Conservatives call for scrutiny of Mark Carney over firm’s pension proposal

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre and other Conservatives called for additional scrutiny of Mark Carney following his appointment as an economic advisor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after Brookfield Asset Management, the firm which he chairs, pitched a proposal for a multi-billion-dollar investment fund.
The $50-billion asset fund would be seeded by as much as $10 billion in federal dollars, with the rest coming from Canada’s large pension funds.
“Isn’t he a walking, talking conflict of interest,” Poilievre said, adding that the economic task force Carney heads up only has one member.
“On that side of the house, they get their foreign policy advice from Elon Musk and from Tucker Carlson,” Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland pushed back.
Michelle Rempel, Conservative MP for Calgary Nosehill, pushed further, asking if the Liberal government or Brookfield had cleared any of the firms activities with the lobbying commissioner.

The CPP fund is comprised exclusively of money contributed by employees and employers. No general tax dollars form any part of the fund. It is supposed to be managed to guarantee retirement payouts for those who contributed. Trudeau and Carney are proposing to take over the fund and invest it in whatever vanity project strikes their fancy with no regard for the profitability of the fund. Simply put, they want to Nortelify the CPP fund. If they crush the fund, they simply shrug their shoulders and tell pensioners they are dreadfully sorry, but the fund is empty. It's a way of borrowing money with no requirement to pay either principal or interest back, and no liability for either Carney or Trudeau. Carney isn't even a real elected official or a real government employee. Otherwise he would be in a conflict of interest situation. I am glad Poilievre is looking out for our interests.

Wouldn't the same investment rules apply whether or not CPP is managed by the Federal government or outsourced to a private management firm? Your explanation makes me want to see an Alberta Pension Plan as quickly as possible. Carney is a lobbyist with extraordinary reach within the Federal government. I don't understand why the many scandals have not toppled the Liberal government. SDTC is shaping up to be the worst yet, and all the Liberals seek to do is to block the release of documents that would enable an RCMP investigation

Quoting from CPP Investments: "CPP Investments is a Crown Corporation that operates independently of government; its sole aim is to invest the funds and maximize results without undue risk." What Trudeau is proposing is to carve off chunks of the fund and hand them over to a private firm called Brookfield Asset Mgt which has NO mandated obligation to invest the funds to maximize results without undue risk. To the contrary, both Trudeau and Carney have ideas about investment in high risk ventures that they think might fit with their vanity projects. Remember that both Trudeau and Guilbeault flunked out of STEM programs but believe they know all about running the world and saving the planet. The scheme allows these two to play around with people's pension funds and if they bankrupt the fund just shrug their shoulders and walk away. Clearly they both admired what Roth did with the Nortel Pension fund which he used as a sort of private slush fund.
