How reliable is the hotspot function? I’m a session drummer and my studio doesn’t have WiFi, but I need to be able to fire off sessions to clients without going all the way home…

So far it’s been as reliable as any other iPhone hotspot I’ve used. I haven’t tried uploading any large files using it, but I’d think you’d be okay for audio files.

This review and product showing was so in depth, I super appreciate it! I'm highly interested in buying this and I feel you gave more details much easier than the Light Phone's own website. (I love their aesthetic but it was hard to find a basic list of the specs and to know what exactly it can and can't do.) You seem to have thought of everything with the experience of using this phone! I thought of using an old GPS system as well. Then I remembered I have one already from about 2010 as well! I thought of the tiny size and how it probably wouldn't fit most phone holders in the car for navigation. I also thought of how tiny and black and white the display is and realize an old TomTom will be a bigger, colored and non distracting device for navigation. Seems like a great fit a phone for me. Perfect for when I need a break from getting too sucked into the world of the internet. I would use this as a secondary phone that comes with me out and about. A device that doesn't reel me in and has me all too excited to use it MORE. Thanks so much for all your thought and effort putting this video together!

This was the best review!! Thank you especially for your thoughtful recommendations (the weather forecast phone number, brilliant) and your honest takes on the pros & cons. I think my biggest hangup now is that texting photos & images among friends is a big part of my communication with them (most of my nearest & dearest live far away, and many of us are artists looking over each other's WIPs), but I'm tempted to find a go-around using Apple's in-house texting via email address. (My other hangup is that I don't know what all of their notification sound options are - your review's the first one I've found with a few examples, though! - and I'm picky about having soft, soothing sounds if I need to have the sound on.) Thanks again!

What a great video! So much helpful information and it was conveyed so effectively. I have been thinking that the Light Phone 2 is the right decision for me for a while now but I have been very hesitant due to the price and because of how deeply dependent I am on my smartphone to the point where I cant imagine life without it. Your video was some well needed encouragement.

Texting on it is terrible unless you use text to speech. If you need to be able to efficiently text, avoid phone. The screen delay and dead spots and tiny keys will make it a nogo for you. I personally don’t text much anyways, so started getting in the habit of text to speech if I absolutely have to text. It got me making a lot more phone calls and leaving voicemails. Definitely have everything forwarded to email, as this phone can’t do anything with texts. You can’t read texts while talking, and if someone sends you a link it is useless on your lightphone

@@therealsamreid for that price tag, I can easily get a Poco X3 pro with a powerful Snapdragon processor and big colour screen. I don't have any social media at the exception of RU-vid, which has helpful tutorials, so I don't think that the light phone could be my daily driver. I've been spoilt with big colour screen and that screen is way too little for my big fingers

Thank you for this deep dive! This was extremely helpful and informative. Do you think you need dust plugs for the micro USB port and headphone hole? (Or is it called a jack?) I saw another review somewhere saying they got dust under the screen and got the plugs. I've never had this problem with any phone but not sure if light phone needs it being e ink?

Glad it helped!! I’ve had the phone for about 2.5 months (mostly carry it in my pocket) and haven’t had any issues with dust in the charging port or the headphone jack (or under the screen!). I’ll update you if anything changes though!

How's the navigation? Can you do something like search 'Italian food' and see a bunch of options near you and information about them such as their phone number, etc? And what about links texted to you?

Hi Jordan! My friend Jose uses the example of searching for Starbucks and getting a list of all the locations near him in his video (linked below). Beyond that, I'm not sure - I actually use other means for navigation. I know there are a few text-based services that can definitely provide you with information like a place's phone number (also linked below). Links texted to you are kind of a nightmare - right now the only option is to re-type them out on your computer. I believe the Light Phone team has mentioned working on a "forward-to-email" feature for links like they have for pictures. Hi! It’s my daily driver, although I admittedly still use my old iPhone on my house’s WiFi for some things (like replying to this comment!). You are definitely able to switch the SIM card back and forth if you want to use it on a temporary/weekly basis.

I currently have a flip phone and have been looking for a replacement because I hate texting with the number pad. When I had a smartphone, I enjoyed the ease of texting, which does not seem to be equaled by the Light Phone 2. Do you think that the Qwerty setup, small and unresponsive though it may be, would be faster and more convenient than a number pad?

Hmm...that's a great question. It's been a while since I've used a number pad, but it probably depends on whether you had predictive text (T9) or not. My guess would be that the Light Phone would definitely be faster than manual typing with the number pad (typing "222" to get "c"), but fairly comparable to predictive text on a flip phone. If you don't mind a couple typos here and there, the Light Phone would probably be a tiny bit faster. Hope that helps!

@@johnambrose1995 I did end up going with the Light Phone, and I do much prefer it. I never really liked how the predictive text worked on my flip, so I never used it. The QWERTY keyboard on the LP2 is very small but works well enough (obviously not as quick as a smart phone) and as Sam said, the voice-to-text is really great for longer messages. The call quality on the Light Phone is much better than my flip phone, as well, for me and for whoever I'm calling, so I'm pretty glad I made the switch. Hope this helps!

This was just the type of review I was looking for! I’ve been stalking them since their early kickstarter days but I don’t like to be *that* early an adopter. Thinking of taking the plunge now that they’ve added navigation. Any word on a notes feature or swipe to text coming down the pipeline?

Not 100% sure how accurate this info is, but I saw a list of specs from some website that said it has a notepad and voice memo. But perhaps Sam has checked from the official source and has more accurate info. Swipe and voice to text would really help out this phone!

I still don't get the podcast aspect. So if I subscribe to a podcast, say the Dumb phone show do I just need to add that subscription and the episodes automatically load on to the phone or do I need to connect to the website to download each episode daily?

Great question - if you're subscribed (from the Dashboard), new episodes will automatically show up on your phone. If you want them to be "downloaded" (i.e. available offline), you'll need to select which ones you want to download - but that part can be done from the phone. Hope that helps!

Hi! Given that the phone doesn't come with a charging block, what kind of block is safe to use with the LP2? I've had bad experiences before of ruining my devices' batteries because I used a charging brick that was much too high voltage for the device (like my Nintendo Switch with a Google Pixel for example). Any insights on this? Thanks!

Excellent question. I haven’t run into any issues with this - I alternate between using the USB port in my car, an Apple charging block, and a power strip with USB ports. The Light team can probably give you a better answer if you reach out - support@thelightphone.com

@@jaredbeltran9676 I've been using the phone with a generic USB charging block for about 10 months now with no issues, so I assume you can use what you want. I wouldn't, however, recommend it with a fast charger. I don't think it's meant to handle that kind of power.

I just got it and inserted the micro SD. I linked my phone number - do i need to take out my Sim from my smartphone every time i need to use the light phone? I thought it would link my phone number and could shut off my smartphone and leave it for the day etc.

Hey! Great question. I'm not 100% sure about the micro SD, I but I think your options are either to switch the SIM each time you want to use it, or use two different SIM cards and "port" your number. In my experience, totally depends on use. The battery has lasted 2 days when the phone sat in my pocket (powered on) while on vacation. If you were to use navigation, my understanding is that you'd need to plug it in for it to last longer than a few hours. But in general everyday use (texts, calls, using the hotspot occasionally), I've only had it die once or twice before I went to bed at night.

I’d double check with your carrier - but that’s the way it worked with Verizon. I had to take a couple troubleshooting steps that I found on the Light website, but overall it was a pretty simple process. Good luck!

@@therealsamreid It worked pretty easy (Mint Mobile). Contacts were a bit of a pain though but I managed to do it. I'm officially on lightphone! I will be selling my smartphone and when I'm ready, I'll go back. This is good to have to detox. I already feel like my brain is less fogged and I'm living more in the moment!

You can choose from a library of ringtones but as far as I know there’s no way to upload an mp3 or anything like that.

Yep! You'll need to make sure you turn off iMessages first, but other than that it's pretty straightforward.

To the best of my knowledge, this is not a current feature - unless you were to download the individual tracks (like from a CD from the library) onto your Light Phone.

As far as I’m aware, the only accessibility feature is a “hearing aid control” setting. As of right now, the phone can’t do text-to-speech, enlarge font, or accept voice commands.

That's a great question - I don't think they have any plans to incorporate banking features, but using the phone's hotspot along with a laptop or tablet (or old phone) is probably your best bet.

One main workaround is to delete everything from iphone and lock yourself from installing new apps by letting your partner set a password

Thats slow even for an e ink display which means they put a shitty processor inside it that can barely run the functions. My kindle works faster. So it's not an e ink issue.

Fantastic! They need to make texting equal to a smartphone, the screen needs to be a little bigger and that crappy, shitty micro usb port from hell needs to be usb-c, even if they only give us 5 gigabits throughput. Litephone 3 please. I still use iPhone 7 and it is everything I need from a pocket computer and I'm very able to not use it, so I don't really need this phone. I could see myself with the next one if the above is added, which I'd use in conjunction with an iPad mini. I love all the great modern features and power of current smart devices but I really agree with the need for simpler devices designed to end distraction, digital addiction and digital dementia. Well done. More and slightly better please. Remarkable have a great minimal e-ink tablet that this would go with this perfectly as an anti-phone/anti-tablet combo.

Ive had it for half year. Disappointed totally. It is a joke. Battery gone in 8h. Directions not working. It switches off during the night charging. All sorts of bugs. Would not buy again. Will not. Never. It is like a half product. Not finished at all.

Sorry to hear that! I haven’t really used the Directions tool yet, but the phone has definitely helped me in my goal of decreasing my screen time. That was the reason I got it, so for me, it’s worth it if they’re still working out a few bugs. I understand that’s not true for everyone though! Thanks for your comment.
