensued. The Virginia was thought to be the one hope of the Confederates to break the blockade and on the 8th of March, 1862 it assaulted the Union blockade wrecking havoc and destroying several conventional wooden hulled ships. On the following day the Monitor arrived on station and the ONLY battle of the ironclads ensued. The battle was claimed a victory by both sides because at some point both ships left the field of battle (first the Monitor (due to their only pilot being temporarily blinded) which is why the Confederates claimed victory and when it turned to re-engage the Virginia was already leaving harbor which is why the Union claimed victory). Technically it was a single engagement that carried over two days. So no, they were only ever in one battle each, the Virginia was just in it longer. The postured several more times thereafter but never engaged again. The Virginia was scuttled when Hampton Roads was abandoned and her draft left her unable to float up the James river (May 9th). The Monitor sank at sea while being towed to a blockade and became swamped by sea water in a squall. She went down with 16 hands on December 31, 1862. Hope this helps.

Hey diplex! I’m sure you know this but just in case you don’t I’ll tell you. The small voyage across the Delaware painting was a fictional representation of what happened (not completely). George Washington was ducked lower in the boat (instead of standing) because of the consideration of stealth on the flank. George Washington in the painting was standing to represent his braveness and the factor of being a great leader.

Do you think you were the only one who donated? Climb off the high horse. I've been combining the wishes of donators with my own ideas for months. I've asked you in a previous video what your name was and what battle you wished for, so that I can prioritize it since you're so impatient. Remember, you're far from the only one with a wish, and some people donated several hundreds of dollars. I have to line it up somehow, I can't do everything at once. So please, email me at simon@diplexheated.com with your real name and wish, and I'll do my best to work on it as soon as possible.

@@alvarohernani6645 If you aren´t familiar with the Great Northern War: In the beginning of 1700 a alliance between Denmark-Norway, Saxon-Poland and the Tsardom of Russia was created in order to capture territory from the new swedish teenage king, Charles XII or Carolus Rex as he also was called. The king proved the alliance wrong by striking out Denmark-Norway from the war early on and after that forced Poland-Lithuania out of the war aswell to where only russia stood alone. The kings ambitions went too far and he invaded russia with the hopes of fighting the Tsar in Moscow. Holowczyn, July 1708, where the 12000 men strong swedish empire under the command of fieldmarshal Rhenskiöld and the king Charles XII fought against the overwhelming force of 40000 men strong tsardom of Russia led by fieldmarshal Sjerementev and general Repnin , I think. Anyhow, the swedes lost about 300 men whereas the russians lost between 2000-5000 men. There are different sources that will tell you different numbers but around that amount of casualties. A strategical victory for the carolean army. Poltava, a crushing defeat for the swedish army and a turningpoint in the war. June 1709. The swedish army was exhausted because of the russians "scorched earth" tactics (basically burning all the land to the point where no food can be found). No food and the russian winter left the swedes demolished and at the battle of Poltava, the swedish king couldn´t participate because he´d been wounded so the command was left for the generals and marhsals. Sweden had a force of 16000 men led by fieldmarshal Rhenskiöld and general Lewenhaupt against the russian force of 42000 men led by the russian Tsar himself, Peter the Great. About 7000 swedes were killed and the rest fled the battlefield with the king to ottoman turkey. The russians lost 1000 men. It was an end for the swedish empire.

At least in the videos I happen to see. On another note, you are thinking of Fort Wagner, but maybe a better example would be Malvern Hill or the first day of Shiloh in terms of Confederate phyrric victory in the attack.
