Update today with this new info on what the RMV is doing. They had a meeting today to figure out what they are going to do with the ban and will be releasing information soon.

Okay so let's see how I understand it: 1600lb kei car/truck = a terrible and terrifying death trap. 6500lb F150, 7000lb Cybertruck, 26000lb box truck = Amazing and safe. (one costs 5-15k total to import and the other at least 40-50k to buy) Welcome to the American government when everything perfectly makes sense, as a European tho, I promise you it is as stupid the other way around even if it's a sports car.

Cyberspace is not crash tested and is banned in the EU because it literally has a guillotine for a hood. A part of the reason they are keeping the production numbers low is to get around crash testing it in the US.

Owning a couple JDM imports myself this has me worried that they are going to retroactively ban all short vin's. I believe as the continued push to go electric continues they will attempt to stop all imports.

Same here, I also wanted to use a regular 20x20ft garage to the fullest and get myself a suzuki cappuccino and put a rollcage in it, as well as import a suzuki kei truck and do the same with this vehicle too. I am genuinely scared they're gonna do the same legal bs in Texas where I wanna move into from Poland in just few years! How is this any different from a Geo Metro or a Ford Model T that's it's so unsafe? If anything it protects pedestrians and cyclists from being crushed under thousands if not tens of thousands of pounds of metal like the dumbass 6000+lb vehicles from CAFE exemptions...!

@@ChummiaChanTexas is doing away with vehicle safety inspections this year and emissions is only for 2 to 25 years in certain jurisdictions with the requirements only, the rest don’t have any testing. Which means as long as you don’t say anything to anyone you should be fine getting the vehicle registered for the forceable future.

I live in GA and bought my 1994 Suzuki Carry in 2020. My plan was that if I couldn't register it in GA, I would register it in NC (beaucse they had just passed the law making them legal AND I also own a residence in NC). Turns out that is what I had to do - register it in NC. However, since importing it, I've heard about a 'farm' tag that allows a non-complient vehicle in GA to be driven on GA roads with a radius of 30 miles or so from your 'farm'. My GA residence is on 5 acres and is zoned 'agreculture/residential' (you need a min of 5 acres for thjis class). And I do have 500 squeare feet of my lot dedicated to agriculture. So if MA has such a classification then it may be possible to get a farm plate for it. This year my truck turned 30 years old so I no longer have to have an annual NC safety inspection. I drive the truck in GA with no issues. What other backup plans have you come up with?

I doubt I can do a farm tag thing in my case since I live in the city and I have things other than trucks. Fleeing to another state's registration is the real other option if this doesn't pan out.

Same thing happened in 2009 in Quebec, Canada, but only for RHD. If you you import the same vehicle, but LHD, it's fine. Stupid. Seems like the short VIN of JDM vehicles are causing issues with every registering departments systems in North America and the ALL try to find a way to ban them. Not worth fixing their software and they don't want to put in the manual work it cause, solution? Ban them. This is why ALL their excuses are not making sense.

Wait for this to happen in all states. Even Texas requires a car to meet federal standards for the year of production. Kei cars do not meet several federal standards including crash testing, safety devices, and emissions.

If a car is older than 25 years old you can federally import them through the process and you should be able to register it the state isnt screwing around like this.

We don't know yet. Will have to find out very soon it seems like. There was talk about revoking the ones that slipped by after they decided to start doing this about a month ago.

Course they probably already have plans to go after any Montana LLC registered vehicles they see driving around the state too. Like they did in Georgia (I think) where they were tired of losing out on all that registration tax.

Easy, let us register the cars and they get to continue to collect the registration fees, sales tax, and excise taxes. People in the neighboring states have been registering it here giving MA free money too and they go and cut this off on themselves. 😆

My Suzuki Carry? I drive it hard and I could get about 28mpg with the carb motor. Its in the middle of an upgraded motor swap to go fuel injection and turbo. Dunno if that'll make it better or worse lol

The real questions are who funds the MVAA, and why an old paper they had done (it's been around since when these vehicle really WERE illegal) and who is behind the legislative agenda. I see two possible answers: either the ATV industry, who feels that minis will wipe out their overpriced motorcycle based trucks, or the manufacturers themseles who want to distance themselves from non compliant foreign products. Mazda is a minor player in this market, and Subaru doesn't sell trucks, so Toyota, who is big into trucks, or Honda, which is just BIG *and that also sells ATVs. Find the money, find the answer.

I have about 15 of these vehicles. A Montana LLC reg is quite expensive for what I'm doing considering I'll only keep the stuff I like. All the places that do.the registration stuff want like $1100+ to do one vehicle. Its one thing if I want to keep it long term for a few years but if I don't like it then it's not that viable.

I think this is a bit fear mongering. RMV does not make law. Legislators do. RMV can only do what is mandated. So please. frenzied “facts” aren’t yet truths.

We have confirmation that they are no longer allowing registration of said vehicles. This is not frenzied "facts". We have documented denial of a kei truck and a JDM civic. I don't understand what there is there to deny? People with too much power try to get away with stuff all the time.

@@AnythingWheeled well it looks like I’m eating crow! You were right and I am wrong. My kei truck arrives in two weeks. I guess it will have to be a farm truck. I think in time we can make them appreciate I’m safer in it than on my motorcycle. I’d be fine if they ban them from highways like scooters. If you have an address for me to write to I will. No worries! We all have our own way of looking at it I'm happy you see what we see too. Now there's always talk of registering it elsewhere as needed to be able to continue to use it on the road when the full crackdown is in place. But before we get there, reach out to your state reps and senators and tell them about what they have done to you without warning or due process. See if they can "convince" the RMV to back off and carry on status quo. Thanks!

That's the operator's choice and risk to take. Just like the little three wheel car motorcycle things on the road, regular motorcycles and scooters, the scooters that go recklessly ignoring traffic laws, and old classic cars. I understand that MA also allows golf carts on the road too what's up with that? The update after this one clarifies they're only after the kei trucks and van variants but allow everything else. There are non kei vehicles on their example ban list. This shows they don't even know what a kei is. Even though any import from anywhere older than 25 when it gets here is exempt from FMVSS. They cite not meeting FMVSS for reasoning to ban them off the roads but yet allow everything else imported under the same laws even though those fall in the same category of not meeting FMVSS. This is clearly due to activity of lobbying groups for the golf cart and sxs industry as these trucks and vans are superior to those products at a lesser cost.

Yes safer than the 50cc scooters zooming all over the streets of Boston down one ways or running all the lights. Safer than any motorcycle. (I'm not against those by the way I ride motorcycles myself it's totally more safe than one.) I choose to drive one of these keis and accept my risk of getting squashed like I choose to ride my motorcycle. What about all the full size short vin vehicles they are also banning? The racism part is just a joke. May be true who knows but that's just what people jump to all the time.

I choose to buy and drive them that's the risk I'm taking. I used to own a 65 Mustang too. That thing was a death trap in its own way like many other classic cars but I still wanted it. If I go splat I go splat. No different than on my motorcycle.
