Today I'll show you how to setup your Raspberry Pi to connect to your iPad over USB so you can use it on the go.

Thanks for the tutorial, how may I charge my ipad while connecting to pi? Will a dongle work?

I charge my iPad via usb c port on the case but you could probably also use a usb hub that has a data usb c port and a power usb c port.

Take a look at the Anker 332 USB C (5-in-1) on Amazon. Charge iPad on the PD port and plug the Pi into the other USB C port.

So this means Pi is running with iPad battery. Can I ask how long does the battery lasts? Also, can this raspberry pi be configured with a WiFi to operate as a standalone while not connected to iPad?

Honestly haven’t tested but I have used it a few hours at a time without any huge loss of battery on the iPad. Yes, that’s how i have it setup. The Ethernet over usb connection is just so the iPad can connect to the pi. I keep the pi’s network separate besides that

@beamnetworks1 Thanks, I guess I should test with my USB C hub with 100W PD input capabality. My current project requires RPi GPIO and full WiFi capability. So, sacrificing just the USB-C port of RPi4 as a wired connection seems very fitting. And no, I cannot use VNC or even ssh via the WiFi where thenproject will be happening.. unless the institution goes through my devices for security check up and loads of paperwork..

@TheMachineShopUK I am sorry for the downtime, the site was running in Oracle’s cloud and that VM was down. It is fixed and the site is working again!

Might be able to do it with a lightning to USB C cable. It might even work with the one that came with your iPad.

Honestly not too sure. Haven’t used it with Pi 5 yet, only Pi 4. Most likely something with the cmdline.txt or whatever that file was.

Hi, it’s me again. I managed to connect to the Raspberry Pi from my iPad, but whenever I establish the connection with it, my iPad loses internet connection. Is there a way to fix this? Thank you very much for your help.

Not sure if there is a way to fix it. Only way to fix it would be to create IP tables routing from wifi of the pi to the Ethernet interface the iPad is on.

Hi, great video. But after finding the ip of my raspberry pi, and trying to connect to it the terminal throws this message “ssh : connect to host xxx.xxx.x.xx port 22: Connection refused” hope someone can help me 😔

Reboot & give it time to boot. Also need to make sure you enabled SSH in the installer.

@@beamnetworks1 If it helps, the problem was that my keyboard was not allowing the Raspberry Pi to boot. Literally, I just disconnected it and it worked perfectly.
