Learn how to spice up your tumbao "Patato" style in our latest conga video lesson. Instructor Edgardo Cambon opens up to 2 and 3 drums.
Latin Percussion LP City Wood Congas 10" & 11" Set: amzn.to/1Uz3kQK
Carlos Valdés (November 4, 1926 - December 4, 2007), better known as Patato, was a Cuban-born American conga player. In 1954 he emigrated from La Habana to New York City where he continued his prolific career as a sideman for several jazz and Latin music ensembles, and occasionally as a bandleader. He invented and patented the tunable conga drum which revolutionized the use of the instrument in the US. Tito Puente once called him "the greatest conguero alive today".

Adelante.

To clear the confusion:The original LP factory was in Palisades Park NJ. They then moved it to Garfield NJ). These towns are right across the Hudson River from NYC. Not to be confused with Palisades NY-a town in Rockland County about 20 miles north of NYC. One Love

Could you do a lesson on what each type of drum is (I.e. conga, rumba, bongo, etc) what is a fair price for each type of drum, is the price with the drum heads, how much are heads, how are they installed, how are they tuned ? And any other relative information you deem important. I would like to start learning each of these drums/rhythms, etc. thank you, it is nice to have found someone who truly knows how to teach these great talents.

Thanks for your comment. The conga heads come from a percussionist and instruments make in Colombia, his name is Billo Quiñones, and here is his FB profile link: facebook.com/billo.quinones. Buena suerte.

Gracias por el video. Una pregunta: Cuando la conga se afina en C, quiere decir eso que esa C es middle C, como se dice en inglés?
@Eddysuconga
@Eddysuconga 7 лет назад
Suerte !

H Carl, Kona (my dog) is a mutt, probably Doberman and Pit mix... She is about 5 years young now, and she is the sweetest dog I ever had, and I had many, she was a "handful" as a puppy (over active, anxious, etc)... It is just her nature, but I work with her, and stuck to her, and she trained me too! (LOL) .

what tuning are you using? sounds great
@Eddysuconga
@Eddysuconga 7 лет назад
Wedeyamusic, I did tune this drums by ear right before the lesson. (-:).... However, middle "C" note for the high conga, a 3rd and 5th below for the other two drums is a rather common interval, but I am not sure if thats what this drums were tuned to on that day, because I did not use a piano or a pitch fork or tuning device. I usually tune by ear to my liking. Thanks for watching!

Were those drums made in 1974 or were they recently custom made by LP in the 1974 style?
@Eddysuconga
@Eddysuconga 7 лет назад
Original 1974 made in Palisades NJ in 1974. Some of the lugs have been (obviously) replaced over the years. I didn't buy this drums in 1974. I bought them about 3years ago from a friend that knew I was in the market for this drums. Thanks for asking. Enjoy the videos!

@Eddysuconga
@Eddysuconga 7 лет назад
Hi Ras, thanks for your comment. This video and ALL my videos posted are for beginner or (some) for intermediate players. What I teach on this videos is for students to have some basic skills on this type of grove to expand. All I play and teach is taught my way, and played my way. There are plenty of Patato's videos out there for you to further investigate. Good luck on your drumming progress.
