What does R&B Funk Band Confunkshun think about Silk Sonic's remake of Love's Train? What message does ConFunkShun send to Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak? Take a look and find out on this special edition of KAMDI Konversation!
The young Gen Z (corrected from "millenials") who said Bruno is culturally appropriating missed the train (no pun intended). When you have OG artists across every genre of music saying how Bruno is keeping MUSIC relevant, it shows the homage and respect Bruno gives back to those who came before him. Add Anderson in the mix and you also have a throwback artist who reflects the need for heartfelt music that one can only feel in the soul. Yet, Silk Sonic keeps it fresh and innovative with their own expression. Not very many remakes of classics make the cut. This one, as well as the original, are timeless!
I am 22 and have been a fan of Bruno since I was 13. He’s always paid homage and gave credit to black artists. People who say he is culturally appropriating have not done their research. He is not Miley Cyrus.
Great cover and the fact that these brothers enjoyed the remake is amazing. Silk Sonic payed homage to these brothers and reintroduced it to a new generation. Great time to be alive.
This made me smile. The fact the ConFunkShun is giving the nod to the remake it special. I usually don't like remakes, especially of songs that I already love but Silk Sonic gave it just enough Silk Sonic to keep my interest. Now my kids in the car like dad didn't we just listen to this song twice in a row and I'm like Yeah but the first was ConFunkShun, then was Dru Hill, and this is Silk Sonic.
They should be ecstatic that Silk Sonic covered "Loves Train" because Michael and Felton will be receiving fat royalty checks! Well done Silk Sonic 👏 👍 👌 😀
I agree. The original is smooth and heartfelt. Just reaches down to your soul. The remakes by Dru Hill and Silk Sonic are good with a different flavor. Hope that Con Funk Shun keeps it going!
Old School is paying homage to the New School on doing there Song and that's an Honor. Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak are an Amazing DUO, God Bless them in whatever that they attempt to do.😎🎶💯👋❤️🎆
They made a little money off of them using the song. If someone recreates you work and does it with the best if intentions, to include you made a little money off the effort, one does not bash. Also, this is not the first, Dru Hill redid the song also.
Shelia Lucas, I believe you have this backwards. You meant the new school is paying homage to the old school. Silk Sonic covered it very well. This is a 40 year old song and absolutely killed it.
It’s funny!! I love Silksonic!!! Love them!!! Love the Love’s train but it actually made me want to listen to the Confunkshun version even more. I am a Confunkshun fan from the 80’s. Used to listen to 93.7 WBLK and this was my jam!!! A sexy song and Michael’s rich voice is incomparable!!! Silksonic made today’s generation fall in love with Confunkshun!!!
Wow...that was a great interview. I hoped they'd react to Silk Sonic, especially the cover. When I heard Love's Train...I lost my damn mind!! I STILL love ConFunkShun & love Silk Sonic, Anderson & Bruno. Amazing. 😲 Oh $hit! They're gonna listen & react too? OMG. Can you imagine if Silk Sonic & ConFunkShun perform together.
ConFunkShun has been on my Playlist since my early 80's high school times. Cassette tapes, CD's, to Spodify. I've never not had ConFunkShun and specifically Ffun fun is and always has been my jam. Love's Train is so smooth and those horns can melt butter. ❤
I was vacationing with my eight yr old grandson, he was in the bathroom getting dress putting on lotion. He had his phone and was listening to music. I heard him singing Love’s Train and he knew all the words. I said hey what do you know about that. I had to go in and I noticed it was not Con Funchion. I had to find out who that was he was listening to. Silk Sonic was doing there thang. I told my grandson that song is 40 years old. I love music and I will have to introduce more of our music to him. R & B is still alive.
The Original is The Best!!! My older bro bought the album in 1982 in the 10th grade in Cleveland. Was A HUGE Hit in Ohio & Beyond!!! Hey fellas... Nice interview!!!
True story: I remember when I first heard the Lazy Song by Bruno, I didn’t think much of it. But one day my radio alarm went off and it was playing the song. I got out of bed, called into work sick and did absolutely nothing the entire day. That’s when I became a fan, but didn’t become a super mega-fan until “When I was your man”, and have been on Bruno’s train from that on. It’s unbelievable that one man can possess so much talent, and not mediocre in anything he does - singing, dancing, playing multiple instruments, writing music for himself and other artists, producing music and shows, directing videos. He does it all. Love love love Bruno Mars!
In the second verse, when Michael sings 'Sugar, honey, darling, I really wanna see you too." But she said "Someone's over and baby, I really wanna be with you". The other someone was none other than Felton Pilate!
Before I retired I was a professional interviewer, moderator, etc. I must say, Ms. Hawley, you gave a good interview. Great style. You knew when to ask and you knew when to listen. Kudos!!!!!
Love's train sounds like a booty call song. Michael's vocals are so on-point & powerful! Wow, they were involved with the same girl & wrote their personal feelings. I still can't believe it's been 40 years & Silk Sonic got it Right! I hope they kept their rights to the song because they're getting paid from it even more now!
I found this song while listening to Silk Sonic this weekend and this song came up and thought it was a mistake but realize it was Silk Sonic doing there version of the song. Immediately, pulled the original and thought it was as good as the original. I used to listen to ConFunkShun on the Quiet Storm radio show in Alexandria,Va ...great times! Let’s see Silk Sonic and ConFunkShun on tour together. RJ
Confunkshun was the opening act for The Brothers Johnson here in Hawaii. They rocked “Too Tight” and had us all in a frenzy! Bought their albums that night and been fans ever since! Thank you for letting us all witness your journey.
Silk Sonic has mutated into an avalanche of blessings! They have set an impossible bar, and everyone else has been put on notice. It's like the music gods knew a long time ago we were going to need this and planted the seeds that would eventually become Silk Sonic. A better match can't be found! Congratulations and thanks to Con Funk Shun for writing such a timeless classic. I'm so happy this remake has blessed you just like you blessed us with the original 40 years ago.
Yes but none of them have been popular and there haven’t been any popular groups in years . End of the day, nice song, great cover. Glad Silk Sonic has been putting modern takes on a classic sound and now they’ve covered this classic.
Hey Lux, WHAT other Black groups? Other than the OG's, what groups? What bands? Let me answer; they don't exist. Kudos to SilkSonic, H.E.R; true, classic musicians bringing the sound of my youth. I was 21 when the original came out.
@@edwinvicks7426 true. As far groups now, none of them can keep up with Silk Sonic. Like you said, the ogs up to the late 90s could hang. To me, Dru Hill version was better but glad the original artist are getting respect from younger generation
So glad to see that music we grew up with is still in our hearts. Love the Silk sonic version but don't forget the Dru Hill ft Keith Sweat version. That one was amazing too. Much love
Love this interview; so happy that Silk Sonic covered it. You know Confunkshun is happy because the $$$ is coming thru to their bank accounts...Much deserved
Silk Sonic did this song wonderful homage. Love to see OG artists give them props and seeing them enjoy hearing their song through someone else. Very cool
When I heard the original Love Train by Con Funk Shun today for the first time I was blown away by it. I was surprised by how close Silk Sonic's cover is to the original, but it's easy to see why Bruno and Anderson went that route. Then I saw this conversation, and was really moved by Michael and Felton's enthusiasm and humility. I feel so glad that their music is receiving recognition from a new generation.
Oh my!!! This is truly a God given throw back feeling from beyond a blast from the past. Good to know the two gentleman that Was being "played" by the same female was able to rise above the foolishness to continue to survive and live beyond the hurt they both probably endured from that individual. Nothing like true friends to carry on beyond the hurt. For the two to still be together after
Forty years, still in the studio, gives a dynamite legacy of friendship. So proud/glad the original songsters give kudos to the newbies and looking forward to one day ,performing this song tighter. DYNAMITE.
Incredibleeeeee interview.. I graduated HIGH School in 75" One of my favorite groups. LOVE TRAIN I still have the 8 track... Bruno & Andy keep it True !
I love both...the original and the remake! I appreciate the O.G. more and more, every time I hear Silk Sonic's version., because the remake is soooo good it takes me back to the O.G.. ConFunkShun is a legendary band with a legendary vocalist...Michael Cooper!! Loved the interview. New subbie...
:: There's a reason why music always transcends everything: Love. And that's all I can see here. Thanks to Silk Sonic, I had the chance to discover an excellent band, Confunkshun!!! Like Michael Cooper and Felton Pilate said, they could have covered a more famous song; do the obvious. No. They decided to prove us (if that was necessary) that there are more music gems to uncover (and cover!! haha) and pay tribute to!!! Cheers from Montreal :) ::
They need to mention that. And like Con Funk Shun it wasn't a single. And they did it theirs and way. And it wasn't an exact company. Silk Sonic killed it with the performance though
I was sooooo glad that they had the opportunity to speak about the remake of Love’s Train. I loved Con Funk Shun from day one, and it’s still one of my favorite Bands. It and Earth Wind & Fire are my faves.
This is gorgeous, giving love on this beautiful song from Silk Sonic who are paying homage to those who inspired them is how it should be. Michael and Felton are true gentlemen. Would love to see them perform on the Grammys together. 🐨👏🏼
Great interview! I absolutely love ConFunkShun. When I heard the Silk Sonic remake I lost my mind. I usually hate remakes, but they did an exceptional job. Both versions do it for me.
Much respect to Mr. Cooper and Mr. Pilate writing Love’s Train and appreciating Bruno and Anderson tribute to ConFunkShun. It’s nice when an artist appreciates another artist. I saw ConFunkShun live in Atlanta with my cousins and we enjoyed them. Love’s Train is truly a classic. Thank you Ms. Hawley for the interview. “You don’t need no, you don’t need no ticket to ride” is my favorite part. 😀
what a great video. Great to see Felton, my favourite in the group. I also love Bruno, so to have him do a cover of Love's train is just amazing. He is definitely bringing back the funk in his music, must be why I love him so much.
I remember when that album came out I could not wait to run to the record store and buy it. Confunkshun was one of my all-time favorite bands growing up. They just do not make music like they used to!! Old school all the way!! Thank God Bruno and Anderson are showing these young kids what real music is all about!!
Michael Cooper has a pure voice. It is strong yet silky. Back in the day, I had the worst crush on him! I still love Confunkshun's music. I love the backstory of this song. It takes me back to much simpler times.
Wow….lovely interview, thank you so much! What Silk Sonic has done with this song has been the best remix of a classic ever, they stayed so true to the original and put some respect on it! Excellent!!!
This interview is everything to me. Confunkshun is my favorite band of the 80’s. I’m familiar with these men because I read every liner note on every album cover. I’m a true fan!!!!
Thank You, Miss T for this "Exclusive" interview. I specifically searched to see how ConFunkShun would respond to the cover. I'm elated to hear Michael and Felton give accolades to Bruno and Anderson for their artistry! I still listen to the original on HEAVY rotation and now, Silk Sonic made a new version. #Genius 💣💋💌💕👠👠
There were such huge shoes to fill to even attempt to cover Loves Train by living legends ConFunkShun! These men sold millions long before the internet and it warms my heart to see ConFunkShun getting blessed again! Love and light from NC, USA.💜🙏💜🎶🎵✨
When I first heard Brono and Anderson's version, I had to pull the car over and ROCK OUT. Then I played my best of Confunkshun CD and fell in love with my whole day. Thanks Confunkshun and all that you've collab'd with (Taste of Honey especially).
As a true fan of the original OG's and in my 50's when I first heard the newer version they had me hooked..indeed.. Can't wait to see them perform in person!!
I never thought any artist would try and re-record this song because the original by Confunkshun was an absolute masterpiece. Silk Sonic did a great job and did the song justice. It took a musician like Bruno Mars to pull it off. Confunkshun is one of the greatest soul/funk bands ever
Bruno's dad is Puerto Rican from NY. It's in his bones... Mr Hernandez is a drummer and like my dad played nuthing but the best of Soul Music and Funk .. Bruno was raised on it and everything's cool...
The original tune by ConFunkShun was appealing to all I do remember, mostly the youth of that time, who listened and danced to it (slow jammin)...Brunos just a full out phenomenon and big ups to Anderson Pak and Silk as well, talented brothers!
My 8 year old nephew was jamming to Silk Sonic version last night and when I told him it was a classic remake, he said, “I know that one too, their voices are deeper.” It was great then!
Love# 2.7k plus 1, thank you Mr. Cooper & Mr. Pilate for your honest critique. I would have said the same thing. Can't wait to hear the tribute. Thank you so much for sharing & making me smile. Thank you Ms. Hawley. Excellent idea both groups close out a show! Love that song!! Tina in Cali
So proud of Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak making great timeless music. So happy to how well they get along and it shows in their music and videos. Class act. Their music is beautifully and geniusly arranged. Love’s Train is an example of this. Kudos to Silk Sonic.
It’s a long list of why this hit so hard you have to think this song was made 40 years ago it blows my mind to think in 2022 a legendary song got remade in a generation where live music is rare and live instruments is rare micheal cooper voice is infectious the ad lips he did in the song are fun and soulful Felton Pilate to write a song that stands the test of time is mind blowing parents please teach your children about the music that came before them so when they hear a sample they know who it is
Awesome interview. These guys were my idols when I was growing up. I know that Danny Thomas what's the original keyboard player and he is no longer with the group but with someone please make a piano tutorial for " Shake and dance with me" because I have been trying to learn to play that song correctly for a long time and even though I became a big fan of Con funk shun when I first heard" FFUN" , it was " Shake and dance" that made me a fan for life because the song was so unique anything else that was played when I was 11 years old and I had my mother buy me the 45 single so I woke up every morning and play the song over and over at least 20 more times every morning and I made my big brother keep rewinding the eight track back to " Shake and dance" whenever we road in his car. Rip to my brother. But there are so many songs by them that I wish would have all been singles but the " Loveshine" almum what's the one that started all. Rip to Louis McCall as well and to Michael and Felton, just keep the magic going. And when I was 10 years old I always thought the album cover to " Secrets " what's so cool and when I turn the album over I could figure out who was playing what instruments and for some reason I knew that it was Michael Cooper with that unique voice without even seeing them live but I finally got a chance to see them in concert in 1978. Great interview.
Great interview. Love the friendship. Loved them from the Spirit of Love album and went back and forwards. I hope they get more credit now. Sadly they were never that well known in the UK.
Love how props are given and cant wait to hear the rendition they do of Silk Sonic. Both of these groups are true musicians. Love the horns, guitars, they bring everything. You truly feel it all in your soul. LOVE IT!!! Thank you ConFunkShun for laying the foundation.
Soft & Warm, The Quiet Storm, KBLX. “I’m Leaving Baby,” and “Love’s Train” were staples on Bay Area’s 102.9 🎵🎶🎵 We catch Con Funk Shun at Yoshi’s Oakland. They put on a great show.
Awesome to hear the OG’s give props to Silk Sonic for remaking their song. Bruno is definitely bringing that ol skool feeling back and I’m enjoying music again. Kudos to you all!🔥🔥🥁🎷🎤🎺🎧🎼
