Consistency is the Key for Long Term Positive Impact

It is not what we do on our best day that will truly make an impact on the quality of our lives, it is the habit we can stick to on our worst day that will make a lasting difference.
For the last 2 years, I have joined a strava monthly 100kms run challenge every month. I have achieved it every month except february 2022.
One important lesson I have taken from this 2 year journey: the day I really don’t feel like going out and running… but somehow I get out and run anyway… these runs make the biggest difference to my life.
Consistency… on the hard days
Once or twice a week I wake up and really do not feel like putting on my sports gear and running… I wake up tired and with low energy… and all I want to do is sit in a comfy seat with an extra coffee. These days a run really shifts my energy.
My friend Julio recently shared with me a story from his swim training. Some days the coach has them racing to have the quickest time overall. However, sometimes the coach has them swim 8 times 100 meters… and the winner is not the fastest overall… the winner is the one with the least variation between each of the 100 meter times. This training is to really encourage a focus on consistent swimming speed… not fast when you are fresh… and slowing as you tire.
This story reminded me of the importance of consistency.
On the Tim Ferriss podcast last week, I heard him speak with Neil Gaiman, the author. They spoke about habits. Neil said that the best writing is the same writing day over and over again; same place same time same process… no changes between one day and the next… an extreme focus on repeating the same day.
The other idea I loved was Neil Gaiman’s one writing rule for himself. When he is at his writing desk, he allows himself to do one of two things: write, or do nothing.
This rules allows his inner saboteur a choice… he doesn’t “have to” write.
Neil has learnt that the “do nothing” choice can be appealing in the short term… but it always becomes more and more boring… and writing begins to be more interesting than continued “doing nothing”.
How do you create consistency in the important habits of your life?

I've heard many times from Conor that record yourself in front of camera and try day after day every single day. The 100th day will make you powerful speaker. That's so inspiring to me personally! And also consistency is the key for sure! Do what ever but the secret to success is practice practice practice!!!

Dear Conor, you are comparing (questioning) the impact of a video against the background of an international crisis (possible world war 3). But as a subscriber of your channel and admirer of you and all the work you have done, I can honestly say: you have had a much bigger impact on my thinking than the war that's currently going on. Often the information you share with us is almost of esoteric value and thus only a percentage of the population is smart enough to truly grasp these topics and actively search for them. It's easy for people to turn their attention to bombs (danger), because of the way we are wired, that's basic surviving. I am very grateful for your words of wisdom and I aspire to follow this path too (especially what you said about recording yourself for 3 minutes a day). I appreciate all the good work you are doing, you are a great master of communications and a great example to be modeled.

Thanks again, Conor. You inspired me to be consistent in my making my now, quite large, collection of Talking Head videos. I've now made well over 1500 of them since I took your advice back in March 1917. Mind you, I've been a pretty consistent writer, writing most days for the past fifty years or so. The advice I took then was, "If you want to be a writer you have to write every day." Thanks again.

Just as I was going to ask where you've been I stumble on this video! I didn't have any joy watching it because it reminded me how I periodically waste time on activities that give momentary pleasure BUT I know it'll definitely improve my life in the long term if I'll do what you advised in reviewing my activities. For that I'll say a big thank you and please don't stay away for too long before the next video!

@@ConorNeill I have been following your videos and signed up for your 10 week communication lessons/ activities. They are amazing and I am improving, however the lack of desired results has been due to my inconsistency!! This is what I need to address first. This video is a good reminder and guide 👍👍

Wonderful sentiment Conor. Keep the spirits up and keep recording these excellent videos. Gaiman's remark is something a lot of authors highlight... even writing the emails/training content/playbooks becomes less of a chore when any type of writing gets good and fluid. Funnily enough, I hear the phrase 'Stay Consistent' everyday - its the final phrase in a home workout series I use (bodyweight training app), urging me on to come back tomorrow, building that habit. And thank for you speaking tip about 'recording yourself on your phone' - after 20yrs delivering business presentations & faculty on staff training I've spent the last 10 days recording, revisiting and re-recording a 30 minute session on Leadership. It was an ear, and eye, opener. Had no idea the quality of my delivery could have been so lacking - just not up to what one would aspire to. Thankfully, culled the umms & ahhhs, tightened the content, unified the narrative flow. The presentation was a punchier 20 mins and well received. Chuffed.

Nice video Conor. I think most of us struggle with this and particularly at the moment with the crazy events happening in Ukraine. A quote from one of the stoic philosophers Zeno captures what you are saying here "Well being is realised by small steps, but is truly no small thing"
