Hi Steven, been following these religiously and love the content every single time. especially the more psychological ones, so insightful, always keen to see who will be joining you next (teasers at the end of a podcast could work and build up anticipation? although the surprises are fun too!) Would gladly come see one of these live! (in UK i'm assuming?)

@TheDiaryOfACEO: I don't understand your introduction (you always say "I hope nobody is listening but if you are, please keep this (knowledge) to yourself"). Why would you hope that "nobody is listening", and why would we "keep this (knowledge) to ourselves"?! Does anybody understand this introduction or it's only me who finds it really weird/confusing? haha

The chimp is the ancient primal reactive instinctual passions. As cortical thought developed they surfaced as emotional stories which formed the feeling self. In humans the chimp brain can build fanatasies and believe delusions that are often detrimental to survival and well being.

We've created a world where it doesn't make sense for psychiatrists to develop this kind of full understanding and insight (though the compassion should be ideal either way), for better or worse, but I do think MANY therapists and psychologists would benefit from studying his work and advising.

Yes he is very good indeed, even under rated. He is on par with Jordan Peterson, but doesnt get the credit he deserves, because he's english. Ronnie O' Sullivan credits Peters with much of his sucess for the last few years.

“It’s not the fear of failure, it’s fear of not being able to deal with the consequences of failure”. Spot on! When I ‘fail’ at something, especially at work, I fear the consequences of my line manager’s next move, since I feel (there’s that ‘chimp’!) that he/she will take over the situation: “ _I_ am now going to make a decision on _your_ mistake! ” My ‘chimp’ takes over and thinks, ‘Oh no, my line manager’s going to do something bad to me!’, fight, flight, or freeze! Prof Steve Peters is genius! I am currently reading the book and never has a book hit the spot as accurately as this one! Now I know why I have felt vulnerable in spite of my intelligence.

I'm just finishing listening to the Chimp Paradox audiobook. It really is amazing. I used to think of myself as being a duality of a constructive and destructive self, but I knew it was too much of a simplistic model. The model of the human, chimp and computer is much better. The idea of harmonising with the chimp and not trying to ever overpower it is groundbreaking. I need to practise coordinating with it and finding ways to fulfil its needs. The "million pound question" was also a great insight for me. I'm going to have to read The Chimp Paradox multiple times to absorb the information.

This really made me see the light during a really dark day, it's been 2 months after I broke up and I'm constantly going through highs and lows asking my self why am I feeling this way even though I've been the one who ended it. Thank you Steven for sharing your personal story with us, I'm now more aware of my feelings and think I can get through this with less self judgment.

I read Steve Peters' book, 'The Chimp Paradox' some years ago and the lessons still resonate and have stayed with me ever since, he's a genius and his teachings are so important... I feel I understand myself so much more from learning these important lessons about our brains, it's fascinating stuff. I will be, however, purchasing his new book as I wasn't aware he'd written this so thank you Mr Bartlett for bringing Steve to your podcast, you're contribution towards your fellow man & woman is remarkable so a huge thanks from a fan of your work.

Loved this episode and it came at a great time. I liken his chimp brain metaphor to the wounded child model where every emotion/maladaptive behavior you exhibit in adulthood was potentially a survival mechanism developed in childhood that can be reconciled once you realize the narrative/behavior is no longer useful to you now.
