Thanks for the tutorial! I usually install OpenWRT on my routers, and I was actually searching for an OpenWRT tutorial. All of them were mentioning how you were gonna lose/not use your WAN port, I couldn't even get it to work, then your tutorial showed up, and just by skimming through I was able to install DD-WRT and configure it in 10 minutes and have it work on the first try.

Thank you Richard. This is the only video that clearly explains (at my level) how to connect a secondary router to an ISP-supplied router. Most others suggest replacing the ISP router with the replacement, which is not possible with our Zyxel XMG3512-B10a DSL router. Even resorted to the TP-Link forum, which resulted in crickets. Thought I was doomed to asking my neighbor's uncooperative kid. Thanks again! Liked and subscribed.

It works! I now have two additional units hooked up, as of tonight, all with internet! Three total with the router. All working well. 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3. I plan to add two more. .4, .5. I am using multimode adaptors to 300 meters of fiber on one unit. No noticeable issues. I finally understand basic DHCP and most important the Gateway setting (192.168.1.1) and the importance of its address. THANKS RICHARD. I get it now.

I did this a few years back to extend our wifi network to another dwelling on the property, and a few months ago I added another one, so I've got three wifi routers connected together. DD-WRT was not necessary for any of them. They are all stock wifi routers. All I did was change the ip addresses on the two additional routers so none of them conflict, and create unique SSIDs. The physical connections were just as you described. Works great. Router 1 is a D-Link DIR-615, router 2 is an old Lynksys Wireless-G, and router 3 is ..... can't even remember the name but I picked it up in a thrift store for $3.

How to change up address in a router?
@JDHeavysteel
@JDHeavysteel Год назад
Old post but still relavant. A really Great tutorial . Easy to understand the basics how to set this up without all the useless rambling that some do. Flashed my older $400 NETGEAR R8500 to DD-WRT. I was worried the flash would not work due to so many others saying the R8500 does not support DD-WRT correctly without issues. I am hear to say that this saved my old R8500 from being an expensive paper weight. I have a Netgear R7000 and a R8500 both running DD-WRT as VPN/WI-FI extenders and a Netgear RAX45 as the main running the latest stock Firmware. No matter what I did The R8500 would not bridge with Netgear stock firmware. IP address conflicts even with DHCP disabled. Lots of frustrating hours ironing that out because the DD-WRT Firmware was looking sketchy due to so many with negative comments and results. I already knew this works with my R7000 router. I flashed the R7000 a few years back, but that was a highly recommended router which supports DD-WRT. So I went on Amazon and purchased it specifically to run as a VPN router running DD-WRT at that time. I finally gave in and hunted down an earlier R8500 complete .bin / Flash file and the R8500 did flash without issue. I then downloaded the latest DD-WRT v3.0-r49418 Flash from 7/04/2022 and updated again without issue. I had to adjust WI-FI channels back and forth a bit the achieve good speeds, but right out of the box internet speeds via ethernet on both secondary routers (Downloads were 940Mbps pretty regularly / Up speeds at 35 - 40 Mbps). Real happy with these results. Runs all my Alexa devices without the constant dropped connections and reconfiguring devices. Once your home becomes saturated with smart devices you really depend on these routers working 24/7. I am currently typing these comments while connected via The R8500 WI-FI. Very Happy Indeed. Thanks Richard!!

You're most welcome and thank you so much for commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. I generally only use DD-WRT on my routers. I own 3 R7000 that I bought locally for under $7 each! I also own an r7000P which is not very stable, it reboots frequently. I haven't figured out the issue YET. I also think the TP-Link Archer C9 V1 (own 2) are pretty well identical to the R7000 in as much as internally they are the same hardware and run DD-WRT flawlessly with the same performance all around. Both routers support my 1Gps Internet connection flawlessly. I will be making a video on those two routers in the future as two of my favorite dual band 1Gbps routers you can buy for under $30! I am going to look into the r8500 as it looks like a nice upgrade on the R7000 and the six Ethernet ports with the agregate option looks interesting too. I'm glad and very happy to know that I could help you. Thank you again. All the best.👍😀

Thanks for the help. I used a Linksys 2500e that I flashed with dd-wrt. Paired with primary Arris 6900AC. Worked as you described except I couldn't use the WAN port. Once I connected to one of the 4 other ports, off she went. Works absolutely great. Also using a Power line adapter to get the Ethernet signal from one side of a brick multi-story house to the other side. Amazing technology. Clocking over 50 mbit speedtests outside on the porch where I previously got less than 5 mbit consistently with a 100 mbit coming into the house.

HI Richard, Thanks very much for good explanation about the connecting two Wifi routers using a hard wire connection and sharing the internet. It is a great detailed video. However, I have got 3 old routers namely; TalkTalk DSL 3680 broadband wireless N150 ADSL+2, Plusnet CXNT and a Tesco Thomson TG580. I have tried all the processes you have described here in this video; Unfortunately, I could not get any of these 3 routers Connected to my main Vodafone broadband router. My problem is once I changed IP address of the router to a different one I can neither save it nor reboot it in order to have the new settings as you described it> Also Once the IP address of the secondary router changed then I will not be able to access the newly changed IP address in order to see if the changed parameters are there? I am sure that You have got a great knowledge about the 3 spare routers that I have got; I think the Plusnet is the newest and more sophisticated one which I want to use as a secondary wired router. My main router (Vodafone one Is upstairs one) If that is not possible then the TalkTalk DSL 3680 broadband wireless N150 ADSL+2 second newest one and lastly the oldest one is the Thomson TG 580. But Out of 3, only the Plusnet one has got the WAN port the others have not got the WAN port to connect my ethernet cable which runs from upstairs to downstairs? I would really appreciate if you give me detailed information about how to go with the process in order to connect my newest Plusnet-CXNT router as a secondary router. As I mentioned above this is the only one with the WAN Port. Your help on this matter greatly appreciated once you have got some spare times? Regards Maz

Hi Richard, excellent explanation. I have a different scenario. There are thousands of people working for the government moved to remote positions, where they cant use a wifi connection due to security issues. They run an ethernet cable from the router to their workstation to stablish a wired connection. Most of the times, they just lied the cable on the floor to their working room where they can’t anymore shut the door. Besides, the wiring looks messy. A video showing a solution for an alternative method to get a wired connection to your workstation without an ethernet cable running along your home would help thousands of people. 1. One way would be using an ethernet overpower connection, but I understand that it comes with a reduction in your internet speed. 2. The 2nd way would be using the already wired cable installed in most of your rooms in your home. You can access it from an outlet, or your cable box attached to your TV, and connect it to a 2nd router or access point and run a short ethernet cable from there to your workstation. Is that possible? Would you need a second IP address, because you are sort of creating a second SOHO network? How would you have to configure this second router? Please, let us know. Federal employees working in remote positions will appreciate your solution. Regards.

Ethernet over power is OK but sub-optimal for work at home environments with VOIP and or video. Running Ethernet LAN cables is an option but will require you to run cables but if you know what you're doing this could be done (but not for the faint of heart). Now your second suggestion is something I have already done in my home and it has worked out well. Now I only did it so that my modem and router would be centrally located but I could switch the location to any room in my home as there is a coaxial cable TV connection available in all of them, some of them have two! So I could easily switch the data connection to any one of them. Now in your home you may be able to connect your modem to any of those coax plugs and have it work. I am not sure how they handle the routing of the data feed. They may send it to every outlet. I set up my own to do away with the installation fee. It was well worth it as I also have an Over The Air OTA antenna array that I feed to all the other coax outlets and I can watch 48 OTA channels on any one of those coax taps. Spectrum in Texas did not have a problem with me doing this and seeing that I own my home it was not a problem. Tell me what you found. Thank you so much for commenting, watching and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Couple years old this one, but hopefully it ain't too difficult today. We have a couple of routers and I am looking at just this sort of thing. Does it need to be TP link with the custom firmware? The parent router needs to have DHCP enabled? And both on the same network IP/mask, different IP addresses, as mentioned. Is that the bottom line? What is custom about TP link that makes that work? Or would any secondary router work?

Worked great!! Even DD-WRT flash worked.. There was one problem in the video.. The WAN port working as a LAN port.. There is a check box on the DD-WRT Basic Setup page.. "Assign WAN Port to Switch" Check this and the WAN port works like the other ports!!

Thaks Richards for this very well explained video! I specially appreciate the details you add so nobady may make a mess along the process. I used this to trouble shot my second router, but had no succees in solving a traffic issue... may be you may point me in the right direction? When connecting my PC to the second router, the upload speed is less than 0.5 Mbps, while when I connect it directly with the cable coming from the main router I get 8/9Mbps. Same happens with a laptop which leads me to believe it has nothig to do with the PC or laptop nor its firewall/antivirus but with the secondary router itsself (Linksys EA2700). Wifi and downloading speeds are OK (100Mbps) Any way.. thanks again and greetings from Buenos Aires!

Hope you can help. Made a mistake with a setting on the ddwrt router to the extent I can not access the setup control panel. I put in the IP address of the vpn flash-routers setup page, but my home internet router’s setup page pops in. Since I had the vpn firmware installed at flash routers I cannot reset the vpn router without wiping all of the firmware. Do you know of a workaround for this problem? TIA.

I have a couple of questions. First do you have to name the new WiFi with a different name? What if I just wanted to use it as a WiFi extender so the same WiFi network extends to places that are slow. If I have to set it up with a different WiFi name but it’s plugged in to the main network can I still use all the wireless devices from my main network on the second one (I.e. printer and Mac home sharing)?

Question, I just bought (6-30-20) two new TP-Link Archer AX50 AX3000 Wireless Dual-Band Gigabit Routers (waiting for them to come in from B&H photo back ordered). Do you think I will be able to connect these routers? Using one of them as a access point. I've done it with a couple of there older routers by watching your videos in the past and all works well, just would like to know your thoughts on these newer routhers. Thank you Richard.

Thank's for the excellent tutorial, I found it easy to follow, being new to this tech'. I have a question though: If I try to open both routers in the same room, one cancels out the other, but in separate rooms they work fine independently is this the norm or have I missed something ? Thank's.

I am doing this in my home right now because the signal strength from my primary router is low in the bedroom. I have a linksys ea9200 as the 2nd router, but I don't want to have to deal with dd-wrt. Am I right in assuming that the only difference that I'll have to worry about is the fact that I won't be able to turn the internet port of the linksys into a standard lan port? I think i can just keep that port disconnected and connect the 1st router to one of the remaining lan ports. I am only using this 2nd router for wifi connections, so I'm not conserned about having an extra lan port. I think I'll have to turn off NAT as well on the 2nd router.

It should be possible to do with the stock firmware on both routers. Following a similar procedure. I will probably do a video on how to achieve what this video shows how to do with two routers running stock firmware as well. Thanks for asking. All the best.

thanks, although you kind of over explained some stuff... I guess for someone completely new, what you've said are just enough. Anyway, one question. Disabling WAN connection also disabled setting static DNS. I'd like to still use OpenDNS for all devices in my network. Is there still a way to set them up through dd-wrt without manually editing each of my connected devices' network settings?

I think you will need to disable the DHCP for the second router only if you connect them LAN to LAN port only , in your case where you connected LAN to WAN you can keep it on, secondly when you make the default gate number 192.168.1.2 this can cause conflict in the IP numbers so the correct things is to change the last two segments like 192.168.0.2 thanks

Sorry, one more tech question. The Ethernet run between where my two Routers will be, there's already a Cat 5e Ethernet cable installed running to my garage, which I will need to extend up to the room where the other router will be. 1) can I use an Ethernet female/female connector adapter without creating a point for speed loss or interference issues? And 2) can I use a Cat 6 cable from this point to extend to my other router? Or must I use a Cat 5e? I assume the best would be to have one uninterrupted Cat 6 between the 2 Routers and get rid of the existing 5e which will be a hassle due to having to run a new cable in the walls, so easiest would be to extend the existing either with the Cat 6 I have or buy more Cat 5e if connecting a Cat 5e and Cat 6 will be problematic? Thanks!

Great video. Tnx! Will try to set it up exactly like this, have 2nd router TP Link 940N flashed with dd-wrt. Have a few questions based of many guides I read: 1. why didn't you set Gateway to 192.168.1.1 in Setup>Basic Setup (2nd router)? 2. Also some other guides are suggesting that firewall is turned off for 2nd router 3. Advanced Routing, mode to Router, is this needed or not? Default is Gateway (2nd router)
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 7 лет назад
You can set the gateway to that if you wish. Realize that the DHCP server is on the primary router and it will assign the gateway to all the clients connecting to either router by default so it really will not be an issue but feel free if you wish to set it on the secondary. Firewall (shut off) and advanced routing are not required this is up to you if the second firewall is an issue on your network you can shut it off as well. Thanks for the great questions. All the best.

@richard Lyod, great video, do you know how I can leverage this bridge setup but use a single SSID for both wifi routers, so devices like phones can seamlessly switch and use both. Also should these devices use SON self organizing network? Update: Saw your other video and it helps understand the benefits, but with new mobile devices shouldn't they be able to now prioritize the stronger connection and switch to it?
