Being able to avoid politics is honestly a virtue that only the overprivileged ever got to experience. If you are a marginalized person in any degree, politic is a critical part of your being.
This is really dumb. I know tons of underprivileged people who are completely politically disengaged. In fact the people most into politics seem to be generally upper middle class in my experience
Yeah, i think what the older folks are really mad at is that they can't always sit there and spout their political opinions while assuming everyone agrees with them because the power dynamic means they won't say anything.

Might go without saying, but towards the pants-lens by which society uses as a heuristic for cultural goodness, could it be that what is unsaid ie _who is wearing_ the pants that speaks more to what is actually catalyzing the aesthetic discomfort under the surface? Sometimes a cigar is just a penis, sure, but y'know, who is imagined to wear baggy pants v. who is imagined wearing tight pants seems to reveal an underlying consistency with the pants preference.
My mother recently started talking about people running red lights and not following rules while driving as proof that society is crumbling or crime is out of control and nobody cares but them. I didn't realize this was so common.
