Congressional Workers Reveal Culture of Abuse On Capitol Hill

Congressional workers are speaking on camera for the first time to reveal a culture of abuse that sparked a drive to unionize Congress. They’re severely overworked & underpaid. Some are on food stamps & can’t afford rent. They're organizing to form the Congressional Workers Union to fight for change.
But right now, congressional workers are not legally protected if they organize. Representative Andy Levin and over 150 House Democrats have introduced a resolution to change that and give congressional staff the right to unionize. Senator Sherrod Brown is leading a similar effort in the Senate.

As a former congressional staffer, let me remind you that: a) each Congressional office as its own little fiefdom, b) Congress has consistently written exceptions for every single employment law, c) there are also many staff who work on committees and subcommittees who are also under individual control.

This is a wonderful video. It fills your heart with hope when you watch it. Especially when congressional workers are inspired by unions like the ones at Starbucks & Amazon. 💖 When the congressional workers are given the legal right & protection to form a union, that day will change DC & America in a massive way. I can feel it! 🦅🇺🇸 Thank you for making this video, More perfect union! 😊

Oh my God💔🇺🇲🇺🇲💔💔. I was thinking "Culture of Abuse" perfectly describes my life as an American‼️ Maybe we should let the kind & loving empathetic siblings lead for a change in place of the current destructive abusive mentally ill pathologically narcissistic ones‼️‼️🌎🇺🇲💔💔🍃🍃🍃

I don’t think unionizing Congress is the best idea. Imagine having to add to the regular fiscal shutdown threats, walkouts by congressional staffers.

Welcome to my world. The lowest professions are nurses and teachers. I took state boards in 1972, and never made more than 10 thou. So today in retirement I live on 956 per month N 100 ssi

A bill standardizing pay and raises for staffers with mandatory reporting for abuse should be added to the list of all the other needed reforms including term and age limits.

The ☝️ issue Democrats, and lone issue they differ from Republicans are the right to collectively bargaining. Other than that they are part of the corporate duopoly.

'Back in 1995, Congress passed the Congressional Accountability Act, ...and this was supposed to allow workers on Capitol Hill to be able to form unions and bargain collectively. But at that time, Congress applied it to everybody except the people who work directly with us. For 26 years, Congress failed to apply the freedom to form a union and bargain collectively to our own employees, the people who work within our district offices, in our D.C. offices, and on our committees.' - Andy Levin | Michigan Democratic Congressman

1) union bargaining isn’t just about pay increases. 2) in areas like DC this is barely enough to get by 3) don’t be a hater organize to get better wages for yourself

Do you live in DC? I couldn't make it in San Antonio for that amount. And they said 30k. Not 40 to 60, which is peanuts when rents are 2.5 to 3k or maybe more.

30-40 grand in one city dont move the same way in another city. In a rural area ur doing pretty good. In most metro cities rent alone is 15-20k let alone gas food utilities . U might scrape by but dont have any kids...
