This video will walk the viewer through the connecting and testing of Harbor Freight 35-AH AGM batteries in parallel. The basic concept is that, when connecting in parallel, the two batteries will work together to add the amp hour ratings of each battery, while the voltage remains the same. The example shown is two 12-volt, 35-Ah batteries wired in parallel which become capable of providing 12 volts for 70-amp hours (35-Ah + 35-Ah). In this way you can create a solar power battery bank.
batteries together in parallel., deep cycle battery, deep cycle battery for solar, batteries connected in parallel, diy solar generator, solar power system for home, solar power bank, solar power battery bank

Good simple instructions! You can also connect the positive alligator clip to the positive battery post of one battery and the negative alligator clip to the negative post of the other battery. That way both batteries will discharge and charge equally whenever there is a load on them, or when you are charging them. You can also read the voltage by placing your multimeter leads in the same manner on each battery. Again nice video. Keep up the good work!

Hi Shoestring. When charging the batteries with my Thunderbolt 100w solar panel (with charge controller in between), do I connect both leads from the charge controller to the same battery (similar to what you did with the inverter), or do I connect the positive to one battery and the negative to the other battery? And the same question with the inverter. I read some of the comments below and "Bob Reinhard" said to connect to two batteries to charge/discharge evenly. So I guess I kind of answered my own question, but just looking for some reinforcement that I understand correctly before I hook everything up. Thank you - Joe
@shoestringprep
@shoestringprep 2 года назад
I hook my charge controller up to just one of the batteries and that seems to charge all the batteries in my bank evenly. But I can understand why other people say you should split them between both batteries. But how I do it works well for me. Let me know how it works out after you decide what you're going to do. Thanks for your comment.

Hello Shoestring 👋. Thank you so much for the video. I've been trying to find one for hooking up this kind of terminals since I purchased the HF thunderbolt bat as well. You confirmed my idea on getting a nut and bolt, wasn't sure about the washer. Just wondering what size nut/bolt did you use? Was gonna get a size 10 bolt, that kinda looked like a 10 size bolt you were using. Need power for a diesel heater in my garage. And a few other power projects down the road. 😀. Thank you for the info. 👍

I hope to be able to run a 12-volt, 2 speed RoadPro fan for 8 to 10 hours while I prepare to sleep, sleep and get up in the morning. I have a 100 watt solar panel and I'm trying to figure out which battery I need. Should I purchase two of these batteries and run them in parallel or one 100 amp hour deep cycle battery? Your thoughts would be welcome.
@shoestringprep

I would suggest a 100ah AGM battery. This would be more efficient in the long run, and less expensive. Extra tip - the fan on low draws substantially less current than running the fan on high. Let me know what you decide. Thanks for the comment.

The gauge you use is dependent on the amps going though the wire. 10 gauge will handle up to about 30 amps. The 4 gauge I use will handle around 100 amps. Look at your load and then decide. Thanks for the question.

Great video thank you! Can you explain why some people after putting their batteries together in parallel use the negative from one battery and the positive from another battery rather than like you did, positive and negative from The same battery? Again thank you
@shoestringprep
@shoestringprep 3 года назад
Connecting positive to negative is connecting the batteries in series (not in parallel). In series, the voltage is increased while the amps stay the same. In parallel (as I did) the voltage stays the same but the amps are doubled. All my systems are in parallel because I want a 12-volt system. Thanks for the question.
@bobreinhard3575
@bobreinhard3575 3 года назад
George, by hooking up your inverter using the negative from one battery, then the positive from the other battery, you discharge both batteries evenly. Hooking up both to the same battery will discharge that battery further than the 2nd battery and not evenly.

@shoestringprep

If the batteries are going to be inside with you, please go with AGM or some other sealed battery. The number of batteries you will need will depend on how many watts your tv and fridge draw and how long you will be running the devices daily. If you find you need to add batteries to extend the time for your devices, add each new battery in parallel.

Hey shoestring, new sub here. Also new to solar just built my system in my pickup cap. I have 3 batteries in parallel, but I was led to believe that when taking power from batts you go pos 1st batt then negative from last battery in line, so it's basically running through all the batts rather than taking from 1 battery and then using the other batts to resupply that 1st batt. And then opposite terminals when charging, dont know if that makes sense , msg me if not and I'll try explain again, I'm definitely no electrician though,I have watched all will prowse vids ... lol

@@shoestringprep not quite what I meant, but ok., I'll explain again, not talking about what is hooked up first, I'm talking about the placement of the main pos and neg terminals shouldn't be on the same battery or am I wrong. It has to do with even charging and discharging across the batts evenly. If you have 3 batteries then take main pos from batt1 and then main neg from batt3, not batt1 neg, otherwise the battery with both main terminals drains faster, it has to do with electron flow I think. Anyways no big deal , just a question. I've recently put a small system together and was curious about our different methods, I dont think it's a "do what you want thing" I think there is an optimal method for parallel battery connections
@shoestringprep
@shoestringprep 2 года назад
If you connect your batteries positive to positive and negative to negative, it's called connecting in parallel. It keeps the battery voltage the same but extends the amp hours. If you connect your batteries positive to negative and negative to positive, that's called connecting in series. Your voltage is increased - two 12-volt batteries, for example, become a 24-volt system but your amp hours remain constant. Thank you for your comment.
