Connecting Pentatonics To Chord Shapes - This Is A Must!

Guthrie Trapp

After an unbelievable few weeks of running hard and playing hard all over the place, I thought it might be good to get grounded and back to the basics here for a few minutes.
This is a little insight to linking the framework of the chords and pentatonics. It’s all directly connected and when you can see it and hear it is when the light bulb moments will start coming in.
Have some fun with it and take some chances!
Thanks, always.

Don’t forget this guys.. the “CAGED system” is nothing new and it’s not going anywhere. It’s simply the chord inversions up the neck. Once you get those and the framework around them, it all comes together a LOT quicker. That foundation is everything!

You explain this so well! You tap into something that makes it seem common sense. The practice making it second nature is the hard part - which is part of what sets you apart from the rest. Along with your ear and intuition - that sets you in a different stratosphere. You show that it CAN be done with hard work and not expecting it to be easy. You are inspiring, Mr. Trapp. That is one of the greatest gifts a person can give or do for another.

Great breakdown, Guthrie! Thank you! Update: So after watching this lesson, I picked up my guitar and having the Guthrie’s lesson fresh in my memory, I started doing his exercises. The lightbulb 💡 came on! Wow! Just knowing the connections of the 1,4 and 5 (G,C and D) and where those notes land along the scales was “ear” opening. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of this lesson. A sense of accomplishment for sure.

First you take Manhattan, then you take Berlin! Would love to see you in Berlin sometime if you ever have a tour passing by 😊 Another fantastic insight into just how to see the fretboard. You’re the only one (youtuber) so far that has ever had a way of explaining what that “visualising” the fretboard actually means. I’m going to just take a step back first and check what way my fingers are landing as I go up the board. Never gave any thought to the way you do it by always falling roughly into the chord shape. Another eye-opener I can only benefit from, thanks! Don’t forget, come to Berlin! 😊😊

This video and the last one . This is IT. Why? Because I screwed around 40 years like a lot of these guys . My teacher (I had several) but this one guy a good musician and my friend still refused to teach me this . All he would do is write out tabs for songs and say you don’t need theory. But he’d say he never saw anyone as stuck in the pentatonic scales as I was. But during covid I got the major scales under my fingers . Now I have the arpeggios and chord shapes but am practicing/memorizing like ok do 4 or 5 chords at fret 5 and so on. So. When you move through this it sounds like music . When I do it it sounds like noodling or nothing. But I think these last 2 lessons are it. Why learn anything else if it’s not sounding good? Thank you very much.

@@bmoneybby And this is why everyone sounds the same. They all follow a certain curriculum like they're building a house and they're left with a white washed, male suburban neighborhood. Then they try to get fancy by painting their house a different color, but everyone knows it's just a front and they're trying to be different (key word is trying). No one's buying the image. They all know he secretly wants to go inside and put a gun in his mouth because he realized he bought into the curriculum and is not different from anyone else in that suburban neighborhood. The improvising is the person living within the home. It is the soul and body breathing within. You can still have a rickety house and have someone living in it. Blind Willie Johnson (great blues player) lived in a burnt down house and his bed was the bath tub. My point is, you don't need a luxurious, flawless style to have soul living in your playing. Don't worry about that.
