It all comes down to whether or not you feel Fletch is there. And you do. Jon Hamm does an excellent job at bringing Fletch back to life. The story wasn't all that much but it doesn't matter, cause it's all about Fletch.
I have been doing Contessa impressions all week! Adored this more than I thought I could. Fletch was one of those culty film bro movies to me (although I did enjoy the first film back in the day) and I love that they went back to the books and came in with a fresh take. Watch it multiple times and I’m impressed with how tight the story is! Also worth noting my father was a book reader and loved it too. Gotta let go of the Chevy Chase version, guys…
John Slattery and Gene Amoroso 'reprise' their roles as Boston Globe journalists from Spotlight. I thought it was curious that Gene Amoroso shows up very briefly in both movies as well but I still caught it.
Sadly I have no real nostalgia for the original Confess, Fletch films, but it finally came to Canadian Netflix and I really enjoyed this one, was great getting to see Hamm doing a more upbeat role, after Corner Office.. Have been in a bit of a winter slump, but had a huge smile, when Robert Picardo arrived, was a delightful surprise.
@@BreakfastAllDay Hello from Canada! And It's always a joy, to see when you two have videos up, for lesser reviewed films, will have to get a hold of the original Fletch movies, and make an evening of it.
I remember enjoying the 2nd Fletch film with Chevy Chase as much as the first one - I just love the dry riffs, I suppose. Can't wait to watch this ASAP. I'm already excited to see Marcia Gay Harden in a film. Seems like a role Hamm could own too. Great review!
I liked this movie so much that I’ve rewatched it 3-4 times , watched the Chevy Chase flick for the first time and working my way through all of the books. Such a great character.
I have finally watched this and agree with most of what you 2 had to say. The first 30 minutes had me worried but they definitely all got into a groove. Grizz is my mvp. 7.1
Every time I missed fletch, I bought another novel. I have several copies of each that have their own stories of the flea markets and used bookstores and thrift stores I found them in. Great reads, I always thought fletch could be like James bond, w different eras and actors playing them. I too was apprehensive of seeing this movie because of the force awakens been so long for anything. But the actors, director, and editor made good choices about unveiling who knew what when. And like the best con movies, the plot started years before the protagonists "ca ll to action." Hope they put this to dvd/ blu ray for all the juicy extra and not extinguish our dying physical media!
I’m a big fan of the first two films and always quote them any chance I get. I wasn’t sure whether to see this one after watching the trailer. I’m also surprised there’s little advertising. I only found out about this movie by seeing one article on FB. Anyway, I’ve been following you all for a long time and trust your judgement. So, I’m going to go see it!
Love Jon Hamm and Fletch - but not enough to rent it for $20. And since it's not playing at my multiplex, do we know it's going to end up on Paramount+ and when?
This movie was so much fun. Hamm has always been hilarious when he's had the chance to be funny, which isn't often, so seeing him lead this was great. I'd never even heard of the Fletch character, but I'm going to check out some novels and watch the original now. Him wearing the Lakers cap in Boston, every scene with Griz/Roy Wood Jr/MGH/Slattery, not wearing shoes, etc...I was laughing constantly. I really hope they make more of these, I trust Mottola and Hamm in this Fletch world. Five stars, five stars, five stars, this review gets five stars 😂😭.
I really enjoyed this!! Sad it got kind of canned by the marketing. I actually thought the mystery was pretty well done. While the solution to the whodunnit was pretty straightforward, the other details involving the art theft were surprising. I saw both the original Chase movies a while ago but I think this is the first one that actually lets Fletch be a few steps ahead of the audience and makes us wait for those final revelations. Lucy Punch's scene had me laughing out loud. It bespoke to me.
Just got back from seeing it. Missed 3-5 minutes but overall I’d give it a 7/10. Was telling Alonso this on twitter but summer 2023 I wanna go through all the books.
Why on earth is a dramatist in a comedian's role?? Jon Hamm did an absolutely awful job of delivering lines that Chevy Chase - or any comedian - would've murdered. It was like watching a stand-in simply recite lines. I don't get it. I remember so many lines from the original. There was nothing memorable about this performance. A comedy requires a comedic actor to deliver comedic lines in a funny way. Jon delivered none of that. None. His performance was not even close to the original whit and charm of Chevy Chase's. He did nothing to embody even an ounce of the spirit of the character. He might have been center screen, but he faded into the background of even scene. Never hire a dramatist to do a comedian's job. What an epic letdown. How disappointing. So disappointing that I absolutely had to make an account just so I could try my best to save other cult Fletch fans from this disaster. I'll never watch another one of these ever again.
I've read the Fletch novels, as well as the Flynn novels ("Confess. Fletch" was mostly to introduce the Flynn series). I wouldn't say any of the characters are multi-dimensional, even Fletch. He drinks with the men, sleeps with the women, and we learn little else about either group. Pretty standard 70s light reading.
