Here's how to achieve the proper hand positions for the shaft lean you need at impact.
Hey, Performance Golfers, Matt Walter here at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. Today, I'm going to show you how to exit left, and it's not going to be rope-hooked with the cane off the stage. I'm talking about how you're going to get your golf club around your body to develop a great impact position.
The face-on view when we're hitting is sometimes deceiving in the sense of how we create shaft lean. Typically, where I see players shank it and they really get way off base is that they think that the shaft lean comes from a linear push with their hands to develop that look. So, they look at it on video, and they go, "Oh, my hands should be forward. I've turned my body," but the problem is, their hands are too far away from their body, and if they train in pushing their hands up towards the target line, you're more than likely going to shank it because what you're learning how to do is create a linear move to create shaft lean and that presents the hosel.
I want you to set up to the alignment stick. You're going to go just inside the alignment stick, and if I get the club back down to shaft-parallel, so let's say I made a full swing and I've come back down to here and I'll let my hands continue towards the target, you can see how the club face actually works out to the right. It's also open, so I could twist my hands, but it doesn't stop the fact that my club is working its way out to the golf ball, presenting itself into the hosel.
Scoot down a little bit. If I get to that same spot and I feel like my left hand moves closer to my left pocket, the club doesn't work out, and it squares itself up a lot easier than, if I try and push my hands forward, the club face is open and it's working its way out to the right. So, what we have to remember is the exit left.
Now, the first question out of this gate is, "Hey, pro, doesn't that mean I'm going to be coming over the top?" Wrong. If you remember, the golf club's traveling on a plane, or, you know, many planes, but for the most part, it's traveling around that circle. It goes back, out to the ball, and then it should go back again. The problem is, too many people try and go back, and then they go out to the ball, and then they try and keep going up towards the target.
If you watch any of the modern-era golfers, you will see that they don't exit up the line with their hands. What you'll see is, their hands go in.
Now, here's where it gets slightly difficult for the average Joe. So, we may not have enough hip rotation to carry all of that shaft lean around our body. So, if we had to imagine my hips are here, I have to create space with my hips in order to have room for my hands to exit. If my hips can't turn and they stop right here, well, there's not much room for an exit plan, so I have to release the club face a little bit.
The key important variable here is, is that when you start coming down, you're trying to hide those hands from the camera while the club head is staying out, and you hit these nice, soft, little pitch shots. So, then, once you're comfortable with it, you can then start to get into a more full-like golf swing and really feel, from here, about shaft-parallel on the downswing, your hands start to go around your body and produce a lot more consistent, stable, shaft-leaning impact. So, I hope this drill and this explanation of how to create shaft lean enlightens you on how you can now produce a tour-like impact when it matters the most at the ball. If you liked this video, please subscribe. Send me your comments, your questions, your concerns. Be glad to answer them. I'll be the one hopping on there, answering any questions you may have, so that's your chance to interact with me. Until then, I'll catch you later, golfers.

I don’t usually comment, but this video was my “Aha!” Moment. For those of us that have a significant in to out path, with the inevitable push or pull hook depending on what the face is doing at impact, this drill will be a game changer. If those hands are not way on their way towards the left pocket (for a right hand golfer) at the time of impact, there is no way the swing path will not be too in to out (yes, too much in to out club path does exist, just ask one of us that hook the ball). Hand path is NOT the same as club path, and that’s what this drill is intended to demonstrate. Works with any club, including (and I would argue especially) with the driver

This is a long post, but I guarantee it is worth it for those that have never experienced this lesson. Matt, by coincidence after 20+ years of playing this sport, I had this discovery at the range just a few weeks ago. You are the only one that has actually explained, partially, what my problem has been all my playing career, and I don't believe I'm alone, and I'll tell you quite honestly it is not something easy to conquer at all...even when you 'discover' your lesson...even when we hit a few great shots; because in my case I've had decades of bad movements ingrained in me. I have, all my life, been trying to get the club to 'square' at the target with my hands, and even my body in some weird way to help out. It has never really worked, but I've played some pretty good golf with what I've had...about 8 handicap average. But what that does is take away any chance of ever opening the hips properly...if I try to open the hips or get real shaft lean, it is 'manufactured', weak, and not an improvement...perhaps even an even worse mishit. Now, the 'discovery' or aha moment, whatever you call it, I call it a Singularity for me, is my hip turn, as you state, is key. But it is more complicated than that because there is INTENT behind everything in the swing...and my intent had NEVER EVER been to square the clubhead with my hip turn and at the same time...couple it with a HARD swing from the inside. When I started doing this it was AMAZING really, I can feel the Whip-like effect--sort of like snapping a whip...it has been as big for me as the first time I compressed a ball and went up much farther and better than me trying to scoop it. In addition to this is the realization that the target on my irons is well past the ball, and down and through. This is too long of a post...but I love your lesson, as you have clarified my thoughts even further. Sorry for the long post.

As an IQ specialist I can say this guy is a bad ass high IQ golf coach. Everything he said was perfect. I’m saving this video and I made notes on my golf notes to never forget it. Must do stick drill. Here is my sequence ….bring club back with body and right hand, make rock skipping motion back to ball without right shoulder going closer to target line and try to hit a bit inside. Now tomorrow I’ll try to exit left with my hips.

Looks like 4 years on and this is still terrific advice. I have a freind knocking hosel rockets regularly. 2 young pros haven't been able to fix it. I see him with shaft lean, hands tracing the target line. I'll video his swing but I'd be willing to bet a steak dinner that tnis video can help. Oh and, I'm going to make sure I practice this drill as well (we all het lazy over time). Thanks!

One of the best videos for golf I’ve seen. This really explains a ton and I was one getting a lot of shanks from time to time and couldn’t figure out why. The shaft lean...the incorrect way was exact what I was doing and other instructors explained it wrong. I just came back from the range using this video and I had immediate results. I was hitting sooooo much better. I can swing around 110 with my driver and around 85-93 with my irons depending on which one so the power was there. I was missing pure contact and this solved it. One question...will this create a chicken wing by bringing the hands closer to the body during the down swing or at the impact position?

Excellent video and explanation. The understanding of Golf Mechanics have changed dramatically thanks to technology. Many teachers are good golfers but they don´t know how to explain the mechanics of the impact and golf swing. Be aware. In this case, Lean is very good. I am working on this drill since August 2018 and it really helped me to improve consistency. If you are an average golfer, this drill will help you to hit the ball lower and more solid. Thanks to this drill, I shot a solid 69 yesterday (67 - handicap 2) from the black tees. I would highly recommend though, to work with a good golf teacher.

If only I had understood this 20 odd years ago. This is the move I have been recently making and what a difference it makes. I have never heard a connection like this or it any shot in the way I do now. I just think I was afraid to ty this move, even though I had seen this demonstrated by others. Did any instructor, on any lesson ever show me this, or talked about how the hands work - NO thy did not. Everyone should be doing this. For the first time in my golfing life, I now feel progress in a way I could never have imagined.

Tried this on the course today. Was slightly sceptical as thinking I was always going to hook it left, my course is very tight and a slight hook and its goodnight... Well, it didn't work every time but when it did it was the best ball striking sound I've ever heard. This is something I'm going to work on as I need the confidence to hit this shot every time. My course does not have any practice facilities so have to practice this on the course. This is the best single piece of advice I've heard. Thankyou!

Matt, if there is a secret to good golf, this is it. Brilliant lesson. No one else I've ever seen has explained this in my experience. I have to add that on another channel a comparison was made with a good amateur player vs a professional and that when the club is parallel on the downswing, the amateur's hands are well behind the right leg--yet the Pro is already near his right knee. The lag isn't exactly less for the amateur, what it is though is what you explain (it took both of these lessons f, your and the other for me at least to understand) that the amateur is trying to glide, push, pull or whatever--the hands toward a target in a linear fashion; rather than RELEASE the club and CHANGE DIRECTIONS with the hands going left as the Pro does. As a side benefit, my chipping and pitching have improved because I'm no longer trying to move my hands across my body in any way; they go left. This move almost feels like the hands stop to me because my swing had been grooved for so long on following a line rather than a true release. 2c, for what it's worth from a 9 handicapper.

Hey Matt, I notice that at impact, your shoulders are basically level at impact which looked good and you hit the ball sweet. However what confuses me is that a lot of other instructors on here tell you to have the spine and shoulder tilted at impact, for example like Tommy Fleetwood? Related to this possibly, should the sternum be ahead of the ball at impact with your irons? Cheers from the UK
