Wonderful lecture and Q&A. There's an issue with the file: At 47:48, after "ideas of Neanderthal are changing now," it repeats 10 minutes of an earlier section of the audio, starting with "What happens -- someone goes along, and then there's a problem to be solved..." The lecture picks back up at 57:18, with "But it's when human beings..." Learn more about Julian Jaynes's theory by visiting the Julian Jaynes Society.

00:00 Introduction 04:02 Talk begins 10:21 What is consciousness? 33:04 Where did consciousness come from? 47:47-57:18 Skip this section (repeat) 1:02:34 Evidence of the bicameral mind in literature 1:11:44 Relationship between the brain and the bicameral mind 1:17:58 Talk ends Questions 1:18:31 Can you comment on the Eastern concept of personal, universal, and divine consciousness? 1:19:07 Was there a physiological change in the transition between the bicameral mind and consciousness? 1:21:05 If we go to non-urban societies today, do we find societies that aren't conscious? 1:22:34 Where is consciousness going in the future? 1:24:25 Does the origin of consciousness have to do with natural selection? 1:27:13 Would stress set off the right temporal lobe? 1:28:38 How much of your book comes from concepts of metaphor? 1:29:37 Can consciousness exist without content? 1:31:22 Was consciousness picked up as children? 1:32:01 Analog "I" and introspection vs "self" 1:33:00 What age does a child become conscious? 1:33:25 Would consciousness take the place of neurological reflexes for sophisticated decisions? 1:35:04 Does the code transmitted through the anterior commissures or corpus collosum have to be auditory language? 1:36:18 Is there a possibility of an analog "we" Rest is generated by AI "How about people who have language on both sides?" "Has there been a follow-up to my book or journal articles?" "In AR Consciousness, there was a drawing that showed a room with gods or idols in every room. What can you say about that?" "Are we slipping back with TV being in every room?" "If someone from the past were brought up in New York City, would they be just like us?" "Could this just be a matter of linguistic usage that people back in ancient times used the metaphor of God speaking to them?" "How will they be able to understand and use our language which is based on the concept of 'I' separate from 'we'?" "Why is it that every language in the world is very complex and there are no simple languages?" "Since Consciousness is based on language, does this mean it's different from one linguistic group to another?" "Since there are so many mind-changing drugs on the market, couldn't this mean that everything I've called Consciousness is simply a physiological chemistry that could be changed?" "In studying ego development from an infant through adulthood, is it possible that in each individual there is this breakdown of the bicameral mind?" "Are there degrees of Consciousness and is Maslow's concept of peak experience a higher state of consciousness?" "How does Wernicke's syndrome in chronic alcoholics relate to your theory?" "Is it not possible that a charismatic leader can come about and more easily tap into this kind of mechanism then lead people in certain ways?" "How do you view the channeling type of phenomenon?" "What would you say the link between Consciousness and creativity is?" "The person who is in a hypnotic trance, these states are being referred to as Altered States Of Consciousness. How do you view these states?" "Is monotheism a consequence of the breakdown of our bicameral mind?" "Do I accept Gilbert Ryle's ghost in the machine concept of mind?" "Have we lost something by losing our contact with the bicameral mind?" "What caused the breakdown of the bicameral mind?" "Tell us the name of your book." "Where do you place the paranormal capacity in your system?" "Is schizophrenia a relapse to the bicameral mind?" "Which philosopher or psychologist has had the greatest influence on your work and thought?" "Everything that you are conscious of not being necessary for existence, how do you think of it as unconscious or just non-conscious?" "How does the analog I manage to identify itself with the non-conscious realm?"
