In this video I take my old FreeNAS server rip the guts out of it and turn it into a JBOD to be used with my Truenas (Proxmox ) Virtual Machine.

Hi, the switches that just connect quickly and then disconnect are called "momentary" switches. So avoid those if you need always connected circuit. Thanks for all your helpful vids.

My favorite part is when you realized that you really didn't need the power button that bad. I do the same type of thing all the time when working on projects

Dude it happens all of the time. I just get my mind set and try to force the subject.

I'm looking at a Sabrient USB 3.2 5 bay docking station. But will be used with TrueNAS.

I didn't go that route because I had all the other stuff laying around. Otherwise I would have bought something like that also.

I’m new to this I have old hardware like a 3950x ryzen and 3 harddrives and I’m wanting to do my first nas. Ut through proxmox will I have to get that pcie card or can I just use my data ports on my motherboard?

Is the only function of the power board to connect to the 24pin PSU and power the fans?

One of the things you could do afterwards is make a video showing how to use fio and with what options used, in order to check a newly created pool if it performs the way it should be. You could include zfs Raid10 RaidZ1 % 2 which are the most common ones. Same or another video you could show the dependence of the hard disks native block size 512b or 4k with the ashift option you choose and the block size of the pool which depends on what you save to that pool. Well just gave you an idea for a series of videos not only one. Not many channels showing off proxmox done that in a meaningful way. Another idea would be presenting how to setup a 10g connection between 2 proxmox nodes with a direct connection (via onboard or third party 10gbe cards) or via a 10g switch and show the configuration on proxmox side , switch (if used) or the OS as well meaning the change of the MTU number , jumbo frames and how all these affect sharing speeds. Finally someone could make a video explaining the network section of prox by using a 4 port network card and explaining the difference of using vmbrs on top of binded ports or even better creation of aggregation by binding ports to linux bonds and creating vmbrs on top of those bonds using fail over or balancing scenarios with best use case scenario LACP mode. All the above were things none answered in forums or showed on videos and had to purchase hardware and check for myself. PS Proxmox uses a enterprise file system and volume manager which is zfs and none tried to explain all those things and the connection between them and just makes videos of installation of new edition of proxmox and some plain configuration which will lead newcomers to frustration only , when they are going to see how badly it performs. Of course the could use lvm but that is another night's story.

The other end of the connector to each of the drive cables looks like a SFP plug, is that right? PS great videos.

It is an SFF-8088 plug, and yeah they look similar. here is a link to the one I bought (not affiliated) www.amazon.com/dp/B013G4EZ1G?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Thanks bud loving the videos... I'm a noob to home labs and got myself a r720 with 8 x 4TB and watched so many videos .... injust want a fast file system ZFS to utilise all 32TB and to run MacOS VM any chance you could do a video on setting up ZFS raid on proxmox or Truenas and how to access the 32TB over the network as a share?

I'm throwing around the idea of creating a TrueNAS bare metal server and doing a serious of videos that would cover ZFS pools, shares, permissions, snapshots, etc. Do you think this would be of assistance?

Silly Question - did you change the fans out from the Molex ones you were going to use earlier in the video, for ones with PWM? Did you go back to the Noctuas?
@LoResDIY
@LoResDIY 2 года назад
I replaced the Noctua fans in the front of the case with the molex fans, and the Noctua fans that were in the center of the case I am leaving out until the PWM board arrives. Once that does I plan to put all of the Noctua fans back to work.

I was shocked to find out you didn't know you need the CPU and ram for basic functionality. The motherboard has no processing power on it. Hasn't since socketed chips on either side. That being said though, if you wanted to use it for drive monitoring, you could get anything really low power that could run a stripped windows or linux install and have it purely run fan control and temp monitoring software, and enable Wake on LAN for that machine, That way your server could control the power of the machine automatically, just have to come up with a solution to allow the server to turn it off at will too.
