No fishing today, just hanging out with my family and replacing a reel that is a bit small for the rod that I have currently. I'm visiting J&M Tackle in Orange Beach to make my selection and get spooled up!

Remember you make your living by being a surf fishing guide, so the new reel and beach cart is a tax write off.

I believe that word you're looking for is "leverage".
@adamklingerman8806

Agreed, I have most of my rods custom rebuilt. In fact I have paired some of my 11 ft rods with the 8000 series, you want to talk about leverage you can't beat it. This might be a bit of a over kill in some situations but it's nice to know it's there.

Yep, combination of leverage and gear ratio. Need longer handles and bigger knobs for bigger fish and more weight on the line.

Change the tires on your current cart. You can then make a video or two about the cart rehab process. And then you can take the price difference and get another new reel.

Ive got the long cast version 6500. With 20lb, 9 strand braid and 65 lb shock leader i can cast 140 yds with a clip down rig. That will usually put you on the beach side of the third bar with a little wading your out over the third bar. Sometimes thats the only place I can get a bite especially at low tide.

What's up Bama, sure you dont remember me, I did a trip with you in May. I am the one who give you the Michelin hat. As you know I live in Tx and when I am in gulf shores I always make it a point to stop by J&M and do all my dealings with Andy. You are 100% spot on when you say he is the nicest coolest guy to work with. Very helpful and answers all questions. 95% of my gear is from them. I might be hitting you up for another trip 1st week of Oct. Great video.

I, have been surf fishing for several years and purchased the junior beach cart with the thin rubber tires. Had a hard time getting through soft sand. So I replaced the tires with the wheel ease soft rubber tires. Best money I, ever spent! The cart floats over soft sand. The large cart you showed in the video is a great deal with the gray rubber tires. I am 74 years old and could not pull the cart with the old tires. Buy the one with the large gray tires you will not regret it. Thanks Jerry. From Jacksonville, FL.

Bought the bigger cart with the orange wheels just before summer and it has been a life saver on the soft sand here in NC. I put plastic grated sheeting on the bottom and it stops smaller items falling through. Picked the sheeting up in Lowes, I believe it's used for suspended ceilings. Also have the same model 4Runner and the cart fits in with the back seats down. Will not fit sideways because of the wheel arches in the trunk.

I swapped out the treaded black tire wheels on my cart for the big gray plastic balloon wheels. It was a hassle to do but it now rolls like a dream in the sand. If I had it to do over, I’d get that Senior model with the bigger wheels. Hope it fits in your vehicle.

I am a Shimano owner by heart. I have quite a few models and several models of Stradic which I love. But I got a Slammer 3 3500 and recently bought a Slammer 4 5500. I think those i use for throwing cut baits for bigger fish purely because they weigh more (they break your arm casting big spoons all day) and they have a stronger drag. I have caught many big fish on the Stradic and have no issue casting lures/spoons/bait all day.

Thank you for another great video. I have the senior cart with the orange tires. I like it, but I would prefer to have the option of wheels with some kind of bearing or bushing where it sits on the axle. I can see that the inside of the hub is starting to wear. Having said that, it will carry all you would need for a day on the beach. I recently bought a pair of Shimano Ultegra XTC Ci4+ reels for surf fishing. They are very light & have the deeper spool with a slow oscillation that gives great line lay on the spool. These really give great casting distance compared to other spinning reels that I have.

I fish with primarily vintage surf spinning reels. Out of around 50 reels in my collection only 2 or 3 might be considered modern spinning reels. I happen to love my Penn Z reels and my old Greenies. I also use several Daiwa reels a lot - the silver series 7000C and an older Emblem X 5500T. I have the old Mitchell saltwater reels - the 302, 306, 302N, 488 etc. and they are fun. I use Offshore Angler Ocean Master rods primarily. I really like your videos about gear. Up here in NC we have to use heavier rigs and weights, etc. but rods and reels are very similar to what you are using in the Gulf.

You seem like a well-versed fisherman..........Need to ask you a question: When Bama Beach Bum was getting the line put on his new reel, the guy in the store first put on some heavy braided line (20-30 lb.) and then tied on some lighter line and finished filling the spool with that. Question: Why do they add the lighter line at the end....???.....50-100 yds.......??? Why don't they use the 20-30 lb. braided line from start to finish. Appreciate your input.

Heck yes, really enjoyed this video! Enjoyed seeing the family, your lovely wife and cute little girl, just having breakfast together just adds an 'every man' feel to your videos. You don't present yourself as a 'know-it-all', scientist-type expert like some channels do, you're just an every day guy like the rest of us, who happens to have a special, hard-earned knowledge of surf fishing and you share that knowledge with us like you're talking to friends or family - I really like that about you and the videos you produce. I enjoyed going to the tackle shop with you - I'd be like a little kid at Christmas in that store! Enjoyed the 'tutorial' on the reel you bought, and why. But for me, I was especially interested in the beach carts you showed us. Been thinking about getting one myself ... but at $250 - $300, they're just too expensive for me, no more than I would get to use it. I have a small homemade one I'll continue to drag around. Anyway, didn't mean to run on so long, just really enjoyed this video and wanted you to know it ... and why. Thanks buddy!

I have been researching replacing my cart tires and the conclusion I’ve come to is to buy Wheeleez gray tires and axle. I live in Collierville, TN, so whenever I head to the shore I remove the tires, and I’ll remove the axle if necessary, in order to fit the cart, etc, into my SUV. Yes it is not the most convenient, but it is no big chore to reattach everything when I get to the beach. Good luck with your decision and your new reel.

Hey Bama! Changing the tires on a perfectly good cart is something to consider. I don't know much about the Spinfisher, but see if the 5500 handle will fit the 4500. I have a lot of Penn reels from long ago (still work great by the way) and I had gotten 704 handles for my smaller 712 reels. only one drawback on that. Because the bail on the 712 is a spring load, you have to position the bigger handle down otherwise when you cast the weight of the handle makes it drop and close the bail midcast. I lost a few jigs that way but live and learn! All the best to you!

I'm frugal, I would modify the cart you have, and save the cash for something else. I work in manufacturing and we put pneumatic wheels on the equipment we build. Looks like Walmart sells pneumatic beach wheels for $10-$18 each, the hub may already match your axle diameter. Pop a wheel off your cart and measure the diameter of your axle. Use this to source your new tires. If you decide to upgrade the wheels yourself, one thing you may run into is that you have to also change out the axle. It's really simple. I can probably mail you an axle free of charge if the diameter matches what i have, most common for cart equipment is 1/2" and 5/8". Inbox me if you need anything... Also, i'm going to Destin in 2 weeks, plan to do some beach fishing. Learning a lot from your videos. I can bring an axle down with me if you're in the area and fix your cart in 20 minutes. Ayy what model Costa sunglasses do you have? Are they the fantails??

Some stores will charge high $$$$ for just buying separate "upgraded wheel/tires" package. The pricing for a new cart is better overall at $299. As others have said the SR. cart is bigger for sure...hope it fits for you. I have the same SR cart with the grey wheel/tires...works like a champ. I can load it up pretty good with too much stuff and still roll to the beach pretty easily. Maybe search around for the better price but $299 is great. For the reel: As others have said you want more leverage which equates to torque. The 5500 you bought will have roughly the same line retrieval rate 39" per turn but it's going to be "easier" in a sense due to handle length. The better thought is line capacity....SO much more over the 4500. Not that you need or put 500yds of 20lb on there BUT it's there if you need it. Awesome Fam-day video and technical/logistical conversation on that BeachBum life. Keep reelin'!!

Get a Labrador to pull the cart play with the kid and protect Mom. And be your fishing buddy. Believe me they do it all. So cool to. Oh and I like the Albright knot to join Two lines.

Go with a Quatium Bo co 80, great reels, I have caught thirty and forty pound redfish they work well . I bought a size 120 in Florida several years ago they are too big, but it is a nice reel. I match them with a 12 foot Penn rod great set up. I'm older now I have went to a ten foot Penn less tiring at the end of the day

I bought a Spinfisher 4500 recently and just got back from the beach and managed to caught a 7ft shark out of a 10 yak with the reel while I was after some kings....the 4500 can apply mucho stress to the fish but I do know what you're saying about the handle....I have no problems with my 4500 but know exactly what you're saying about the needs to go to that 5500......fish on brotha! 👍

For the "money" I would go for the cart with the gray wheels, if it will fit in yer truck. If not I'ed go with the third cart with the black tires. Also "saving " you much money ! AS for yer Penn 5500SSVI right on ! A great reel . I have eight Penn reels, from a old 230SS - 8500SSVI. They are all pared with Peen rods and I love em. Never had any fail. The new Peen reals are as good as they get. Price is a bit high, tho compared with some others,a real buy. The last and last. Way to go. Thanks for the best fishing videos also. Yes, leverage. And I agree that you should just replace the axel and tires...unless you upgrade significantly. Otherwise why pay $300?

Any thoughts on the after market knobs available to swap onto existing handles?

Bama you have a great little family. No advise about the cart except if it were me I'd just change out the tires. Cuz I'm cheep and that's how I roll, lol.

I have the same beach cart, my issue with it is the forward rod holders (near the handle). The bottom of the holder is a piece of red plastic held on with 2 rivets, mine blow out easily and the rod falls through and have ‘almost’ broken the rod from dragging on the sand. $300.00, it should have a sturdier base on the rod holders! I like the cart other than that one issue.

I just bought 2 dagger rods and 2 5500 spinfisher VI reels I watched your video on the gear you had and recommended so I bought those and I was wondering if you recommend a different rod for your 9 foot setup I went with the battle II 4000 reel and wanted to know what you would recommend on the 9' rod other than a Write & McGill.

Not sure if you’ve already purchased a cart. I have both an orange tire cart and a regular black tire cart. When I weigh down my carts with ice in the cooler, I hate pulling the orange cart thru the sand. I choose the black tires over the orange tires. if just pulling light gear the orange is better. I’m not sure if my tire pressure is wrong, but that has been my experience.

Hey beach bum, love the vids! I don't know if you know or if it's been mentioned but I am pretty sure you can swap the handle on the Spinfiher VI 4500 with the entire Slammer III 4500 handle for more leverage and keep a smaller real as you mentioned in the vid. The part number I think is 15-SLA4500

Love your channel. I have a question. My son "age 8" and I are planning our summer pompano slam. Our plan is to get a hotel on Daytona Beach fish till dark then get up before the sunrise and slam. My question is, have you heard anything about east coast FL pompano being around? We went surf fishing two days ago and only caught five less then 8 inch whiting. But we did remove a lot of trash from the ocean. 😔.
