I went to university in China for a year, then worked there for 6 years. This guy is very brave to speak openly like this. Even though he is now in the UK, guaranteed the Chinese embassy in London know about him and I would bet, been given warnings and threats.
What so brave when he could have been the citizen there or an American. What so holy and democratic are the west ? They never stand up for Assange as the US also wants him dead for publishing news that were negative on them. Only the US government can do an Assange job but not China in your eyes.

It is exactly like what the video says and the most amazing part is that he lived in Honkong and still grasped all of the details, the correctness is absolutely amazing
Dude, Chinese $ abroad is 100% visible in SE Asia. Go to Laos, Cambodia... heck, all over, but it's just there, and people often making what would be silly investments elsewhere, but they just want to park their cash and are almost (or basically) desperate to find some place to put it all.
I am a professional painter in Copenhagen. I did work for like 3 years on a 7-year-long project where the main investors were Chinese nationals. Regularly we would see a group of them walking around...
I knew someone that worked in China who stated the Han Chinese communist population could not tell or care about the difference between right and wrong.
@ZEN NOW….. that someone is correct. People who know n care about diff: between right n wrong can hardly survive under CCP Chinese kind of gov: for long. ( Most population suffer twisted mental illness without realizing. ) It’ll take years to untangle twisted mental illness for some people. I can see flaws in democratic countries but they are better than CCP China’s kind of oppress gov:’s countries. Living as prisoners ( they have to answer “. All is well “ to their authority every day. ) or hostages under oppress gov: people can say their gov:s are good n they are fine. They are not allow to criticize their own gov:. They wouldn’t dare to criticize their own gov:. So they became brainless bots. Pity. I came from a country which copy corrupt CCP Chinese’ every dirty trick, lies n oppression. USA is my adopted country. USA is not perfect but I appreciate it very much. I don’t have to twist my emotion n lie myself or for others or discard my dignity. I can be myself. I can think , speak n act honestly. What a freedom it is? In God we trust are printed on dollars. God bless America. God save n protect America from all evils n dangers.🙏❤️🙏
@@rachelbaziak4159 Nope. The basis for wrong actions are totally different in America and China. In America, people know its wrong and yet chose to do it. In China, its simply "market practice" and there are no religious / moral compass for them to rationalize their actions.

Thanks for your eagerness to point it out. Pretty sure there is corruption anywhere where humans gather. This video is about talking about China’s corrupt style. We can’t talk about everything in this one video.
IT is always the same, when a company became profitable, some government - local, municipal, provincial, central governments would come and grab it. Yet, the consequence is mostly always the same - the company went out of business. My father managed a joint venture among a farm from Guangzhou and some Hong Kong companies, and a Japanese company back in late 80s and mid 90s.The company was very successful its products were well received in Guangzhou and in southern China, then here came the city government and took it over. And yes, they took my father's passport too.
The interviewer in the beginning confused traditional Chinese culture with what happened during the 1960s (Cultural Revolution). Teachers are respected and well paid under the Imperial Confucian order. The Cultural Revolution specifically targeted the Imperial Confucian order.
I was 6 years old in 1989- I was never told about the story until i spontaneously talked to an Australian when I was traveling in Indonesia when I was 31 years old.
The tip thing that parents pay happens in most Asian schools. Not just in china. Happens in Cambodia and other places also. Some teachers are assholes too expecting too much from each student on a regular basis.
I love this episode, but it would be good with a clearer timeline. I'm just curious about his relationship with the CCP pre-Hong Kong-handover and post-Hong Kong-handover. His parents took him to British Hong Kong, but after 1997, the same region was in Chinese hands.
"In May 1993, Desmond went back to Hong Kong right after finishing his double major in finance and accounting in the United States." I wonder if he lived at Lothlorien Co-op briefly? We had a Chinese exchange student there for a semester - looks like Desmond kind of - and was at the same time in Madison! hahaha.
Just incredible. Great interview. Gives you a rare insight on how the CCP is run. Amazing single minded organization in managing it's affairs and taking its place in this world. Then the US and the west must be ever vigilant in protecting their freedom. I wanted to visit China one day but there is now the thought at the back of your mind that something might go wrong and I might be stuck there for a looonng time.
1:07:00 -- The USA is not the only country kidnapping or "rendering" people from one country to another. Paul, the innkeeper from the "Hotel Rwanda" story, also was stolen when he left Belgium to go to some human rights conference. Many more countries are probably capable of this, even if you are NOT POLITICAL.
700 square feet is 65.032 square meter. Seven hundred square feet covers one-fourth of a standard tennis court. If it were a single room, it would measure about 26 by 27 feet.
Loving all these podcasts... I used to watch laowhy but thought they were being to critical towards china when racial tensions were high with covid. I hated seeing all the Asian attacks in the west and I thought it could be fuel for that. After this podcast I am thinking this is a bigger problem than I thought and I went back to watching laowhy and serpentza. It's sad what all these people have been through and it's the tip of the iceberg
Thought the same but before I leave something I check it out first then quickly realized these two being one of the first bloggers in China was right. They have alot of connection on the ground. Maybe not CCP but those two have actual connections to so many of the common man due to their motorcycle trips. That's why they know so much on what's happening on the ground and many reach out to them.
What this person says is very similar to what was happening in the USSR in terms of corruption, privilege etc. Like in the days of kings in old Europe Thanks for sharing.
@The Jordan Harbinger Show: (1) On teachers, go back to the satire, "Sunny and Cheerful Kong Yiji". You, Jordan, know enough Mandarin to get and understand the Lu Xun book from before CCP. (2) There is NO difference between the Emperical Dynasties and the CCP. None. Xi is "The last Emperor". He is the cliche of every end to every Chinese empire ... and the tend to end after 70 years.
Desmond you are still young and still a lot more to learn. I am in my late 70 and serve in the Malaysian government and live in many countries. I know what I am talking about. Let me give you a simple advice silent is golden. When you grow older you will see what I mean
Well you're not being very silent mr. James Wong why don't you speak up a little and give us some information. I lived in Malaysia for a year in 1990 and China in 94 and 2001 and boy was I ever glad to get out of China in 94. The day I was going to leave in 1994 They " arrested me" because I look white and I was staying in the Chinese dorm a few days. The government is extremely racist
@@HaHa-fp1zxSilence is golden because you get to listen to what others are saying, thus making it easier to craft precise replies. As well, with silence you keep your enemies guessing. Knowing just when to speak up is key to making a strong impact with your words.

Teachers get lots of pension, however. About 728 USD even in rural areas, while farmers get 17 USD in poor Henan province. Obviously, people in big cites get high pension. Generally, civil servant, high too.
U should know every country and system is complicated. And evolving . As a kid he moved to Hongkong, meaning he really not know too much about China which would qualify him to give you his so called insight , even his family or grandparents may also way outdated…..
5 dollars per month for a third world country is common. Third world countries and economy and reverse inflation for back then and 5 dollars isn't so bad. Considering back then you can buy a mansion in Australia for a couple thousand dollars
He is quite right. You know the chinese are very 含蓄, meaning they say certain things in a very low profile watered down way. Like "Guangxi" the chinese always say u need this to get things done. In short "guangxi" is just knowing someone who can be of help and you can "pay" to get things done. So "Guangxi" then bcoms an intangible assets the society will garner for use when times come.
Did he say $5 dollars US a MONTH???? Is that NOW,,, or did he mean in the 1960's,,, and HOW do you support a household and food and bills???? Good LORD it sounds like true poverty,, and having to get dressed and wear nice professinoal clean clothes.. every day. People in poverty have problems with space and water. see,, NOBODY Knows these things,,,, the general US pubic Needs to know this!
I could tell you similar stories in the US Army. Don't act so shocked about a developing country. Oh... No corruption in US government? Cool interview.
Ya I think all these governments are just insanely corrupt and dysfunctional. Then they’ll get their poor and insane to fight a huge war and kill a bunch of citizens
Desmond Shum became a billionaire during his 8+ years in China(Beijing) for the China airport project and investment opportunity in ping eye insurance, the No.1 insurance company in China. The reason his company got the airport project was because his ex-wife came from the inner cycle of Wen's wife, Wen was the then prime minister of China. In China, Desmond was widely criticized for his quick marriage to his 2 years elder wife, without any overlap in life before, without any common similarity in the background: education, finance, career, and lifestyle, and his immediate second marriage with his 16 years younger secretary after divorce. Through Desmond's ex-wife, he did reach some related high-level Chinese government officials, like an ex-Beijing major who can't avoid when taking the Bejing airport project. And a Beijing major, especially 10+ years ago when there is no formal social regulations or rules about government officials with business man/women, usually won't reject a private dinner invitation, if not feel honored, from relations from China's prime minister, the head of the Chinese government, the big boss😁. And current Chairman of China, Xi, and the First Lady, who was at that time reporting to Wen. Then Desmond sharply and confidently concluded Xi's character is a dynasty emperor (through 1 or 2 dinners?)😁. In China dynasty times, No one, except the empress, can share the same table with the emperor, even in most private situations. Desmond grew up in Hongkong, and according to himself, poor and struggling with his financial situation, even once went shattered in his early days. Hongkong is tinny, and mainland China is huge both in space and in population. It makes sense for him to assume the several high-level officials he met for the construction project in Beijing, may present the typical Chinese "high-level" governments. Construction-related departments in China, do have some common😁, and the biggest criminal high-level official, his ex-wife was closed with, does come from an area where alcohol(53 degrees, at least 40 degrees) is a local dinner habit, including women😁. Unfortunately, most Chinese, men and women, may not be physically qualified to drink alcohol with them, so most of us, don't become billionaires😂. Also about 3 dinners a day for 6 days a week, never heard through I was in Beijing in Desmond's China days. The majority of Chinese people, especially Beijing people used to have light every dinner due to health considerations. Traditional Chinese saying: eat breakfast well(nutritious), eat lunch full, eat dinner light(70%~80% full). Nowadays, for fitness, shape, health, and energy considerations, most working-class China, eat multiple light meals in the daytime and light dinner, mainly for social purposes. The traditional government official's private social rules, used to be: the higher level, the less for social fairness and power limitation purpose. Chinese traditional political culture believes in calm, rational, listening to everyone, independent thinking, effective communication, and practicing. The ability to solitude well, independently think, and community effectively and widely with "qualified" people, is the basic requirement for an independent, fair judge and decision-making. Obviously, Desmond's "high-level" officials are new generations, westernized well 😁
Nope he is still free. As I recently saw him several interviews in Taiwan. In Taiwan, he maintained in Asia he strictly travel only to Japan or Taiwan. He also very fussy the transit flight at which country and which airline to take.

He only needs a couple people to that he can trust and then he can get away with it nobody's going to know nobody's going to figure and figure it out the idea here is to get really rich I mean it seems like you already has a lot of money but maybe that's why it's got a lot of money because he's a really smart clever talented guy
Jordan, you picked the wrong guy to interview, sorry. Or perhaps, you have picked the right who is a perfect choice for your agendas. Only you know your plans. When he said the salary of his parents as teachers in today's context is US$5 exposed his inner thoughts. I wonder how old was he then and when hehe family migrated. Why didn't you ask him, how much chairman Mao, his cabinet, government officials and the people salary were during the same time? This will give a clear understanding to viewers. You probably allowed this to passed deliberately and hoped it will sticks to increase the emotional charges. Wouldn't it be better to let the viewers to decide? FYI during his parents time, many ordinary Chinese are struggling to live. When comparing them to the 1.4 billion populations in China, they are the elites in that poor nation. Now, let us compare the government of USA, a nation of 300 millions demographic. Are they perfect? How many died and suffered by their handling of the Black and Hispanic people due to their political systems and supremacist behaviours. And, how many unwarranted innocents have died due to covid and guns controls policies? As you can see that even to govern 25% populations compared to China 1.4 billion is already a problem to the US government with their systems. How can you not expect China to face problems with 3 times more population than the US? And, the conditions that exist in both countries are completely opposite to another during the time when his parents were employed.. A very rich US and a very poor China with a demographic of 300 million against 1.4 billion. This man did not tell the complete truth of things he said. People act and behave differently within the acceptable frame in accordance with the conditions allowed. These actions will evolve as they progress relatively. From nothing to something and from everything to complacency to nothing. Isn't this what you witnessed on Jimmy Carter's speech on the one China policy that is being destroyed by Trump, Pompei, Pelosi, Mccarthy? These are signs of the closing to the end cycle. 😮
the Chinese are the worst race in the world, and everyone knows it, their slogans, to love the fatherland is to be hypocritical, not very credible with non-Chinese
The truth is too absurd to handle? Let me tell you something, as a Chinese... I don't believe what he said is 100% factual. But the gist of it is quiet realistic.
@@Peter-we7vv "realistic gist" science fiction can also have "Truth to absurd to handle" not really , it is just the one sided, selective and biased fashion shown as "The truth" let me tell you something, as an American who is well aware of what's going on in my country I have quite enough to worry about whatever thing is pushing viciously to make China look as a world threat, I saw a previous video when this guy was interviewing John Perkins, and despite all the anti China narrative John said it is nothing different than what America does as a superpower, and that China is not even as close to match it so there is that, I'm not buying the narrative of "the new worldwide threat to freedom" posed by China and that is what I call BS..
