Thanks for the review and for showing what an actual turquoise looks like in comparison. And thank you for your letter which arrived in the mail today, very appreciated that you took the time to respond !
I ordered this as soon as it came out but I was initially disappointed because it didn't look like the pre-release pictures that Goulet Pen Co. had posted, at least as I remembered them. I was going to return it but gave it a try and I'm glad I did, as my medium Jowo nib was excellent, although like yours more to the fine side. I also don't care for the aesthetics of the clip and think it would look less cheap if it was laser engraved instead of stamped, but it functions well. Besides being comfortable to use the one feature I really appreciate is that it has a single thread start and alway lines up the engraving with the clip. That is something that drives me nuts with other brands, such as Edison and Leonardo. I think the All-American is a decent pen and a good value.
I love all of the reviews you made - very precise, to the point and covers the holistic view. Honestly, I try to look at your review before considering any pen - so you became a guru! I would request you to elaborate on the writing experience with the nib and the pen weight with the cap posted or without on your reviews. Keep doing great work. Love from new Delhi, India.
Thank you for removing that spelling mistake in the final take, though! I remember when Matt Armstrong made four spelling mistakes in two words. One thing, though, when you lay the cards down, you tend to smudge the ink on the writing sample. Maybe hold them up or scan them?
That Bubonic Plague Doctor pen is Fantastic. Love everything about it. Even that it’s a ballpoint. I think if it were a fountain pen it wouldn’t have that 80’s vibe
Looks identical to Conklin Word Gauge (in everything but color). Similar too in nib quality it seems. I really enjoy writing with the WG. The tooth gives a very pleasant (to me) resistance.
@ Nicholas Adams Question about your Word Gauge. Is your Word Gauge from the Heritage Collection ? IF YES, how smooth is the piston mechanism ? I have a Word Gauge from the older Word Gauge lineup made in Italy and I find that the piston mechanism is really tight. The Medium nib writes well when the nib is wet with some hardstarts when the feed gets dry. Thanks in advance when you get a chance to reply
I really like the shape of the pen but I agree with you that the clip is not my cup of tea and their logo could use some modernization. I personally would like to see this pen without a clip. Thanks for sharing.
Nice review - I like my turquoise. All American is one of best bang for the buck IMO, I have 5 of them. A nice well balanced big pen. All stub nibs. Conklin nibs get bad rep, but I never had a problem with stub.
I have two All-American pens; the Sunburst Orange and Old Glory. I don’t care much about the other colour models. This new turquoise model is pretty decent and I’d probably buy it had I not already owned two of these pens. That said, Conklin pens, like Monteverde, are incredibly hit & miss affairs. Both pen makers turn out fairly attractive looking affordable, inexpensive pens. But this is ruined by their usually unreliable, abysmal nibs. I have 6 Conklins, 5 Monteverdes. Of these 11 pens, 5 have been disappointing duds, to say it mildly. When I think of more reliable, better (albeit normally much pricier) and truer all-American fountain pens, I love all my Edisons and Esterbrooks far more than either Conklin or Monteverde. Until I hear they are making quality nibs, I won’t buy another Conklin again.
@ Sajjad Husain Sorry that you are having nib issues with your Conklin and Monteverde pens. If you are in the States , you can contact Christina Perez at YAFA PENS, for your nib issues. I sent Yafa Pens an Email concerning a nib issue and Yafa Pens sent me a new replacement nib without having to send the the original nib in the pen. Besides , Conklin Pen is the 1 of maybe 3 Fountain Pen companies that offer a LIFETIME MECHANICAL WARRANTY on their pens. So maybe reach out and try to get the NIBS replaced . I believe that their NEW NIB units have NIBS made by JOWO which are more reliable and better quality, I think that Edison and Esterbrook pens have JOWO nibs on their pens and you love their nibs.
I believe that the pen is made in China (newer Conklin nibs in Germany). So I think it is somewhat dishonest to call it the "All American" If the pen is made in USA, please correct me
No, they are not made in the US anymore. Not sure where, I read Italy on one blog, though it would be cheapest to outsource to China or India, where most pens are made. I want an American made pen...I’m considering Franklin-Christoph, Fisher Space Pens, or pens made by American artisans.
