I sometimes see Criffel from some of the summits of the Lake District so I thought it would be great to hike up and look the other way. The views up there were better than I expected. I do enjoy a Winter hike too. Thank you for watching and your comment 🙂
It was dull and overcast that morning so I dropped lucky going up at midday when the weather was turning. Also the crowds were on their way down rather than up at that time so also so a fairly quiet summit. The views didn't disappoint and were pretty awesome 🙂
It's summer time and that makes it busy for me too. Cutting wood, maintaining the garden, all kinds of chores around the house and also a holiday for the son. You're most welcome. I was only aware of Criffel as I've done a lot of hiking in the Lake District in England. When you can see Scotland in the distance Criffel is the big hill that catches your eye. I figured I would hike up it to try to get views going the other way. The views were pretty awesome from up there. Actually better than I expected. The walk can also set out from New Abbey where I believe there is a historic abbey to explore 🙂
What a lovely place to hike and explore. Scotland is so breathtaking. I would love to visit for myself someday! Everything is so lush and green. Beautiful and peaceful. Criffel walk looks lovely. I like some of the stone steps there are! Look at those views of the beautiful green hills and the bright blue skies! Looks quite steep so I would be out of breath too. Hi Mike, always great to get parked up in a decent spot and lucky to grab one of the last 2 places when arriving. I never did figure what the bridge was for other than taking in the views. The summit views were certainly better than I expected and worth the climbing effort. The UK weather can be hit and miss but mostly miss so I was lucky on this day. Thank you very much for watching. Beautiful day Paul and with no wind noise and the birdsong it was definitely a good idea to leave the music out. Couldnt hear the drone/bees myself. Remember looking over to that area from the Lake District, didn't realise it was that nice. Could make out the clouds on the water quite nicely 👌 nice trip out mate, very green 🌳🐦
Hi Matt, it was dull and overcast that morning so went up at the right time. I think there was a bit of wind but my microphone cut it out nicely. It's just when it's super windy it has some issues. I've dispensed with music more in my recent videos. I talk a lot now instead 😂 I didn't hear the buzzing noise on the video but it was there and I didn't see any drones. Hi Tracy, the views off Criffel were definitely better than I expected. The climb was also harder than I expected as I wasn't feeling my best for some reason. The clouds were creating some nice scenes especially when reflecting off the waters of the Solway Firth below. I think I had a couple of glasses of red wine whilst watching Gladiator on Netflix that evening. The place I was staying at had Netflix. I'm glad you enjoyed the captured views from the hike. I remember taking my daughter and her boyfriend up Great Gable and showing them Criffel. The boyfriend couldn’t believe he was seeing Scotland! 😃 Bet you enjoyed that in the end Paul. I'm usually fine after a parkrun doing a wee hike but not on this day. Felt better after that electrolyte tablet in my water and a banana tho. The slog to the top was certainly worth the effort as the views were a lot better than I expected. You always see Criffel on a clear day from some of the summits of the Lake District so thought it would be cool to look the other way 🙂 I dropped lucky with the weather and the timing as it was grey and overcast that morning

Hi Paul what a fabulous day weatherwise, gorgeous blue skies! Great start with free parking and available space even after mid day on a bank holiday Saturday! Nice gradual climb sorry to hear your energy levels feel a little low sure the energy drink gave you a kick! Fabulous trig at the summit! Good idea avoiding the mud on what might have made it a circular! The mud has been relentless this year with all the rain but hopefully we are finally in for a sunny warm spell think we brought it back from Spain with us! Loved that Gnarly tree on your way down! Well it was dull and overcast that morning would you believe so it was a good time to go up. Also most people were on their way down when I went up. I'm not sure why I lacked energy that day but the energy tablet I dropped in my water certainly helped. The views from the summit were better than I expected. And I'm glad I decided not to fight my way thro the bogs as this was the day after the 3-4 days of heavy rain so it would have been really bad. What a place👌♥️ Never seen anyone do that route before, but it was absolutely stunning. The views up along the coast from the summit were amazing. I’m always turning around when do a walk as the views are often very different (especially if it’s a circular route). Enjoyed that mate 👍
I always see this hill when looking over towards Scotland from some of the Lake District summits so fancied doing it. And well here I am. Quite a steep climb but totally worth it for the views. Nice hike through an incredibly scenic area. I had to look up the Solway Coast on the map because I've never been to the UK. The video is very inspiring and makes me want to get out there for a refreshing hike soon. The summit was worth the slog and offers sweeping views. 👍👍

Lovely hike Paul, but it's hard to be a hermit with "tons of people!" So beautiful you can see why. Stunning views from the higher areas. I would have stayed out of the mud too! In fact, I may have just waited below. Must be a pub around somewhere! Beautiful hike.
Hi Dave n Kathy, thankfully the tons of people were on their way down when I was on my way up. Quite a few passed me on their way down. It made for a lot less busy more hermit friendly summit. The views sure were worth the effort. The pub sounds good too and I did have some wine that evening with my feet up. I'm glad you enjoyed the captured views. Hello IJ, yeah on this walk I was feeling a lot less energetic than normal but I do carry electrolyte tablets that I can drop into my water. That coupled with the banana seemed to perk me up. @@iJSabelle007 yeah I think this was just one of my off days. I do sometimes climb some pretty deserted places but I carry stuff with me that should help me out. I have a first aid kit and plenty of extra warm layers in my bag for instance.

Loved the sound of water in the wooded area and the path did look nice and easy to walk on and with arrows for direction. Hi Paul Seems you got lucky with the weather for this day and got some great views. I've only been up Criffel once and didn't get the same result haha & agree it's a bit of a slog. I believe that path is quite new as the previous one was a bit boggy ... seems to be the theme of the day& you made a wise choice in coming back down. . It's fun seeing the Lake District hills from a different angle, & Im glad you got the opportunity... could you identify any.? Sorry to hear you went feeling 100% & hope you were soon back on top form for more adventures
Hi Christine, I got lucky with the timing as it was overcast with spots of rain that morning. Doing parkrun does have it's advantages. Another advantage was most people were walking down Criffel as I was going up. Also when I went up Criffel it was the day after that period of a few days of hard rain so figured it would be wise not to fight my way thro bogs. The views from up there were better than I expected. It was a bit hazy towards the Lake District but I think the tall one is Skiddaw. I wasn't feeling unwell or anything on this one but did lack my usual energy. Thank you very much for watching 👍🙂Paul
brilliant...we did it years ago and there was no main path...some really bad bogs...we then went over your planned route, it was a knee deep nightmare...
That path certainly helped a lot as this was after the time we had that heavy rain for about 4 days in a row. Actually that could describe most of the year. I think I made the right decision doing the out and back on that lovely path. I did start on the other path but you soon hit bogs and a chap who'd been that way looked as tho he'd fallen waist deep in a bog. Still it was a cracking day for the views up there 🙂
as i read your title, i'm positive i've mispronounced all of it in my head. then you said it all and i was only part wrong. wooooo! 😅not used to seeing you without a hat on, not sure i ever have. yay! ah, but then the hat came on, rightfully so in the sun. per usual, you've found a great place to take us along, paul. love the crunchy gravel, nature sounds, gorgeous views, and greenery everywhere! what a beautiful day you had. unlike you, going down is way harder on my knees than up. do you ever use a walking stick(s)? especially with some of the steeper trails? or are you just crushing energy drinks and smashing hills with knees of power? at least tell me you're sore the next day. not that i wish you pain, but gosh, i guess i am. i am a jerk! 🤣 🛴❤
Well it can be easy to mispronounce place names. I'm never 100% sure I have them correct unless I'm from the area. Oh yeah the hat was off showing my freshly scalped yed ha ha. I thought I'd go no music and just natural sound on this one. This was a short but sharp climb and for some reason I was low on energy. I do have walking poles but they seem to be always be left in the car. I have had surgery on one of my knees but they seem to handle both up and down quite fine. I don't think I was too sore the next day after this one 😂 Over Easter I did 4 strenuous hikes 4 days in a row and a 5k run in between. My legs were tired during that stint 🙂 I always find keeping them moving is the way forward. I'm glad you enjoyed the captured views on this one. They were pretty good.
