Hey guys just a heads up, I'm using a new microphone for this video which is why it may sound different than normal. Still working out some kinks and figuring stuff out (in case you know, it wasn't obvious enough that I'm bad at this lol) If there's anything I can do to improve the quality than please let me know, as usual I always appreciate your feedback.
Avoid ending sentences with upward inflection when you're not asking a question :) Otherwise it's like you're talking like this? Even though the words you're saying don't call for it? e.g. @0:44 "...because they could just help themslves?" and again @1:17 "...playable?"
Spawn was in Soul Calibur 2 because at that time, Namco developed Spawn Armageddon. It wasn't an Xbox exclusive, it was on all 3 platforms, but it was likely cheaper for them to reuse Spawn than it was for them to make a deal with Xbox to use Blinx the Time Sweeper. Master Chief wouldn't have made it in because that game came out about half a year prior to the release of Soul Calibur, and I don't think everyone knew Halo was going to be as big as it ended up being.
Oooh, Console exclusive was a good curveball from the community post teaser. I was fully betting it was gonna be on third party guest characters! edit: I'd imagine the soul calibur star wars dlc gettin delisted was long before disney bought the series honestly. (If that's the bit, my bad lmao)
Pitchin' as the Soulcalibur nerd: the Soul series has a history of console-exclusives since the first game Originally, Hwang and Mitsurugi in Soul Blade were interchangeable characters sharing the same moveset but were only available depending on on the region, but both were made available on the Playstation version alongside a new addition with Han Myeong...who was still just another Mitsurugi clone Soulcalibur originally didn't feature Cervantes in the arcade version and was added as a console exclusive character alongside making Inferno playable.. Soulcalibur III is an interesting oddity because its arcade version was released _after_ the console version. It added Inferno as an exclusive boss character and gave Hwang his own separate slot rather than being relegated to a bonus character
Soul Calibur 5 was to feature two guest characters: Ezio from Assassin's Creed 2, and Devil Jin from Tekken. Unfortunately due to rushed development, only Ezio was completed and Devil Jin wasn't; he has no model, his moveset and announcer call are all that's left of him and his voice clips are all placeholder beeps. However, you can make custom characters that use Devil Jin's moveset, but not those with Ezio's moveset possibly because of Ubisoft. Ironically, only Ezio's stage and Devil Jin's moveset did carry over to Soul Calibur Lost Swords, but Ezio's stage was not intended to appear. Yet, it showed up in one stage of a limited time event where you can get pieces of exclusive armor. In that stage, it's trying to play Ezio's theme, but all you get is silence.
@@X2011racer IV's guests also weren't available as custom movesets (and you can't give them new costumes like you can for the normal cast), so presumably that was a limitation in the licensing agreement. I might be missing a spinoff, but I want to say VI is the first game that lets you use guest characters in the character builder. Also worth noting that III doesn't have a proper guest character, but the character builder has cosmetics that let you make KOS-MOS from Xenosaga.
@@X2011racer Oh my god I never even considered Devil Jin was supposed to be a really character, jeez. Do you have any footage of Ezio's stage? I didn't think he HAD one?
By the way if you a soulcalibur fan Did you knew that’s sophitia is console exclusive in soul calibur 2? People really dislike cassandra in the arcade version so namco added sophitia in the console ports.
the gba port of alpa 3 is actually really cool, and while novelty is really the only reason to play it these days, the devs (crawfish interactive) did a great job just getting it to play as well as they did, extra characters or not. plus there were no game breaking glitches, unlike capcom's own gba port of sf2. though speaking of its release date, it's possible those characters were added in to make up for having missed the previous christmas season, which was the intended release window. this missed deadline meant crawfish broke contract with capcom, and that apparently led to them shutting down. they actually made some incredibly ambitious gba games, and made them well, so i wish they hadn't gone under for such a bullshit reason.
Not to mention their incredibly ambitious port of Alpha 1 to GBC. I really wish they managed to fit multiplayer into that, I'd love to see tournaments of it
Tekken 7 has one. The arcade version got revisions alongside the console versions, which included the console DLCs. However, the only character that wasn't put on to the arcade versions is Negan.
IDK that arcade got everyone else from DLC. I thought it only was updated once and wouldn't have the additional first-time characters or their exclusive stages too.
@@alejandroramirez4470 To be fair, it was the only time they added console DLC characters onto the arcade version. They didn't do that with Tag 2, IIRC.
Brief note about the Alpha 2 Gold EX characters: As far as I recall, two of them (CE Dhalsim and Gief) actually debuted in the North American arcade release of Alpha 2, while the rest debuted in Zero 2 Alpha in arcades before also being implemented into Alpha 2 Gold. Great video, always found this subject fascinating!
Now, this is speculation, but wasn't Necrid included in SC2 due to Mcfarlane Toy's deal to produce the official Soul Calibur 2 figures? Todd Mcfarlane created Necrid (and Spawn), and I had always assumed that Namco put Necrid in to throw Mcfarlane a bone as an afterthought, which is why his moves and playstyle are a broken mishmash of several other characters
Quite a few omissions when it comes to MK: - MK4 on home consoles and PC had Goro as an exclusive character; he wasn't in Arcade version; - MK Gold, Dreamcast exclusive port of MK4, had 6 additional characters, compared to home version of MK4; - MK: Tournament Edition (second port of Deadly Alliance on GB Advance), had exclusive characters Sektor, Noob Saibot and Sareena, who were not in any other version of the game; - MK Unchained - outside of Goro and Shao Kahn, its also had 4 characters ported from Deadly Alliance;
Alpha 3 Max with *good* rollback and *good* netplay would be amazing Alpha series is my favourite out of all the SF games, being able to experience it in full glory is a dream
A correction on SFA3 - Guile and Evil Ryu were in the PS1 version as well, as unlockable characters earned through the game's World Tour mode. I think you got them by leveling up a fighter to level 30 (for Ryu) and 31 (for Guile). They are unlocked from the start on Dreamcast and Saturn though!
Cool showcase of SC2 Plus! If I remember correctly Necrid was put in the game because Todd Mcfarlane had Mcfarlane Toys which Soulcalibur 2 had collaborated with but in the contract he wanted a character (Necrid) in the game
The reason Hakushin was cut from TvCUAS requires explanation. In the early 90's, Saban Entertainment did an English dub of his anime, and even though it never aired in the US, they still owned the US rights to it (Bulk is even seen watching it in an episode of Power Rangers). Then Disney bought pretty much all of Saban's catelog during their acquisition of Fox Family, and despite the fact that they only did anything with Power Rangers and Digimon, they still wouldn't allow Hakushin and the Samurai Pizza Cats from appearing in TvC.
That is indeed true. In fact, it's an issue like this that is going to be the main reason why TvC will never get a sequel or re-release, as the Tatsunoko characters are licensed to other companies outside of Japan, and Capcom had to make time finding each and every company to get their okay to use the characters that can appear.
@@jeremyriley1238 Although I'm pretty sure nowadays Tatsunoko regained the international rights to all their properties aside from Speed Racer and Macross (seriously, why did they think renewing their contract with Harmony Gold was a good idea?!)
@@otaking3582 Because Big West owns the rights to all Macross stuff outside of the original SDF in Japan and only begrudgingly allows Tatsunoko to keep their stake in that after several legal battles, so Tatsunoko lets Harmony West have hold of it in the west to fuck with them.
@@TheShinyFeraligatr Harmony Gold doesn't DO anything with the IP! Tatsunoko actively loses money from the deal! At least Hasbro/Saban and whoever currently owns Voltron allow Toei to sell Sentai and GoLion stuff outside of Japan, and THEY actually do stuff with their respective IP's (less so Hasbro currently, but my point still stands).
Something I wanna add about Gon. The art is his manga HAS NO RIGHT LOOKING THIS GOOD. It legitimately puts all other mangakas, save for Kentaro Miura (RIP, legend), to shame. Trust me, look it up.
SCII had considered using Ninja Gaiden's Ryu Hayabusa and FFVII's Cloud Strife for the Xbox and PS2 ports respectively, but Itagaki didn't wanna play ball, and Square Enix wanted too much money.
About the Yoda and Vader thing: My guess is that their logic was Yoda and Xbox = Green, Vader and Playstation = Black. Or it could have been a nod to the light and dark side of the Force. The latter sounds way dumber, but they're both equally as plausible in my mind.
Street Figter X Tekken had console exclusive characters, too. The PS3 and PSVita versions got guest characters in the forms of Cole from inFAMOUS, Box Art Mega Man, Pac-Man piloting a Mokujin mech, and two cat mascots named Toro and Kuro. This level of PlayStation exclusivity makes MK9 Kratos look paltry. It doesn't even have the Tatsunoko excuse of only being on those consoles, because it was on Xbox 360 and PC! Edit: I did find a developer quote explaining things. "We do have the exclusive characters for the Sony platform. We have Cole, the two Sony cats, Kuro and Toro. But basically for the Xbox 360, we were in discussions with them (Microsoft) for which character to put in as an exclusive, but we weren't able to decide on a character because of differences in timing and things like that."
A sequel to this video would be something like region-exclusive characters like Norimaro (MSHvSF), Hakushon Daimaō (Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross-Generation of Heroes), or Arthur (Soulcalibur).
Anna Williams, with her own playstyle, was also exclusive to the console version of Tekken 3. In the Arcade version, she was merely a pallete swap of Nina Williams. This is because Anna was a very late addition to the game, hence Ogre having some of her moves, even though she's in the game.
Classic Chun Li and the CE versions of Gief and Dhalsim where in the arcade version of SFA2, Shum Aluma was also in the arcade version but only as a secret boss fight. And Evil Ryu and Guile where in the PS1 version as well but that doesnt change that this is a good video
You're right about Tekken 3 not getting a modern rerelease on consoles. It certainly wasn't included on a terrible mini console that used the PAL ROM instead of NTSC, because that would've been stupid.
It's the other way around. Tekken 3 made it to the PlayStation Classic. (...complete with Gon, I guess?) If you bought the PlayStation Classic in Japan or any other Asian country, it's the NTSC version. Outside Japan or Asia, it's the PAL version. This is another example why the west was worse.
Awesome video that does get as much talked about. I hope you might do another video of console exclusive characters another time. Here are couple other console exclusive characters from other games. In the arcade fighter based on Yu Yu Hakusho, The Batte of Yu Yu Hakusho Shitou! Ankoku Bujutsukai, there was an exclusive character only in the arcade version. The PS2 port (with the added moniker of 120% Full Power), they added the following: Gouki, Rando, Suzaku, Itsuki, Sensei, and Touya (along with Puu versions of the main cast). PS2 port of Super Dragon Ball Z added: Mecha-Freiza, Ultimate Gohan, Vidal, Majin Buu, Majin Vegeta, and King Piccolo. The PS2 port of The King of Fighters XI add the following characters from Neo Geo Battle Colisseum: Nests Kyo Kusanagi (listed as EX Kyo), Mai Shiranui, Geese Howard, Mr. Big, Robert Garcia, Tung Fu Rue, and Hotaru Futaba.
Cool video! I thought Alpha 2 Gold Cammy had a Text only ending for Arcade mode. Was that later ports? SC2 Plus is really badass! You only mentioned it a bit, but Kratos was on the PSP Soul Calibur. If you do a follow up, MK Unchained added Jax, Kitana, Frost AND Blaze on top of the Gamecube additions, fans have also modded Deception to have new fighters too. I think Super Dragon Ball Z added some Console(PS2) exclusives, like Adult Gohan, Majin Vegeta and King Piccolo. Some of Videl's moves in DBFZ were taken from that game as well. I'm sure there's others, but those are the main console exclusives that I know of in games not mentioned yet.
Real, I started the video off wondering why the first song was so familiar, I then realized I remembered it from the I wanna kill the guy Dark Boshy boss fight, Nostalgia kicked real hard
17:19 Glad to see SOULCALIBUR II Plus footage on this video. I thank the modders for porting over Heihachi, Spawn and Siegfried to the GameCube version, but they had to cut corners and instead give us Mitsurugi-based models for Heihachi due to technical issues. I believe Spawn was included in the Xbox version not only because of Todd McFarlane's involvement in creating an original character for SOULCALIBUR II CS, but Namco also had the Spawn license, a franchise Todd McFarlane created. Spawn Armageddon is the Namco-produced Spawn game for PS2, GameCube and Xbox, and what better why to promote it with Spawn's inclusion in the Xbox port of SOULCALIBUR II?
14:50 The Reason Why Hakushon Daimao wasn't included in TVC UAS was because of Saban Entertainment was Bought by Disney in 2002 and the Team couldn't include in in the International version of the game, It could also happen with The Samurai Pizza Cats due to the Same issue
Everyone should read... err, I-II MEAN go look at the beautiful artwork of the story of GON told through panels with animals looking cartoony and realistic at the same time. The manga can be universally read *wink* *wink* . also IT'S THAT GOOD I MEAN THAT AMAZING.
In tekken 3, in arcade you can only have Anna Williams by pressing start on Nina with Nina's moveset. So technically Anna with Anna's moveset is console exclusive.
Man it's still really impressive for the global version of TvC with how much a nightmare all those copyrights spread throughout the world it only lost one character
I was so pissed when I found out I couldn’t play as maki in sf3 alpha in the street fighter collection because she was only in the console versions like really capcom you couldn’t just include the console version of sf3 alpha like it’s your game you don’t gotta pay extra to get that version on the collection
A note about soul cal 2 plus. The models used for heihachi and spawn are actually reskinned mitsurugi and volvo models if i remember correctly. It's not exactly a 1 to 1 port yet as there still isn't a way to import new models into the game.
The Western version of Tekken 3 was originally going to have Pingu in the roster instead of Gon, on account of him being far more well known. But, if you do a follow up to this, you got to talk about Sega's fighting game characters too!
Do you know of a character named Pepsi Man? Well, Japanese versions of Fighting Vipers (arcade and PS2 included) contains product placement for Pepsi. This is apparent on Picky's skateboard deck and the UFO Diner stage with its Pepsi-themed trucks and Pepsi billboard. The Japanese Sega Saturn version pushed the Pepsi sponsorship further by including Pepsi Man as a playable fighter. Sega lost the Pepsi license after, and Pepsi Man was repurposed into Kuhn in Fighting Vipers 2, complete with Pepsi Man's moveset.
Super DBZ had a few console exclusive characters so since it’s already niche it’s hard to find footage of them being played.... especially since King Piccolo is one of them and he never got in FighterZ
Kratos in MK9 was actually a solid counter pick against Kabal who was the most popular tournament character. If he was allowed in tournaments we might have actually seen some Kratos in its tournies lol
16:45 I don't know if Bandai still has the Gon license... As far as I know, Bandai published a Gon video game for the SNES long before they formed a joint venture with Namco. Not to mention Tekken 3 CS has Anna Williams with a unique moveset, something the arcade version doesn't have. That moveset would come back for Tekken Tag Tournament (at least for the arcade version). Sure you can play as Anna on Tekken 3 AC, but she's just a model swap for Nina, with the only difference being that Anna has an exclusive set of win poses that Nina can't perform.
Tekken 3 actually has another console exclusive character; Anna Williams, ninas sister and playable in both thekken games before 3. Since she isn't in the arcade version mokujin can't copy her style
Turns out all of the "console exclusive" Alpha 2 characters you mentioned (save for Cammy and playable Shin Akuma) are already in Street Fighter Zero 2 Alpha, an updated re-release of Street Fighter Alpha 2 released to arcades in every region but North America and Europe. That became the basis for Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold (Zero 2 Dash in Japan). Classic Chun-Li is in all versions of Alpha 2 (SNES included), while Evil Ryu is absent from the arcade versions released outside North America and Europe, PlayStation, SNES, and Windows PC. Prior to Zero 2 Alpha's release, the only way Japanese, southeast Asian, Hispanic and Brazilian consumers can play as Evil Ryu in Alpha 2 was through the Sega Saturn version, which is based on the North American and European arcade version.
So for Cammy, X-Men vs Street Fighter (late 1996) was before Alpha 2 Gold (late 1997). Alpha 2 Gold was not a standalone release (at least in the US) and was part of the Street Fighter Collection that included Super Street Fighter 2 and SSF2 Turbo on a separate disc.
Soul Calibur 2 on Gamecube was my introduction to the series. Back then i had a gamecube, which is not really known for having a wide variety of fighting games
I hope one day Ingrid can make a return to Street Fighter, while i doubt that and she's probably something Capcom wants rather left Forgotten, she was really cool Also Eagle, he is cool
One of my favorite cases of console exclusivity is Street Fighter X Tekken, cause for some reason the PS3 got three whole characters exclusivly while the XBox got zero. One of the PS3 characters being Cole Macgrath from the inFAMOUS games, who hilariously was made super buff to fit the artstyle.
My rule with exclusives is everyone should get one Atleast. It’s a slap to have one console have an extra person for free but u get nothing. What’s worse is some exclusives start as that but become purchasable down the line. Huge examples are soul calibur 4 and street fighter x tekken which had 5 exclusive characters. With 2 being purchasable down the line for Xbox. I’m okay with re launches of games having new people added or exclusives now added because they came to terms tho. It gives people a reason to buy the re release in first place.
17:08 HEY! I am not a Boomer, Gen X here! I'm thinking you are thinking SC2 is older than it is... Other than that, fun vid! I was working and also playing SC2 tournaments in the local Namco arcade at the time.
16:46 Tekken 3 is on the playstation classic console for some reason, idk if Gon was Japan exclusive though, but if he was in the US release too then yeah Tekken 3 has been re released with Gon ONCE
In mortal kombat’s section, you skipped an entire console exclusive game called Mortal Kombat Gold, which is a console port of MK4. It contains like 10+ console exclusive characters.
Apparently in Tekken 4, Miharu had a smaller hurtbox due to a bug in its coding, meaning she can be exploited this by having more evasion. So in high level play, you'd rather play Miharu over Xiaoyu.
I love your videos, MrMixtape! I'm really surprised to see you have less than 10k subscribers, I like your content every bit as much as jmcrofts and Justin Wong. Here's a question for you, out of curiosity. How much do you care about the Smash series? Are you curious about it? It's my impression that Smash is its own little subcircle among the FGC, many not even considering it a traditional fighting game, most seeming to consider platform fighters their own thing.
Thank you! I used to be big into Smash, in fact it was pretty much my gateway into the FGC. I don't play it much but I'll still talk about/watch it whenever possible.
If you ever cover Ehrgeiz, I'd love for you to cover the PS1 version and it's four exclusive characters. Sephiroth might just have the longest list of attacks in any fighting game. XD
You forgot MK4/MK Gold when Kitana, Mileena, Kung Lao, Cyrax, Baraka, and Sektor were console exclusives for MK Gold. Also, Seung Mina and Assassin are the best console exclusive characters in Soul Calibur 2.
Completely unrelated to everything The song you used at the start was the song I used for my first ever geometry dash level, and it made me both cringe super hard as well as make me super nostalgic
Someone probably beat me to it, but there's a few reasons why you rarely see the updated ports of Alpha 3. The first is that they don't run on the CPS2 hardware that the original does. Instead it runs on Sega's Naomi hardware. The second is that, even past all the logistics created by that, the balance changes introduced in Upper are pretty contentious with the playerbase ala VSav 2.
Also if you choose to revisit this topic there are TONS of SNK games like this. The PS2 port of KoF XI has a bunch of characters ported from Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, not unlike what USF4 did with the Street Fighter x Tekken characters. However unlike USF4, these characters were not given the proper TLC so they're really buggy and don't function right.
Kratos actually got to appear on other consoles for the first time fairly recently through Fortnite, around the same time as Master Chief which Sony was completely fine with. Combined with God of War 2018 being on PC, I’m hoping this means MK9’s inevitable re-release will have Kratos in it on all versions.
I doubt they'll re-release MK9. It actually got de-listed from Steam (idk about consoles), because their rights to Freddy (guest character in MK9) expired.
Tekken 7 is also another one that’s actually have a console only character. Akuma, Geese & Noctis are available in the console version and the fated retribution & fated retribution round 2 versions of tekken 7 in the arcades but Negan is console exclusive. Edit: you forgot mortal kombat 4 that’s actually have console exclusives (goro, meat & noob saibot in the ps1/n64/pc. And 6 extra characters in the Dreamcast port). Also sophitia is console exclusive in soul calibur 2. People really dislike cassandra in the arcade version so namco added her in the console ports.
15:16 If you look carefully or play Miharu too often but pick Xiaoyu by accident, you'll notice Miharu has slightly more attack power than Xiaoyu. Back when Tekken 4 was the main Tekken game to play, Xiaoyu mains played as Miharu instead for the increase in offense alone.
More console exclusive fighting game characters: - Kliff and Justice, two characters from the first Guilty Gear game, did not return for X. As a result, they came back on the PS2-exclusive Guilty Gear X Plus with new sprites. Same deal with Guilty Gear XX Accent Core and its console-only Plus counterpart. - Sheryl and Hazama are two characters who debuted in the PlayStation 2 port of The Rumble Fish, and cannot be selected in the Arcade Mode. These two are playable in other modes, and attempting to select Sheryl and Hazama declares that these fighters did not officially participate the 5th F.F.S. (Fight For Survival) Tournament held by Probe-Nexus. Unfortunately, Sheryl and Hazama were cut from The Rumble Fish Plus, which came out on modern platforms as early as the PS4 and Xbox One. These two wouldn't be playable in an arcade Rumble Fish game until The Rumble Fish 2. - Samurai Shodown games have playable boss characters. The Mega Drive and Mega CD versions have a playable Shiro Amakusa to make up for the absence of Earthquake. He might have been playable in the PlayStation version's fencing pack, but as a VS-only hidden character. Speaking of the Samurai Shodown Fencing Pack, Mizuki's playable as a VS-only hidden character in Samurai Shodown II. Kuroko (enabler) and Zankuro became playable in the PlayStation port of Samurai Shodown III: Blades of Blood, and the latter returned playable in the PlayStation port of Samurai Shodown IV: Amakusa's Revenge, alongside Cham-Cham. - The King of Fighters is known for its console-exclusive characters: '94 ReBout has Saisyu Kusanagi*, '95 on the Game Boy has Nakoruru, '99 Evolution has a playable Krizalid (but only in his second form), 2002 had King (DPX), Shingo (DPX), Geese (PX), Goenitz (PX) and Orochi Iori (Xbox only). 2003 has playable versions of Kusanagi, Chizuru and Maki. XI has Robert, Mai, EX Kyo, Tung and Geese. XII had Elizabeth and Mature. XIII had Billy and an innocent, white-clad Saiki, who had timed console exclusivity before being thrown into the Arcade-only Climax release. - Iori Yagami does appear in the Game Boy version of Real Bout Fatal Fury Special as that version's exclusive character. * Saisyu Kusanagi did debut in The King of Fighters '94, but he was an NPC that only showed up in Japan Team's cutscenes when Mature was about to introduce Rugal to the finalists. Unlike Mature, Saisyu already had sprites drawn in the KOF '94 & '95 art direction, so I can see why SNK went with Saisyu as the console-only character to KOF '94, which got a home release after 10 years. Saisyu isn't in SNK Arcade Classics Vol.1 or The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga versions of KOF '94.
Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden/Dead or Alive could’ve been a great guest character for the Xbox version of SC2, but the then-owner of the DOA franchise hated Tekken and by extension, probably Soul Calibur as well so it wouldn’t have happened. I wish SC2 HD also came out on the Wii U then Link could’ve been made available, and then all 3 guest characters would’ve been playable officially.
The EX versions aren't console exclusive as Dhalsim and Zangief are in Street Fighter Alpha 2 (US and European versions) and the rest are in Street Fighter Zero 2 Alpha. Guile and Evil Ryu are in the PlayStation version, they're just not automatically unlocked (unlike the Dreamcast and Saturn ports). Super Street Fighter II Turbo for the Dreamcast and GBA have Shin Gouki/Shin Akuma as a secret character. For Mortal Kombat, I'd also include MK4 as the home versions added Noob Saibot and Goro and the Dreamcast received an updated version in Gold. Deception received an updated version for the PSP in the form of Unchained.
I also think another reason why they separated Vader and Yoda as they did was because their colour schemes represented their respective consoles. Vader and black, Yoda and green.
I remember hearing the reason Yoda was on 360 and Vader was on PlayStation was because Xbox 360 was white so light side and PlayStation 3s were black so dark side
