This is my how to video on connecting a monitor to a laptop with a broken screen. Most laptops have an auto detect feature for connecting a VGA or HDMI but if yours doesnt, here is how you do it.
So it worked for mine! However I would like to add if your computer normally prompts a voltage notification (to press f1) or if your computer shuts down (enter>start windows normally) can trigger the homepage to display as well. You just have to make sure you press those buttons around 10 seconds in between from startup as you would have normally. Thanks again!
thanks bro, i had an laptop with almost all of ,y childhood pics. Found it after 13 years just because of you I was able to take a look at my childhood.
Broo, I have a meeting tomorrow and i needed my laptop, guess what the screen broke today, BUT YOU SAVED ME. Thank you so much man really appreciate it!!
i have a laptop that has a half cracked screen, i have an external monitor, but i dont have an HDMI or VGA cables sad days now i think i have to buy an HDMI also thank you for making an awesome video, its rare for me to come across something that i actually wanted to see and had what i needed to figure out 😄
Another option worth trying. When you turn on your laptop close the lid immediately. And it should detect the external display. Automatically. Of course you have it plugged in already.
Thank you! Yesterday I managed to make it work following the video but today it didn't want to connect, your comment saved me 😊 (or saved the computer since I was tempted to throw it out of the window lol)
Hello I have a big problem, I dropped my laptop during the installation of windows 11, I saw a video that said I remove the connection from the monitor it would read my secondary monitor automatically. So I opened it (novice) and found a wire that lead to screen from behind and I unplugged that from the mother board but instead of a cracked screen I have a black screen and no visibility. Do you have any suggestions thank you
ive been using broken screen for a long time and real issues, only skimmed yr video with little patience right now but THANK YOU, a fiddling with some of the keys you mentioned - hooray!! working!!
you're absolutely a life saver it's been almost a week that m trying to do that and it didn't work but know it done i lost my words right know cuz m very happy thank you so much ❤️
There is a easier way to get to the login screen: When on the lockscreen, (the page that shows a picture and the time) just hit the space bar. To open the menu that comes up when you hit the mirrored screen button, hold the windows logo key and press p. To go through the menu items, you can press the up or down arrows to highlight an option, and press enter to select until you see the screen in the monitor. This is much easier than trying to use the mouse blinded. Hope this helps anyone
Your video is awesome ... actually I accidentally forced my laptop to close it, I didn't know my handfrees were on keypad...& When I realized there's something wrong I noticed crash with lines from inside the screen. I think the hardware is safe. Please guide me
This helps you to connect, but how do you make the external your main display when the laptop is broken? Everything I try to open opens on the laptop screen and not the external
hello i have a laptop that is broken and i always connected it to the hdmi cable and everything was fine until i turned off the graphics card since then it won't connect to the monitor can it help?
mine still won't work. i'm testing it with my new laptop and it works but not with the old. maybe it's too messed up to work with. :( update: it worked.
I had an external monitor hooked up with mirrored display (because my screen was already broken) and when my laptop was doing an update it went blank and nothing would show up. I also had scroll turned off on my laptop (use a mouse instead). I was freaked out about the monitor not turning on... With this video, and just messing with those monitor buttons you mentioned, i got the external screen to turn back on, only to realize that there was no login screen, only updates happening, that say "your PC will restart several times." in end, i just needed to give it time, but i still think the monitor buttons you mentioned helped. Thank you much!
Same like when i turn it on it finally starts showing at the log in page, like rn im installing windows 10 from windows 7 and i cant see nothing cuz it starts to show at the log in page not when booting i have no idea on how to make it show cuz i cant see anything
I found a laptop that had decent specs on ebay and the display was bent so the original owner thought it was broken and not working anymore, so they were selling it at a really cheap price lol
hi. so when i tried it , it didn't work for me still. I'm using a Hp Pavilion entertainment PC. can you please tell me what should I press for the screen to come up in the monitor?
Hi! Quick question regarding external monitors: I've recently bought a very nice gaming monitor, the MSI Optix MAG321CQR 31,5" monitor. Now, I'm intending on building a new stationary computer for it, but until then, I want to connect it as an external monitor to my current gaming laptop, whose screen unfortunately burnt out a year ago. The laptop in question is the Lenovo y510p Ideapad gaming laptop, which I bought about 5.5 years ago. So my question is, are there any dangers in doing so? For example, if my laptops graphics card isn't powerful enough or meant to process such a powerful QHD screen, can connecting the screen damage my laptop or the monitor itself? Thank you. Best Regards Jonathan
My laptop is in the Windows 8 Boot in. So like it yourself get a new laptop and there's a key already but you need to configure it. And my display is dead... So what can I do?

If you have the mirrored screen option hit that button again until eventually you see your home screen.or try right clicking on the blank screen going to your display settings and select show only second screen
Thank you Tyler, I am in the same situation with my Hp pavillon g6, I was pressing Fn , I think I should not , I will try again with monitor botton only
So my laptop screen broke a while back ago and using an HDMI cord with the TV usually worked but I found that I recently had to restart my whole PC, now that it's done I have no way of seeing the startup or setup screen as my TV will no longer recognize the signal for my laptop if someone knows something to do please reach out to me I'm very confused.
What worked for me: The monitor (via HDMI) automatically became the main screen with the broken screen removed/disconnected. Simply rebooted with the monitor connected. Used the laptop as normal, no drama when it sleeps, no stress about turning it off. All you need is a small screwdriver and 5 minutes to remove the screen. RU-vid search your laptop model to see how to remove the screen. Hope that helps! ETA: Once you see how easy it is to remove the screen you will do the replacement yourself and save $200 dollars.

Disconnect the broken screen , open up the laptop and unplug the lead going to your screen. The laptop will now boot to external screen through vga or hdmi. You can unplug it on the motherboard or on the back of the screen, whatever you find easiest.

@@colleenrandall5628 Hi Colleen, hope I can help. Firstly could you tell me which model laptop you have please? Just to recap what I did with mine after disconnecting the screen I plugged an hdmi lead into the laptop and the other end to my monitor. Had to go into the monitor settings and change the input over to hdmi, started the laptop and the picture came straight up. Its possible you might have to press a button combo on the laptop , to change to hdmi output, that depends which laptop you have.
The monitor has buttons and set to hdmi. Full list of what happened. I was using my other monitor but encountered an issue running games so I attempted to install windows 11 via usb. A DX issue or graphics card issue and figured windows 11 would be a good upgrade. However, I was unable to set the bios to boot usb due to the cracked screen. It didn’t turn on the second monitor by default. I watched a RU-vid video on disconnecting the monitor cable from the motherboard which would put the new monitor as the primary. Which I did, but now my screen is black, I had a windows 11 bootable usb plugged in and somehow installed it using text to speech accessibility. It was a miracle, however, when on the windows 11 desktop I attempted to install the sager drivers for NP7877PQ. It said windows 10 but figured it would be ok. The first driver was intel rapid storage (Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver for Windows 10 64 BIT) which in retrospect was a bonehead move because now when I restarted the screen is black again, I don’t have the text to speech option and I can’t access anything. Is there a feasible solution to fix without sending this in?
You can keep clicking the extended screen button to switch it to mirror mode. you could also try right clicking on the newly displayed screen and switch it to your main screen by going into display settings and making screen 2 your main screen
