With the demise of Microsoft Forefront TMG there's been lots of queries out there about what Reverse Proxy you can use for Microsoft Lync (and others). Fortunately there's a free option with Windows IIS Application Request Routing (or ARR).
This video runs through how to configure the reverse proxy rules.

Yeah this works with http but I'm having trouble with SSL as well. Curious how you setup the SSL on the ARR & host servers.

Hi, Great Video !...I have a query ...how the request gets translates from 10.1.1.1 to 192.168.1.100 ...Does ARR does it in background or some NAT needs to be configured at firewall ? apart from this ,Is it possible to configure ARR with single Adapter ?

Yep..I can browse to the VCSA just fine from the ARR box. The VCSA dynamically loads a self-signed certificate during deployment. I'm guessing that I'll either need to retrieve that cert and add it to the certificate that has all of the destination URLs listed in its SAN field, or replace the self-signed cert on the VCSA with a custom one.

I have this setup for Lync right now. Can I also set the same proxy server up for Exchange and use a second public IP address?

Mark, thanks for this, very useful, I have setup the ARR and have an exchange 2010 and a webserver sitting behind it, it all seems to work fine except I am getting a Certificate error, as when accessing owa for example, it is using the certificate on the arr and not my exchange server certificate, am I missing something?

When you configured IIS on the web proxy server, did you setup an SSL certificate and bind port 443?

What settings do you have for the SSL on the two IIS servers? I can get port 80 working no problems, but SSL doesn't work, and google doesn't look promising.

It's the standard Certificate Error, Problem with the website's certificate. Setup is as follows, exchange server on one server with a certificate installed, and then on another server running IIS and a website with a certificate installed. both of these are using 443, and I have a single public IP hence the desire to use a reverse proxy as opposed to changing ports. Is ot my understanding that these certificates should be installed on the ARR server instead?

Do you have any idea what would be required to get ARR to reverse proxy connections to a vCenter Server Appliance? I've setup ARR, but can't seem to get it to connect - keeps throwing an error stating, "The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server." I think it has something to do with the SSL certificate, but I'm not as proficient with IIS as I'd like to be. Cheers.

hi, how can I deal with the default web site when I have 4 host headers for web sites to share through ARR ? site1.mydomain.com for exchange OWA https and owa certificate binding on 443 site2.mydomain.com for lync external access with it's own certificate binding on 443 site3.mydomain my default web site, with it's own certificate and binding on 443 regards, Thiago

Thanks a lot Mark Coughlan in this case I'll need only one certificate with all site's names on it (for exchagne, lync, site_A, site_B , right?

Oh and the ARR has a certificate too, that is what is causing the error when browsing to either site, as it isn't the expected certificate on the other end
